A finite-element approach is presented for determining the nonlinear flutter characteristics of two-dimensional isotropic and three-dimensional composite laminated thin panels using the third-order-piston, transverse loading, aerodynamic theory. The unsteady, hypersonic, aerodynamic theory and the von Karman large deflection plate theory are used to formulate the aeroelastic problem. Nonlinear flutter analyses are performed to assess the influence of the higher-order aerodynamic theory on the structure's limit-cycle amplitude and the dynamic pressure of the flow velocity. The Effect Of An Adjacent Viscous Fluid On The Transmission Of Torsional Stress Waves In A Submerged Waveguide, Jin O. Kim, Yuzhou Wang, Haim H. Bau

The effects of an adjacent fluid's viscosity and density on the characteristics of torsional stress waves transmitted in a waveguide with a circular cross section are studied theoretically and experimentally. Expressions for the torsional waves speed, dispersion relations, and attenuation are obtained as functions of the adjacent fluid's viscosity and density. The theoretical results are compared with experimental observations. It is demonstrated that a devices similar to the one described herein can be used as a rugged, real-time, on-lines sensor for measuring the viscosity of a fluid with a known density. In December of 1982, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, with the cooperation and support of the MITRE Corporation, initiated a primarily undergraduate educational program to develop experiments to be flown onboard a NASA Space Shuttle. Christened the MITRE WPI Space Shuttle Program, it sponsored the development of five educationally meritorious experiments over a period of four years. Although the experiments were ready to fly in early 1986, the Challenger disaster delayed their flight until the Spring of 1991. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications to design have tended to focus on modeling and automating aspects of single discipline design tasks. Relatively little attention has thus far been devoted to representing the kinds of design 'metaknowledge' needed to manage the important interface issues that arise in concurrent design, that is, multidisciplinary design decision-making. In this paper, a mathematical programming and simulation method is used to estimate the number of weevils (Neochetina bruchi Hustache, and N. eichhorniae Warner) necessary to initialize the INSECT model which simulates the biological control of waterhyacinth by the weevils. The objective is to estimate the initial input values for the adult population so that the sum of the absolute differences between the observed and the simulated numbers of weevils is minimized. A personal computer simulation model termed "INSECT" has been developed to evaluate biological control of waterhyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms.) by two species of weevil (Neochetina eichhorniae Warner, and N. bruchi Hustache). The model results were compared with the data from three different locations. For each data set, the simulated plant biomass, adult and larva populations were plotted aqainst the 95% confidence intervals of the actual field observations. In many cases, the simulation results were within the 95% confidence intervals, and especially during the growing season, they indicated trends similar to those seen in the field data. The useful operating range of the multistage, axial-flow compressor component of a gas turbine engine limits the extent of operation of that engine.
