Three Dimensional Simulations Of Tornado Sheltering Effect Of Man-Made Structures, Piotr Gorecki
Theses and Dissertations
A three dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was utilized to investigate tornado-like vortex interactions with wide man-made structures. The tornado-like wind profile was approximated using Rankine vortex model. By utilizing the CFD model, it was explained why tornadoes exhibit less damage on leeward side of large structures. During the preliminary stage of this study, a perpendicular vortex-prism interaction was analyzed. The prism height and the length were equal to the vortex core radius. The prism was also 12 times wider than the vortex core radius. During the vortex-prism interaction, the near-ground portion of the vortex was blocked by the ...
Numerical Simulation Of Flow In Ozonation Process, Jie Zhang
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the last two decades, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has shown great potential as a powerful and cost-efficient tool to troubleshoot existing disinfection contactors and improve future designs for the water and wastewater treatment utilities.
In the first part of this dissertation two CFD simulation methodologies or strategies for computing turbulent flow are evaluated in terms of the predicted hydraulic performance of contactors. In the LES (large eddy simulation) methodology, the more energetic, larger scales of the turbulence are explicitly computed or resolved by the grid. In the less computationally intensive RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) methodology, only the mean component of ...
Fast Cfd Simulation Method For Indoor Environment Modeling, Haidong Wang
Civil Engineering Graduate Theses & Dissertations
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been becoming an important tool in building environment and airflow modeling. Well validated CFD model can provide more detailed and informative results than other computer models and physical experiment. However, the significant computational cost of CFD has always been the main factor that restricting its broader application.
This study reviews the various means of reducing the computational cost of CFD in literature. With considering the characteristics and result accuracy requirement in indoor environment quality (IEQ) study, the most important factors that affect the computing cost are identified: grid resolution, turbulence modeling and velocity-pressure decoupling algorithm ...
