Simulated Annealing Technique To Design Minimum Cost Exchanger, Nadeem Muhammed Khalfe, Sandip K. Lahiri, Shiv K. Wadhwa

Nadeem Khalfe

Owing to the wide utilization of heat exchangers in industrial processes, their cost minimization is an important target for both designers and users. Traditional design approaches are based on iterative procedures which gradually change the design and geometric parameters to satisfy a given heat duty and constraints. Although well proven, this kind of approach is time consuming and may not lead to cost effective design as no cost criteria are explicitly accounted for. The present study explores the use of non-traditional optimization technique called simulated annealing (SA), for design optimization of shell and tube heat exchangers from an economic point …

Starting Radial Subdiffusion From A Central Point Through A Diverging Medium (A Sphere): Heat-Balance Integral Method, Jordan Hristov Dec 2011

Starting Radial Subdiffusion From A Central Point Through A Diverging Medium (A Sphere): Heat-Balance Integral Method, Jordan Hristov

Jordan Hristov

The work presents an integral solution of the time-fractional subdiffusion equation as alternative approach to those employing hypergeometric functions. The integral solution suggests a preliminary defined profile with unknown coefficients and the concept of penetration (boundary layer) well known from the heat diffusion and hydrodynamics. The profile satisfies the boundary conditions imposed at the boundary of the boundary layer that allows its coefficients to be expressed through the boundary layer depth as unique parameter describing the profile. The technique is demonstrated by a solution of a time fractional radial equation concerning anomalous diffusion from a central point source in a …

Development Of A Compression Test Device For Investigating Interaction Between Diffusion Of Biodiesel And Large Deformation In Rubber Dec 2011

Development Of A Compression Test Device For Investigating Interaction Between Diffusion Of Biodiesel And Large Deformation In Rubber

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Motivated by environmental and economic factors, biodiesel has been introduced to partially replace the diminishing stock of petroleum-based fuel. However, the use of biodiesel such as palm biodiesel is placing additional demands on automotive components, e.g. rubber components, due to a compatibility issue in the fuel system. In engineering applications where hostile environments are involved, the long-term mechanical response of rubber components is affected by interactions existed between diffusion of liquids into the material and fluctuating multiaxial loading. Hence, it is crucial to investigate the durability of rubber components in this aggressive environment. A number of studies on static immersion …

Designing Carbon Taxation Schemes For Automobiles: A Simulation Exercise For Germany, Adamos Adamou, Sofronis Clerides, Theodoros Zachariadis Dec 2011

Designing Carbon Taxation Schemes For Automobiles: A Simulation Exercise For Germany, Adamos Adamou, Sofronis Clerides, Theodoros Zachariadis

Theodoros Zachariadis

Vehicle taxation based on CO2 emissions is increasingly being adopted worldwide in order to shift consumer purchases to low-carbon cars, yet little is known about the effectiveness and overall economic impact of these schemes. We focus on feebate schemes, which impose a fee on high-carbon vehicles and give a rebate to purchasers of low-carbon automobiles. We estimate a discrete choice model of demand for automobiles in Germany and simulate the impact of alternative feebate schemes on emissions, consumer welfare, public revenues and firm profits. The analysis shows that a well-designed scheme can lead to emission reductions without reducing overall welfare.

Transient Flow Of A Generalized Second Grade Fluid Due To A Constant Surface Shear Stress: An Approximate Integral-Balance Solution, Jordan Hristov Dec 2011

Transient Flow Of A Generalized Second Grade Fluid Due To A Constant Surface Shear Stress: An Approximate Integral-Balance Solution, Jordan Hristov

Jordan Hristov

Integral balance solution to start-up problem of a second grade viscoelastic fluid caused by a constant surface stress at the surface has been developed by an entire-domain parabolic profile with an unspecified exponent. The closed form solution explicitly defines two dimensionless similarity variables ξ = y ν t and 2 D0 p t= χ = ν β , responsible for the viscous and the elastic responses of the fluid to the step jump at the boundary. Numerical simulations demonstrating the effect of the various operating parameter and fluid properties on the developed flow filed, as well comparison with the existing …

Effect Of Gold Content On The Reliability Of Snagcu Solder Joints, Jianbiao Pan, J. Silk, M. Powers, P. Hyland

Jianbiao Pan

Electroplated Ni/Au over Cu is a popular metallization for printed circuit board finish as well as for component leads, especially wire-bondable high-frequency packages, where the gold thickness requirement for wire bonding is high. The general understanding is that less than 3 wt% of Au is acceptable in SnPb solder joints. However, little is known about the effect of Au content on the reliability of SnAgCu solder joints. The purpose of this paper is to determine the acceptable level of Au in SAC305 solder joints. Three different package platforms with different Au thicknesses were assembled on boards with two different Au …

Optimization Of The Acoustic Performance Of Polyimide Foams, Olivier Doutres, Noureddine Atalla, Rebecca Wulliman, Shari Ferguson, Steve Bailey Jul 2011

Optimization Of The Acoustic Performance Of Polyimide Foams, Olivier Doutres, Noureddine Atalla, Rebecca Wulliman, Shari Ferguson, Steve Bailey

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

Due to their low weight, high fire resistance and good mechanical strength, SOLIMIDE® Polyimide foams are good candidates for sound packages in aerospace sound transmission applications. However, their high resistance to airflow limits the sound absorption efficiency inside a double wall structure and thus the sound transmission loss of the structure. The paper discusses two concepts to improve the transmission efficiency of such materials for double wall applications: (i) improving its sound absorption behavior by removing mechanically or chemically the cell membranes and thus decreasing both the flow resistance and tortuosity, (ii) coupling the Polyimide foams to screens (porous or …

A Practical Impedance Tube Method To Estimate The Normal Incidence Sound Transmission Loss Of Double Wall Structure, Olivier Doutres, Noureddine Atalla Jul 2011

A Practical Impedance Tube Method To Estimate The Normal Incidence Sound Transmission Loss Of Double Wall Structure, Olivier Doutres, Noureddine Atalla

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

The objective of this paper is to propose a practical impedance tube method to optimize the sound transmission loss of double wall structure by concentrating on the sound package placed inside the structure. In a previous work, the authors derived an expression that breaks down the transmission loss of a double wall structure containing a sound absorbing blanket separated from the panels by air layers in terms of three main contributions; (i) sound transmission loss of the panels, (ii) sound transmission loss of the blanket and (iii) sound absorption due to multiple reflections inside the cavity. The sound transmission loss …

Transferts De Chaleur Dans Un Réacteur Thermochimique Solaire Muni D’Un Récepteur Volumique Poreux, Hernando Romero Paredes Rubio

Hernando Romero Paredes Rubio

Effects Of Co Nanoparticle Addition To Sn-3.8ag-0.7cu Solder On Interfacial Structure After Reflow And Ageing May 2011

Effects Of Co Nanoparticle Addition To Sn-3.8ag-0.7cu Solder On Interfacial Structure After Reflow And Ageing

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Effects of Co nanoparticle additions to Sn-3.8Ag-0.7Cu on the structure of solder/copper interface have been studied after reflow and high temperature ageing (150 °C, up to 1008 h). Results show that the Co nanoparticles substantially suppress the growth of Cu3Sn but enhance Cu 6Sn5 growth. Cobalt nanoparticles reduce interdiffusion coefficient in Cu3Sn. It is suggested that the Co nanoparticles undergo surface dissolution during reflow and exert their influence, at least partially, through alloying effect. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Compatibility Of Automotive Materials In Biodiesel: A Review Mar 2011

Compatibility Of Automotive Materials In Biodiesel: A Review

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Use of biodiesel in automobile can significantly reduce our dependence of fossil fuel and help reduce environmental pollution. However, there are concerns over the compatibility of currently used automotive materials in biodiesel. A few automobile manufacturers extended their warranty only to lower blends of biodiesel (e.g. B5). Higher blends (e.g. B50 or B100) are still not covered by warranty. In automobile fuel system, metallic materials like ferrous alloy and non-ferrous alloys, and elastomers come in contact with fuel. Biodiesel, having different chemical characteristics from diesel, can interact with materials in a different way. It can cause corrosive and tribological attack …
