The Effect Of Parameters In Cryogenic Treatment On Mechanical Properties Of Tool Steel: A Review, Ronaldus Caesariano Ekaputra, Myrna Ariati Mochtar

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings (JMEF)

Tool steel is classified as special alloy steel which proposed as dies or mold materials as their high mechanical properties and dimensional stability. In order to improve tool steel’s mechanical properties, heat treatment process, especially, cryogenic treatment is conducted. Cryogenic treatment is done by exposing tool steel material at sub-zero liquid/gas media after heated at austenite temperature. This process significantly affects the martensite phase transformation increase and avoids retained austenite emersion. In particular, the higher martensite volume fraction, the higher hardness and wear resistance value of tool steel. It had been proven that adjusting critical process parameters of cryogenic treatment …

Bending Nanoindentation And Plasticity Noise In Fcc Single And Polycrystals, Ryder Bolin, Hakan Yavas, Hengxu Song, Kevin J. Hemker, Stefanos Papanikolaou

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Abstract: We present a high-throughput nanoindentation study of in situ bending effects on incipient plastic deformation behavior of polycrystalline and single-crystalline pure aluminum and pure copper at ultranano depths (< 200 nm). We find that hardness displays a statistically inverse dependence on in-plane stress for indentation depths smaller than 10 nm, and the dependence disappears for larger indentation depths. In contrast, plastic noise in the nanoindentation force and displacement displays statistically robust noise features, independently of applied stresses. Our experimental results suggest the existence of a regime in Face Centered Cubic (FCC) crystals where ultranano hardness is sensitive to residual applied stresses, but plasticity pop-in noise is insensitive to it.

Microstructures And Hardness Of Tig Welded Experimental 57fe15cr25ni Steel, Parikin Parikin, Mohammad Dani, Abu Khalid Rivai, Agus Hadi Ismoyo, Riza Iskandar, Arbi Dimyati

Makara Journal of Technology

The microstructures and hardness of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welded experimental 57Fe15Cr25Ni steel were investigated through optical–scanning electron microscopy analyses and with a hardness tester, respectively. The welding process restructured the constituent atoms into regular and irregular crystal lattices. Rapid cooling of the weld metal allowed the formation of a dendritic (columnar) structure, with porous grains. By contrast, slow cooling influenced HAZ and led to the formation of grain structures. The crystal lattice became more organized and larger than other zones. Meanwhile, the base metal formed circular nets that covered large area inside thick and thin grain boundaries. The diffraction …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microstructural analysis and micro-hardness measurements were performed on different planes of 316L stainless steel fabricated by direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technique. A fine cellular network was observed within the steel microstructure, where morphology of most cells changed from columnar on XZ-plane (vertical section) to equiaxed on XY-plane (horizontal section). Correspondingly, morphology of most grains was found to alter from columnar for the XZ-plane to equiaxed in the case of the XY-plane. Moreover, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a fully austenitic structure for both the planes. The average micro-hardness value for the XZ-plane and XY-plane was insignificantly (≈ 3%) different, …

Cryogenic Processing Of Al 7050-T7451 Alloy For Improved Surface Integrity, Bo Huang

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering

Al 7050-T7451 alloy with good combinations of strength, stress corrosion cracking resistance and toughness, is used broadly in the aerospace/aviation industry for fatigue-critical airframe structural components. However, it is also considered as a highly anisotropic alloy as the crack growth behavior along the short transverse direction is very different from the one in the long transverse direction, due to the inhomogeneous microstructure with the elongated grains distributed in the work material used in the sheet/plate applications. Further processes on these materials are needed to improve its mechanical and material properties and broaden its applications.

The material with ultra-fine or nano …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nano-Composite Lead-Free Solder, D. Lin, C. Kuo, T. Srivatsan, M. Petraroli, Guo-Xiang Wang

Dr. Guo-Xiang Wang

A series of experiments conducted on a lead-free eutectic solder (Sn-3.5%Ag) have shown that addition of trace amounts of nanometer-sized particles does have an influence on mechanical properties of materials. In this study, three different types of nanoparticles (copper, nickel and iron) were chosen as the reinforcing candidate. For each particulate reinforcement the reflow process was performed under identical cooling conditions. Addition of trace amounts of nano-particles alters the kinetics governing solidification of the composite solder paste while concurrently exerting an influence on microstructural development, particularly the formation and presence of second phases in the solidified end product. The nano-sized …

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

This study introduces alternative methods to determine the elastoplastic properties of bovine-derived Hydroxyapatite (HA) porous bone graft through a set of nanoindentation tests with a Berkovich indenter. Generally, experimental data obtained from nanoindentation tests are force displacement, hardness and elastic modulus. However, to determine plastic properties such as strength coefficient and work hardening exponent of bovine HA, analytical or inverse finite element models are required. In this paper, the effect of sintering temperature on these properties of HA is studied for the range of 1000-1400 degrees C. The direct and inverse Finite Element (FE) simulation models for nanoindentation tests were …

Nanomechanical Characterization Of Cavity Growth And Rupture In Hydrogen-Implanted Single-Crystal Batio3., Young-Bae Park, Patrick Nardi, Xiaodong Li, Harry A. Atwater

Xiaodong Li

A thermodynamic model of cavitynucleation and growth in ion-implanted single-crystal BaTiO3 layer is proposed, and cavity formation is related to the measured mechanical properties to better understand hydrogen implantation-induced layer transfer processes for ferroelectric thin films. The critical radius for cavitynucleation was determined experimentally from blistering experiments performed under isochronal anneal conditions and was calculated using continuum mechanical models for deformation and fracture, together with thermodynamic models. Based on thermodynamic modeling, we suggest that cavitiesgrow toward the cracking criteria at a critical blister size whereupon gas is emitted from ruptured cavities. The main driving force for layer splitting is the …

Gadolinia Doped Hafnia (Gd2o3- Hfo2) Thermal Barrier Coatings For Gas Turbine Applications, Satya Kiran Gullapalli

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Thermal efficiency of the gas turbines is influenced by the operating temperature of the hot gas path components. The material used for the hot gas path components can only withstand temperature up to a certain limit. Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) provide the additional thermal protection for these components and help the gas turbine achieve higher firing temperatures. Traditionally available yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) TBCs have a limitation up to 1200 C due to their phase transformation. The present work focuses on gadolinia based hafnia (GSH) TBCs to study their potential to replace the YSZ coatings. Different compositions of gadolinia doped …

Theses and Dissertations

High strength low alloy (HSLA) steels have been developed to simultaneously have high yield strength and high fracture toughness. However, in practical applications steel must be welded. Traditional arc welding has proven detrimental to the fracture toughness of HSLA steels. Friction stir welding has recently shown mixed results in welding HSLA steels. The range of welding parameters used in these recent studies however has been very limited. With only a few welding parameters tested, the effect of spindle speed, travel speed, and heat input on the fracture toughness of friction stir welded HSLA steel remains unknown. To understand how the …

Nanoindentation Of The A And C Domains In A Tetragonal Batio3 Single Crystal, Young-Bae Park, Matthew J. Dicken, Zhi-Hui Xu, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Nanoindentation in conjunction with piezoresponse force microscopy was used to study domain switching and to measure the mechanical properties of individual ferroelectric domains in a tetragonal BaTiO3 single crystal. It was found that nanoindentation has induced local domain switching; the a and c domains of BaTiO3 have different elastic moduli but similar hardness.Nanoindentationmodulus mapping on the a and c domains further confirmed such difference in elasticity. Finite element modeling was used to simulate the von Mises stress and plastic strain profiles of the indentations on both a and c domains, which introduces a much higher stress level than …
