Three-Dimensional Modeling Of The Plasma Arc In Arc Welding, Gu Xu, J. Hu, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most previous three-dimensional modeling on gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) focuses on the weld pool dynamics and assumes the two-dimensional axisymmetric Gaussian distributions for plasma arc pressure and heat flux. In this article, a three-dimensional plasma arc model is developed, and the distributions of velocity, pressure, temperature, current density, and magnetic field of the plasma arc are calculated by solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy, as well as part of the Maxwell's equations. This three-dimensional model can be used to study the nonaxisymmetric plasma arc caused by external perturbations such ...

Localised Galvanic Corrosion Processes In Thermal Spray Coated/Cast Aluminium Alloy Systems, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy Nov 2008

Localised Galvanic Corrosion Processes In Thermal Spray Coated/Cast Aluminium Alloy Systems, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy

Conference Papers

Cast Aluminium Alloys, because of the propensity of aluminium to react with impurities and alloying elements, are prone to developing IM impurities during the solidification process. These IM phases can act, in some fluids, as initiation sites for localised corrosion processes, resulting in degradation phenomena, such as pitting. Whilst Thermal Spray coatings can improve the wear resistance of Cast Aluminium Alloys, their corrosion performance may be hampered by the presence of through porosity within the coating.

The present work details some preliminary studies of the localised corrosion processes occurring at the interface area between a Thermal Spray coating and a ...

Homogeneous Dbd In N2: 1) Lif, Talif And Electrical Measurements, N. Gherardi, Et. Es-Sebbar, C. Sarra-Bourret, N. Naudé, F. Massines

Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar

In this paper we compare two different discharges that can be obtained in a DBD configuration, that is to say the filamentary discharge (usual regime in atmospheric DBD) with the Atmospheric Pressure Townsend Discharge (APTD), which is a homogeneous regime obtained in nitrogen atmosphere. The aim is to help in the understanding of the processes which control the transition from one regime to the other. To do so, the discharge is characterized through electrical measurements, coupled with optical diagnostics among which Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for radical density measurements. The influence of the addition of small quantities of additives on ...

Broadband Measurement Of Rate-Dependent Viscoelasticity At Nanoscale Using Scanning Probe Microscope: Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Example, Zhonghua Xu, Kyongsoo Kim, Qingze Zou, Pranav Shrotriya

Mechanical Engineering Publications

A control approach to achieve nanoscale broadband viscoelasticmeasurement using scanning probe microscope(SPM) is reported. Current SPM-based force measurement is too slow to measure rate-dependent phenomena, and large (temporal) measurement errors can be generated when the sample itself changes rapidly. The recently developed model-less inversion-based iterative control technique is used to eliminate the dynamics and hysteresis effects of the SPM hardware on the measurements, enabling rapid excitation and measurement of rate-dependent material properties. The approach is illustrated by the mechanical characterization of poly(dimethylsiloxane) over a broad frequency range of three orders of magnitude (∼1 Hz to 4.5 KHz).

Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy Of Pyridine Hydrogenation On Platinum Nanoparticles, Kaitlin M. Bratlie, Kyriakos Komvopoulos, Gabor A. Somorjai

Kaitlin M. Bratlie

Pyridine hydrogenation in the presence of a surface monolayer consisting of cubic Pt nanoparticles stabilized by tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) was investigated by sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy using total internal reflection (TIR) geometry. TIR-SFG spectra analysis revealed that a pyridinium cation (C5H5NH+) forms during pyridine hydrogenation on the Pt nanoparticle surface, and the NH group in the C5H5NH+ cation becomes more hydrogen bound with the increase of the temperature. In addition, the surface coverage of the cation decreases with the increase of the temperature. An important contribution of this study is the in situ identification of reaction intermediates adsorbed ...
