Soft vibrational robots are robots that incorporate compliant structures into their design and are driven by oscillating actuators. A recent, popular version of a soft vibrational robot is the bristle bot, which uses flexible bristles and a vibration motor to propel itself across surfaces and through pipes. This motion is primarily driven by stick-slip dynamics resulting from asymmetric frictional forces applied at the bristle tips. This project will study the design and testing of a low-cost dynamometer for milling dynamic force measurement. The monolithic design is based on constrained-motion/flexure-based kinematics, where force is inferred from displacement measured using a low-cost optical interrupter (i.e., a knife edge that partially interrupts the light beam in an emitter-detector pair). The time-dependent displacement of the dynamometer’s moving platform caused by the milling force is converted to the frequency domain, multiplied by the inverse of the dynamometer’s ideally single degree of freedom (SDOF) frequency response function (FRF), and converted back into the time-domain to obtain the time-dependent cutting force. Network representation provides a natural framework for the study of real world complex systems. From social networks and animal groups to interneuronal communications and power grid systems, complex patterns of interaction can be captured and modeled using networks in a simple mathematical form. In many cases, however, a faithful network representation of the system is not readily available. The effect of wall proximity on the mechanism of flow-induced vibration of a circular cylinder mounted in a wind tunnel and free to vibrate with two degrees-of-freedom near a rigid plane boundary were examined at a Reynolds number of 1.86 x 105. Hot-wire anemometry and cylinder-mounted accelerometers were used to characterize the flow-induced vibration of the cylinder. In the near wall region (gap ratios, G/D< 0.4) the system was found to exhibit symptoms of movement-induced vibration resulting from the push-and-draw effect of the cylinder pushing into and out of the fluid immediately upstream and downstream of the cylinder. The variation of the width of the separated wake region with the cylinder motion produces a force in phase with the cylinder velocity, resulting in excitation of the cylinder motion. For G/D > 1.0, the alternate shedding of vortices (the Kármán vortex street) produces a fluctuating lift on the body. These include open-loop vs. closed-loop control, speed vs. position control, and DC motor response curves. Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators paired in an antagonistic arrangement can be used to produce mechanisms that replicate human biomechanics. To investigate this proposal, the biomechanical articulation of the elbow by means of the biceps brachii muscle is compared with that of a SMA actuated arm. This is accomplished by parametric analysis of a crank-slider kinematic mechanism actuated, first, with an experimentally characterized SMA wire and then an idealized musculotendon actuator based on actuation properties of muscles published in the literature. Extensive research on micro/nanomechanical resonators has been performed recently due to their potential to serve as ultra-sensitive devices in chemical/biosensing. These applications often necessitate liquid-phase sensing, introducing significant fluid-induced inertia and energy dissipation that reduces the resonator’s performance. To minimize the detrimental fluid effects on such devices, a novel microdisk resonator supported by two tangentially-oriented, axially-driven “legs” is investigated analytically and effects of the system parameters on the resonator/sensor performance are explored. This research focuses on the development of an eight degree of freedom vehicle model in the MATLAB computing language. Its purpose is to provide flexibility in the modeling and implementation of signal inputs and crash avoidance logic while maintaining accuracy in the physics of the vehicle’s motion. Firstly, the equations of motion for the bodies involved under a reasonable set of assumptions were developed. Next the model was translated to computer code. "Compliant mechanisms derive some or all of their mobility from the deflection of flexible members. A pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM) provides an elegant and simple way of modeling and analyzing traditionally nonlinear large-deflection problems pertaining to compliant mechanisms. In this work, several aspects pertainting to the dynamics of compliant mechanisms are considered. First, dynamic models are derived to predict not only the natural frequency of the large-deflection systems, but also the transient response, using the PRBM approach. The novel concept of a "variable geometry frame" is introduced and explored through a three-dimensional robotic surface which is devised and implemented using triangular modules. The link design is optimized using surplus motor dimensions as firm constraints, and round numbers for further arbitrary constraints. Each module is connected by a passive six-bar mechanism that mimics the constraints of a spherical joint at each triangle intersection. A three dimensional inkjet printer is used to create a six-module prototype designed around surplus stepper motors powered by an old computer power supply as a proof-of-concept example.

The knee joint plays an essential role in the human musculoskeletal system. It has evolved to withstand extreme loading conditions, while providing almost frictionless joint movement. However, its performance may be disrupted by disease, anatomical deformities, soft tissue imbalance or injury. Knee disorders are often puzzling, and accurate diagnosis may be challenging. This study presents the theoretical results and experimental validation of an adjustable stiffness mechanism. The use of redundant actuation is emphasized in the design of a one-degree-of-freedom Watt II mechanism capable of independently controlling the effective stiffness without a change in equilibrium position. This approach is in contrast to previous spring mechanism designs unable to actively control the spring rate independent of deflection, and has potential applications in various types of suspension and assembly systems. Direct Machining And Control (DMAC) is a new method of controlling machine tools directly from process planning software. A motion planning module is developed for the DMAC system that operates directly off path geometry without pre-tessellation. The motion planner is developed with the intent to process Bezier curves. The motion planning module includes a deterministic predictor-corrector-type curve interpolator, a dynamics limiting module, and a two-pass jerk-limited speed profiling algorithm. The methods are verified by machining an automotive surface in a clay medium and evaluating the resultant machine dynamics, feed rate, and chordal error throughout the machining process.
