Past research on the optimization of building performance has resulted in various control strategies which minimize building energy consumption while maintaining a specified level of indoor environmental quality (e.g., thermal comfort, mass air quality, lighting levels). The optimal control strategy proposed in this study uses a "performance index," which quantifies the "costs" of energy consumption and indoor environmental quality, to mathematically express the operating performance of a building;A procedure is developed for deriving a dynamic system model which relates the indoor environmental quality to the energy consumption of a building. An electrostatic suspension concept was successfully utilized in generating a uniform particulate cloud between two parallel electrodes in air at atmospheric pressure in order to investigate the effect of this cloud on electrical breakdown, electrical discharge, and ignition of combustible gases. Electrical breakdown was initiated by a fast moving injected needle electrode which resulted in a minimal disturbance of the suspension;It was observed that when using a negative needle (electrode), neither the breakdown voltage nor the needle position at breakdown depended significantly on the needle velocity or the particle number density. The lateral stability of the driver/vehicle system is considered. It is first shown that, if the classical problem of the lateral stability of an automobile is considered in an absolute reference frame, the automobile is unstable. A driver responding proportionally to yaw angle and lateral displacement is added to the bicycle model of the automobile and the stability of the driver/vehicle system is considered. The Routh-Hurwitz criterion is applied to the characteristic equation of the system and the critical speed of the driver/vehicle system is obtained. Numerical studies of a plastic ring in axial compression were made using the method of finite element. Standard rings with geometry 6:3:2 (outside diameter:inside diameter:height) were compressed to 8% and 16% deformations with sticking friction for both loaded and unloaded situations;An elastic-plastic finite element program was developed incorporating several different modeling considerations. The displacement discontinuity method is reviewed as a numerical technique for computing stresses and displacements distribution over a plane area in a homogeneous, isotropic, linearly elastic material. The elementary solution for a single line crack in an infinite body is derived. The displacement function over the line segment is assumed to be linear of the form ax + b, where a and b are functions of the displacement at the extreme nodes of the line segment.
