In this paper we compare two different discharges that can be obtained in a DBD configuration, that is to say the filamentary discharge (usual regime in atmospheric DBD) with the Atmospheric Pressure Townsend Discharge (APTD), which is a homogeneous regime obtained in nitrogen atmosphere. The aim is to help in the understanding of the processes which control the transition from one regime to the other. To do so, the discharge is characterized through electrical measurements, coupled with optical diagnostics among which Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for radical density measurements. The influence of the addition of small quantities of additives on …

This paper describes the architecture and implementation of an autonomous passenger vehicle designed to navigate using locally perceived information in preference to potentially inaccurate or incomplete map data. The vehicle architecture was designed to handle the original DARPA Urban Challenge requirements of perceiving and navigating a road network with segments defined by sparse waypoints. The vehicle implementation includes many heterogeneous sensors with significant communications and computation bandwidth to capture and process high-resolution, high-rate sensor data. The output of the comprehensive environmental sensing subsystem is fed into a kinodynamic motion planning algorithm to generate all vehicle motion. The requirements of driving …

A Heuristic Scheduling Scheme In Multiuser Ofdma Networks, Zheng Sun, Zhiqiang He, Ruochen Wang, Kai Niu
Zheng Sun
Conventional heterogeneous-traffic scheduling schemes utilize zero-delay constraint for real-time services, which aims to minimize the average packet delay among real-time users. However, in light or moderate load networks this strategy is unnecessary and leads to low data throughput for non-real-time users. In this paper, we propose a heuristic scheduling scheme to solve this problem. The scheme measures and assigns scheduling priorities to both real-time and non-real-time users, and schedules the radio resources for the two user classes simultaneously. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme efficiently handles the heterogeneous-traffic scheduling with diverse QoS requirements and alleviates the unfairness between real-time …

This work reports on piezoelectric Aluminum Nitride (AlN) based dual-beam RF MEMS switches that have been monolithically integrated with AlN contour-mode resonators. The dual-beam switch design presented in this paper intrinsically compensates for the residual stress in the deposited films, requires low actuation voltage (5-20 V), facilitates active pull-off to open the switch and fast switching times (1 to 2 µsec). This work also presents the combined response (cascaded S-parameters) of a resonator and a switch that were co-fabricated on the same substrate. The response shows that the resonator can be effectively turned on and off by the switch. A …

Criteria On Utility Designing Of Convex Optimization In Fdma Networks, Zheng Sun, Wenjun Xu, Zhiqiang He, Kai Niu

In this paper, we investigate the network utility maximization problem in FDMA systems. We summarize with a suite of criteria on designing utility functions so as to achieve the global optimization convex. After proposing the general form of the utility functions, we present examples of commonly used utility function forms that are consistent with the criteria proposed in this paper, which include the well-known proportional fairness function and the sigmoidal-like functions. In the second part of this paper, we use numerical results to demonstrate a case study based on the criteria mentioned above, which deals with the subcarrier scheduling problem …

Modeling And Control Of Formations Of Nonholonomic Mobile Robots, Jaydev P. Desai, James P. Ostrowski, R. Vijay Kumar
R. Vijay Kumar
This paper addresses the control of a team of nonholonomic mobile robots navigating in a terrain with obstacles while maintaining a desired formation and changing formations when required, using graph theory. We model the team as a triple, (g, r, H), consisting of a group element g that describes the gross position of the lead robot, a set of shape variables r that describe the relative positions of robots, and a control graph H that describes the behaviors of the robots in the formation. Our framework enables the representation and enumeration of possible control graphs and the coordination of transitions between …

Control Of Mechanical Systems With Rolling Constraints: Application To Dynamic Control Of Mobile Robots, Nilanjan Sarkar, Xiaoping Yun, R. Vijay Kumar
R. Vijay Kumar
There are many examples of mechanical systems which require rolling contacts between two or more rigid bodies. Rolling contacts engender nonholonomic constraints in an otherwise holonomic system. In this paper, we develop a unified approach to the control of mechanical systems subject to both holonomic and nonholonomic constraints. We first present a state space realization of a constrained system and show that it is not input-state linearizable. We then discuss the input-output linearization and zero dynamics of the system. This approach is applied to the dynamic control of mobile robots. Two types of control algorithms for mobile robots are investigated: …
Melt Dispersion Versus Diffusive Oxidation Mechanism For Aluminum Nanoparticles: Critical Experiments And Controlling Parameters, Valery I. Levitas, Michelle L. Pantoya, Birce Dikici
Melt Dispersion Versus Diffusive Oxidation Mechanism For Aluminum Nanoparticles: Critical Experiments And Controlling Parameters, Valery I. Levitas, Michelle L. Pantoya, Birce Dikici
Birce Dikici Ph.D
Critical experiments were performed on Al and MoO3 thermites. The diameter and alumina shell thickness of the Alnanoparticles were varied, and flame propagation velocities were measured. The results strongly support the melt-dispersion mechanism and contradict the diffusionoxidation mechanism. The parameters that control the oxidation rate and flame velocity are justified and directions for the synthesis of Alnanoparticles (which are opposite to the current directions based on diffusionoxidation) are suggested. An equation for the flame velocity versus Alnanoparticle geometrical parameters, thermomechanical properties, and synthesis parameters is formulated.

This poster reports on the August 2007 Black Sea Expedition of the Institute for Archaeological Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island (IAO) and the Institute for Exploration (IFE), in collaboration with the Department of the Underwater Heritage of Ukraine. This year’s work marks a new phase in a multi-year (2000–2012) archaeological and oceanographic survey of the Black Sea. 2007 fieldwork focuses on two Byzantine shipwrecks. The 10th century C.E. shipwreck Chersonesos A (discovered in 2006) lies at 140 m depth in the suboxic zone off the Crimean peninsula. The ship carried a cargo of one-handled jars of a widely …

Validity Of The One-Dimensional Limp Model For Porous Media, Olivier Doutres, Nicolas Dauchez, Jean-Michel Génevaux, Olivier Dazel
Olivier Doutres Ph.D.
A straightforward criterion for determining the validity of the limp model validity for porous materials is addressed here. The limp model is an “equivalent fluid” model which gives a better description of porous behavior than the well known “rigid frame” model. It is derived from the poroelastic Biot model, assuming that the frame has no bulk stiffness. A criterion is proposed for identifying the porous materials for which the limp model can be used. It relies on a new parameter, the Frame Stiffness Influence FSI, based on porous material properties. The critical values of FSI under which the limp model …
