The numerical investigation of shock phenomena in gas or liquid media where a specifying relation for internal energy is absent poses special problems. Classically, for gas dynamics the usual procedure is to employ a splitting scheme to remove the source terms from the Euler equations, then up-wind biased shock capturing algorithms are built around the Riemann problem for the system which remains. A finite-element approach is presented for determining the nonlinear flutter characteristics of two-dimensional isotropic and three-dimensional composite laminated thin panels using the third-order-piston, transverse loading, aerodynamic theory. The unsteady, hypersonic, aerodynamic theory and the von Karman large deflection plate theory are used to formulate the aeroelastic problem. Nonlinear flutter analyses are performed to assess the influence of the higher-order aerodynamic theory on the structure's limit-cycle amplitude and the dynamic pressure of the flow velocity. The direct boundary element method (BEM) is used to formulate and numerically simulate the interaction of acoustic waves with submerged elastic structures and subsequently specialized to model finite beam transmission through locally curved elastic surfaces. These are structural-acoustic or fluid-solid interaction problems coupling scalar (acoustic) and vector (elastic) media. The boundary element method (BEM) is used to numerically simulate the interaction of ultrasonic waves with material defects such as voids, inclusions, and open cracks. The time harmonic formulation is in 3D and therefore allows flaws of arbitrary shape to be modeled. The BEM makes such problems feasible because the underlying boundary integral equation only requires a surface (2D) integration and difficulties associated with the seemingly infinite extent of the host domain are not encountered. A computer model has been developed to predict diesel engine particulate emission during transients in speed and torque. The computer model consists of a quasi-steady-state engine combustion model, a dynamic engine model, and a dynamic turbocharger model. The model predictions were compared to experimentally measured particulate emissions. Particulate matter was measured under steady-state conditions, over an EPA transcient cycle, and for discrete segments of various transient cycles;The computer model accurately predicts engine air flow rate, turbocharger speed, and instantaneous engine equivalence ratio.
