Continuous Production Of Nanotubes And Carbon Clusters By Use Of The Revolver-Injection-Type Arc Jet Producer, Tetsu Mieno, Naoki Matsumoto, Takahashi Tomie, H. Inoue
Makara Journal of Technology
Efficient and continuous production of fullerenes, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), and carbon nano-particles has been developed by the JxB arc jet method, where the Lorentz force of magnetic field jets out gaseous carbon particles to the JxB direction. In order to realize continuous mass production of these carbon clusters, the revolverinjection- type arc jet producer (RIT-AJP) has been developed. Production of fullerenes, endohedral metallo-fullerenes, SWNTs, metal-encapsulated carbon nano particles has been examined.

Heat Transfer Enhancement And Applications Of Femtosecond Laser Processed Metallic Surfaces, Corey M. Kruse
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the present work, functionalized 304 stainless steel metallic surfaces were created with the use of a Femtosecond Laser Surface Processing (FLSP) technique. The laser processing technique produces self-organized micro/nanostructures on the surface. The heat transfer performance of various FLSP functionalized surfaces were characterized through pool boiling and Leidenfrost experiments. Enhancement in both the nucleate and film boiling heat transfer were observed through an increase of the critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficient as well as shifts in the Leidenfrost temperature respectively. For both experiments, a polished reference sample was used as a baseline line to compare against the …

Analysis Of Vibration Generated By The Rubbing Of Flat Surfaces, Zahrul Fuadi
Makara Journal of Technology
Among the phenomena that occur as a result of contact between two surfaces is friction sound, in which surface roughness is of great importance. In this study, the parameter of contact stiffness is used to explain the frequency characteristic of vibration generated by the rubbing of flat surfaces under a small load. A 3-disk configuration rubbing method was used, which provides a unique characteristic of the system's frequency response function containing specific information about the rubbing vibrations. It is shown that the peak frequency of the rubbing vibration can be explained by using a two-degrees-of-freedom model incorporating the parameter of …

Carbon Dioxide Photoreduction With Water Vapor By Titanium-Containing Magnesium-Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxides, Jinye Xu
Theses and Dissertations
Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into value-added solar fuels is a promising approach to simultaneously address the greenhouse gas pollution and energy shortage issues. TiO2, the most widely studied photocatalyst, suffers from drawbacks like fast electron-hole recombination and limited CO2 adsorption. In this study, Ti-containing MgAl layered double hydroxides (MgAl/Ti-LDHs) were designed to provide high activity of CO2 photoreduction by dispersing Ti species over MgAl-LDHs which have been extensively investigated as CO2 adsorbent. This study was the first attempt to apply MgAl/Ti-LDHs for photoreduction of CO2 with water vapor.
MgAl/Ti-LDHs were prepared through coprecipitation (CP) method, the most common technique for …

Mega: An Energy Aware Algorithm For Self-Powered Wireless Sensor Networks In Sustainable Smart Infrastructure, Dong Qi, Yu Chen, Shahrzad Towfighian
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
Smart infrastructure is attractive for possessing many desirable features, such as uninterrupted monitoring of health conditions, timely response to damages, and human-infrastructure interactions. Embedded sensors that collectinformation are critical for decision making. However, the lifetime of electronic sensors is a constraint to infrastructure lifetime if sensors are physically embedded in the infrastructure at construction time. In this paper, we studied a self-powered wireless sensor network that harvests energy from mechan-ical vibration in the environment. A dynamic, hierarchical algorithm called MEGA is proposed that constructs clusters and elects the cluster head based on residue energy and energy harvest rate. Taking a …

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has invested considerable effort in developing fireproof high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. Due to the nature of LLNL’s research, the air leaving its lab facilities must be filtered before it is released into the atmosphere; thus, each laboratory is equipped with large banks of HEPA filters through which all internal air is exhausted. Over the years, however, fires have erupted in the labs and entire banks of HEPA filters have been destroyed, resulting in repairs and crucial downtime that prove costly.
Engineers and scientists alike have been seeking a permanent solution to this problem, and one …
