Modelling, Sensing, And Control Of Weld Beads In Gravity Aligned And Non-Gravity Aligned Orientations For Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Joshua J. Penney

Doctoral Dissertations

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) has recently developed into a viable manufacturing process for large, complex metal parts. The WAAM process uses a Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) torch mounted to an automated motion platform to execute a predetermined path plan based on a desired CAD geometry. As the desired geometry becomes more complex, it is advantageous to utilize out-of-position welding techniques used by human welders to stabilize the weld pool during the deposition of large overhangs. To ensure part accuracy and quality, adding layers of real-time control to manage various aspects of the WAAM process is critical. First, a …

Digital Cutting Force Modeling For Milling Operations, Timothy T. No Aug 2021

Digital Cutting Force Modeling For Milling Operations, Timothy T. No

Doctoral Dissertations

Process improvement in milling through improved understanding of machining dynamics is an on-going research endeavor. The objective of this project is to advance digital modeling of the milling process by incorporating tool-specific geometry in the machining analysis. Structured light scanning will be used to perform tool geometry measurements and produce a 3D model. The 3D model data will include the spatial location of the cutting edges, as well as the rake and relief profiles from the tool cross section. The rake and relief profiles will be imported, together with the work material flow stress model, into a finite element analysis …

Sae Formula Team Carbon Fiber Seat, Jacob Jaksic Jan 2021

Sae Formula Team Carbon Fiber Seat, Jacob Jaksic

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

roject is for the Formula SAE Zips Racing team here at the University of Akron. The team includes Jacob Jaksic, Sean Turner, Dovydas Sodys, Mike White, and Sevin Johnson. We are tasked with reducing the weight of their current seat, while remaining comfortable to the driver. Our plan was to do this with a lightweight material, specifically carbon fiber. Many different steps were required when outlining this project: finalizing a design with verification from our Zips racing advisor, completing FEA analysis on finished design, acquiring material to be molded into seat, and finding a company to fabricate out of carbon …

Modeling And Simulation Of The Thermoforming Process In Thermoplastic-Matrix Composite Materials, Philip M. Bean Dec 2018

Modeling And Simulation Of The Thermoforming Process In Thermoplastic-Matrix Composite Materials, Philip M. Bean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermoplastic-matrix composite materials have unique advantages over traditional thermosets including faster processing, improved fracture toughness, and recyclability. These and other benefits have caused increasing interest in the use of these materials in both aerospace and automotive industries. Due to the differences in behavior, these materials require a different type of manufacturing process to thermoset matrix composites. This manufacturing process generally involves using pre manufactured tape-layers. These layers, containing both thermoplastic-matrix and fiber-reinforcement, are aligned to the desired orientation, and stacked up into a “tailored blank” using an automated tape layup machine. They are then heated to the thermoplastic melting temperature …

Modeling Of Selective Laser Sintering/ Selective Laser Melting, Xuan Wang, Connor West Jan 2017

Modeling Of Selective Laser Sintering/ Selective Laser Melting, Xuan Wang, Connor West

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Selective laser sintering and selective laser melting are powder based additive manufacturing (AM) process that can rapidly manufacture parts with comparable mechanical properties to conventional manufacturing methods directly from digital files. However, the processing recipe development and design optimization of AM parts are often based on trial and error which erodes the benefit of AM. Modeling is a powerful tool to enable faster development cycle by significantly reducing the experimental efforts. In this paper we discussed the current status of selective laser sintering/melting modeling, in which the laser and powder interaction was studied to understand and predict the process and …

Remanufacturing Cleaning Process Evaluation, Comparison And Planning, Ozan Yagar Aug 2012

Remanufacturing Cleaning Process Evaluation, Comparison And Planning, Ozan Yagar

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis aims to combine previous research on remanufacturing cleaning processes and applications into a single decision-making tool, in the form of software, which a remanufacturer can use to find a cleaning system that matches their specific demands. This thesis will provide an in-depth review of each cleaning process, the chemicals used in those processes, and the contamination types for which they were developed. This research also provides evaluation and comparison that assists remanufacturers in designing their cleaning systems. Finally, there will be a description and demonstration of the software. The ultimate goal is to find correct cleaning process to …

Transport Phenomena Associated With Liquid Metal Flow Over Topographically Modified Surfaces, Wen Liu Jan 2012

Transport Phenomena Associated With Liquid Metal Flow Over Topographically Modified Surfaces, Wen Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering

Brazing and soldering, as advanced manufacturing processes, are of significant importance to industrial applications. It is widely accepted that joining by brazing or soldering is possible if a liquid metal wets the solids to be joined. Wetting, hence spreading and capillary action of liquid metal (often called filler) is of significant importance. Good wetting is required to distribute liquid metal over/between the substrate materials for a successful bonding.

Topographically altered surfaces have been used to exploit novel wetting phenomena and associated capillary actions, such as imbibitions (a penetration of a liquid front over/through a rough, patterned surface). Modification of surface …
