Modeling And Simulation Of Optical Characteristics Of Microelectromechanical Mirror Arrays, Peter C. Roberts Dec 1996

Modeling And Simulation Of Optical Characteristics Of Microelectromechanical Mirror Arrays, Peter C. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) micromirror devices can be used to control the phase of a propagating light wavefront, and in particular to correct aberrations that may be present in the wavefront, due to either atmospheric turbulence or any other type of fixed or time and space varying aberrations. In order to shorten the design cycle of MEMS micromirror devices, computer software is developed to create, from MEMS micromirror device design data, a numerical model of the MEMS device. The model is then used to compute the far field diffraction pattern of a wavefront reflected from the device, and to predict the …

Artificial Cochlea Design Using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, George C. Dalton Ii Dec 1996

Artificial Cochlea Design Using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, George C. Dalton Ii

Theses and Dissertations

The use of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in the design of an artificial cochlea is investigated in depth. Interdigitated finger (comb), cantilever, bridge, and mirror resonators are presented as possible devices used to implement the artificial cochlea. These resonators are demonstrated to be extremely high Q devices, capable of being tuned with a simple DC bias. This suggests a possible change to existing cochlea models that claim highly complex AC feedback as being responsible for changes in the damping of the basilar membrane. The new cochlea model presented here, using MEMS to approximate the tuning of the basilar membrane, may be …

Microelectromechanical Isolation Of Acoustic Wave Resonators, James R. Reid Jr. Dec 1996

Microelectromechanical Isolation Of Acoustic Wave Resonators, James R. Reid Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Microelectromechainical systems (MEMS) is a rapidly expanding field of research into the design and fabrication of actuated mechanical systems on the order of a few micrometers to a few millimeters. MEMS potentially offers new methods to solve a variety of engineering problems. A large variety of MEMS systems including flip-up platforms, scanning micromirrors, and rotating micromirrors are developed to demonstrate the types of MEMS that can be fabricated. The potential of MEMS for reducing the vibration sensitivity of surface acoustic wave and surface transverse wave resonators is then evaluated. A micromachined vibration isolation system is designed and modeled. A fabrication …

Demonstrating Optical Aberration Correction With A Mems Micro-Mirror Device, Shaun R. Hick Dec 1996

Demonstrating Optical Aberration Correction With A Mems Micro-Mirror Device, Shaun R. Hick

Theses and Dissertations

This research conducted the first demonstrated use of a micro-electro-mechanical structure (MEMS) mirror array to correct a static optical aberration. A well-developed technique in adaptive optics imaging systems uses a deformable mirror to reflect the incident wave front to the imaging stage of the system. By matching the surface of the deformable mirror to the shape of the wave front phase distortion, the reflected wave front will be less aberrated before it is imaged. Typical adaptive optics systems use piezo-electric actuated deformable mirrors. This research used an electrostatically actuated, segmented mirror array, constructed by standard MEMS fabrication techniques, to investigate …

Heat Transfer In Microchannels, Xianming Wang Oct 1996

Heat Transfer In Microchannels, Xianming Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this research was to develop an analytical solution to the heat transfer problem in microchannels with slip-flow--a heat transfer problem for gases at low pressures or in extremely small geometries, and to verify this solution experimentally. In this investigation, an analytical expression for the velocity distribution with slip-flow was obtained which involved the Knudsen (Kn) number in an infinite series form. The result showed that the velocity always increased as the Knudsen number was increased. The Knudsen number for extremely small channels may become large enough to affect significantly the velocity distribution and consequently affect the heat …

Numerical Analysis Of Two And Three Dimensional Recessed Flame Holders For Scramjet Applications, Douglas L. Davis Sep 1996

Numerical Analysis Of Two And Three Dimensional Recessed Flame Holders For Scramjet Applications, Douglas L. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the flame holding properties of recessed cavities in supersonic flow using numerical analysis techniques. A simplified analytical model indicated that an important property for flame holding was the lower residence time. Several chemical kinetic rate models for hydrogen and hydrocarbon combustion were compared. The perfectly stirred reactor model also indicated that trace species diffusion should increase flame spreading rate, and that heat loss reduces flame holding limits. After nonreacting calibration, two-dimensional simulations confirmed the perfectly stirred reactor results for blowout limits. Also, the effect of trace species diffusion on flame spreading was shown to be negligible, and …

The Development And Evaluation Of The Knife Finite Element, Brett W. Clark Aug 1996

The Development And Evaluation Of The Knife Finite Element, Brett W. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the development and evaluation of the knife finite element which is a degenerate case of a hexahedral element. The knife connectivity is an artifact of automatic all-hexahedral mesh generators. Currently, knives are propagated to the surface of the mesh for removal. However since this disturbs the surface mesh, other alternatives are needed. This thesis investigates the option of leaving the knife connectivity in the mesh and treating it as a valid finite element. The shape functions and stiffness matrix for the knife element are derived and evaluated using theoretical and practical evaluations. It is concluded that the …

Reaction Based Grasp Force Assignment, Mark W. Hunter Jul 1996

Reaction Based Grasp Force Assignment, Mark W. Hunter

Theses and Dissertations

An iterative method is developed by which the contact forces required to apply an arbitrary wrench (six elements of force and moment) to a stably grasped object may be calculated quickly. The assignment of contact forces, given a required object wrench, is accomplished with the use of fuzzy logic. This concept is referred to as the fuzzy logic reactive system (FLRS). The solution is versatile with respect to goals inherent in the rulebase and the input parameters, and is also applicable for an arbitrary number of contacts. The goal presented in this research, to illustrate the concept of the FLRS, …

A Progressive Damage Methodology For Residual Strength Predictions Of Center-Crack Tension Composite Panels, Timothy William Coats Jul 1996

A Progressive Damage Methodology For Residual Strength Predictions Of Center-Crack Tension Composite Panels, Timothy William Coats

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An investigation of translaminate fracture and a progressive damage methodology was conducted to evaluate and develop residual strength prediction capability for laminated composites with through penetration notches. This is relevant to the damage tolerance of an aircraft fuselage that might suffer an in-flight accident such as an uncontained engine failure. An experimental characterization of several composite materials systems revealed an R-curve type of behavior. Fractographic examinations led to the postulate that this crack growth resistance could be due to fiber bridging, defined here as fractured fibers of one ply bridged by intact fibers of an adjacent ply.

The progressive damage …

Numerical Prediction Of Turbulent Diffusion Flames Formed By Cylindrical Tube Injector, Ali S. Kheireddine

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This work summarizes numerical results for a diffusion flame formed from a cylindrical tube fuel injector, issuing gaseous fuel jet vertically in a quiescent atmosphere. Both pure fuels as well as fuel mixtures are examined. The primary objective is to predict the flame base height as a function of the jet velocity. A finite volume scheme is used to discretize the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the reacting flow, resulting from the turbulent fuel jet motion. The turbulent stresses, and heat and mass fluxes are computed from the Reynolds stress turbulence model. A chemical kinetics model involving a two-step chemical reaction …

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana Jul 1996

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A comprehensive conjunctive-use management model is developed. The dynamics of flow and solute transport processes in connected surface water groundwater systems are integrated by a dual programming management model. The governing aquifer flow parameters and streamflows are treated as stochastic random processes. Multiple realizations of the random field are generated and are explicitly incorporated in a non-linear optimization model along with other system, environmental, and management constraints. To facilitate management of large aquifer systems, a linked simulation-optimization approach is used. The simulation program generates the response matrices for flow and transport processes. The management model then determines optimal well discharges …

An Investigation Of The Characteristics Of Regenerative Heat Exchangers, Timothy J. Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the current research was to investigate the effects of reducing screen thickness on the volume and compactness factor of stacked, wire-screen regenerators. An improved transient step-change method was devised which integrated experimental data with a numerical model of the flow to determine the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor. The improvements to the approach are: (1) the measured inlet temperature trace is used, (2) the heat transfer coefficient is based on a parameter called the sponge effect delay time, and (3) the important effect of the tube surrounding the matrix is included in the numerical model. The …

Global Fuzzy Control Based On Cell Mapping, Tea-Quin Kim May 1996

Global Fuzzy Control Based On Cell Mapping, Tea-Quin Kim

Dissertations

Cell mapping methods can generate global optimal controls for nonlinear dynamic systems. However, the implementation of this approach for on-line control is difficult due to its use of a table-based controller which requires a large amount of memory.

In this dissertation, a cell mapping based systematic method is developed to construct a fuzzy controller to replace the table-based controller for global optimal control of dynamic systems. The method consists of four steps: 1) An optimal control table is generated using a cell mapping algorithm. 2) The cells are linked into trajectories to characterize the optimal dynamic evolution of various cell. …

Reduction Of Inertia-Induced Forces In A General Spatial Mechanism, Sahidur Rahman May 1996

Reduction Of Inertia-Induced Forces In A General Spatial Mechanism, Sahidur Rahman

Dissertations

A computer-aided design procedure has been developed for minimizing the adverse effects of the inertia-induced forces by optimum mass redistribution amongst the links of high speed general spatial linkages. The evaluation of an optimality criterion for the mass redistribution of the mechanism will be carried out with the aid of a quadratic programming technique. This has been found to be successful in minimizing inertia induced forces and torques. The validity of the optimization procedure will be demonstrated by application to one kind of spatial linkage.

No literature has been found on the balancing of a general spatial mechanism, since its …

Relay Ladder Logic And Petri Nets For Discrete Event Control Design : A Comparative Study, Edward Twiss May 1996

Relay Ladder Logic And Petri Nets For Discrete Event Control Design : A Comparative Study, Edward Twiss

Theses

In the 1960's and earlier discrete event systems (DES) were controlled by hardwired electromechanical relay systems. In 1969 an electronic programmable logic controller (PLC) was introduced. PLC's have been programmed utilizing relay ladder logic (RLL). RLL is a graphical programming language with software "devices" used to emulate electromechanical devices. RLL programs, however, often become large and difficult to understand because its graphical representation of physical switching devices obscures the discrete event dynamics inherent in the process to be controlled. Petri nets are a methodology for modeling discrete event systems (DES). Using a Petri net based controller, a control strategy could …

The optimization process makes use of several simple equations to determine a few starting points for design, after which an iterative approach based on experimentation is used to produce the final design. It is found that optimal magnetic moment …

Study Of Periodic Gust Loads On Airfoils, Tatsuya Nakajima Apr 1996

Study Of Periodic Gust Loads On Airfoils, Tatsuya Nakajima

Masters Theses

The wings on aircraft can experience unsteady loads due to atmospheric disturbances; e.g., wind, the wakes of other aircraft, structural vibrations, or some combination of these sources. In some cases flow unsteadiness can be beneficial by augmenting the lift and reducing the drag; under different circumstances temporal variations in the flow can induce stall or cause structural failure.

In this study, the response of isolated (and tandem) NACA 0012 airfoil(s) to time-periodic unsteadiness have been investigated. The sources of unsteadiness include a time-varying free stream flow angle, a time varying free stream velocity magnitude, and an oscillating airfoil.

The predicted …

Unsteady, Transonic Flow Around Delta Wings Undergoing Coupled And Natural Modes Response: A Multidisciplinary Problem, Margaret Anne Menzies

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The unsteady, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Euler equations of rigid-body dynamics are sequentially solved to simulate and analyze the aerodynamic response of a high angle of attack delta wing undergoing oscillatory motion. The governing equations of fluid flow and dynamics of the multidisciplinary problem are solved using a time-accurate solution of the laminar, unsteady, compressible, full Navier-Stokes equations with the implicit, upwind, Roe flux-difference splitting, finite-volume scheme and a four-state Runge-Kutta scheme, respectively. The primary model under consideration consists of a 65° swept, sharp-edged, cropped delta wing of zero thickness at 20° angle of attack. In a freestream …
