Electrode Performance Test On Single Ceramic Fuel Cells Using As Electrolyte Sr‐ And Mg‐Doped Lagao3, Kevin Huang, Man Feng, John Goodenough, Christopher Milliken

Kevin Huang

The electrode performance of a single solid oxide fuel cell was evaluated using a 500 μm thick La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O2.85 (LSGM) as the electrolyte membrane. Comparison of La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ (LSCo) and La0.9Sr0.1MnO3 (LSM) as cathodes showed LSCo gave an exchange current density two orders of magnitude higher than that of LSM. Comparison of CeO2/Ni and LSGM/Ni as anodes showed a degradation of the latter with time, and studies of the anode‐electrolyte interface and the reactivity of NiO and LSGM suggest better anode …

High Temperature Electrolysis Using A Pilot-Scale Cathode-Supported Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Gong Zhang, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

A Siemens cathode-supported solid oxide fuel cell was explored in this study to operate as an electrolysis cell to produce H2 from steam. An in-situ oxygen sensor was implemented in the cell assembly to determine the oxide-to-fuel ratio in the effluent, from which the rate of H2 production and steam utilization were calculated. No H2 was added into the initial steam. The results showed that the rate of H2 production linearly increased with the applied current and the steam can be split into H2 at high utilization. After hundreds of hours' operation, no degradation was observed. However, it was found …

Oxygen Permeation Through Composite Oxide-Ion And Electronic Conductors, Kevin Huang, Michael Schroeder, John Goodenough Feb 2015

Oxygen Permeation Through Composite Oxide-Ion And Electronic Conductors, Kevin Huang, Michael Schroeder, John Goodenough

Kevin Huang

Oxygen permeation through composites consisting of four well-known oxide-ion conductors and a noble metal, Pd or Ag, is reported. The oxides were Zr0.9Y0.1O1.95 (YSZ), (Bi1.75Y0.25O3)0.95(CeO2)0.05 (BYC5), Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SSC), and La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.83Mg0.17O2.815 (LSGM). The results show that (BYC5 + Ag) yields the highest oxygen permeation flux, but the composite deteriorates with time. The composites (SSC + Pd), (LSGM + Pd), and (YSZ + Pd) give stable, but relatively lower oxygen permeation flux in the order of (SSC + Pd) > (LSGM + Pd) > (YSZ + Pd). The composite microstructures indicate that (BYC5 + Ag) has the best percolating network for both oxide-ion and …

Kevin Huang

The effect of molten carbonates (MCs) on polarization resistance (RP), a direct measure of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, of a composite La0.8Sr0.2MnO3+δ/Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ (LSM/GDC) solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode has been systematically investigated in this study over a temperature range of 550–650°C and partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) span of 10−3 ∼ 1 atm. It is shown that the LSM/GDC cathode, either in the pristine or MC-modified states, can be generally modeled by two consecutive parallel circuits consisting of a resistance and a constant phase element (CPE). The high-frequency RP(HF)//CPE(HF) component is related to a charge-transfer process, while the …

Kevin Huang

We here report that a newly discovered superior oxide-ion conductor Sr3−3xNa3xSi3O9−1.5x (x = 0.45) (SNS) demonstrates full potential to be a practical solid electrolyte for intermediate temperature-solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). It exhibits the highest oxide-ion conductivity with the lowest activation energy among all the chemically stable solid oxide-ion conductors reported. The ionic conductivity is stable over a broad range of partial pressures of oxygen (10−30 to 1 atm) for an extended period of time. A SOFC based on a 294 μm thick SNS-electrolyte produces peak power densities …

A Novel Solid Oxide Redox Flow Battery For Grid Energy Storage, Nansheng Xu, Xue Li, Xuan Zhao, John B. Goodenough, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

In this work we report proof-of-concept of a novel redox flow battery consisting of a solid oxide electrochemical cell (SOEC) integrated with a redox-cycle unit. The charge/discharge characteristics were explicitly observed by operating between fuel cell and electrolysis modes of the SOEC along with “in-battery” generation and storage of H2 realized by an in situ closed-loop reversible steam-metal reaction in the redox-cycle unit. With Fe/FeO as the redox materials, the new storage battery can produce an energy capacity of 348 Wh/kg-Fe and round-trip efficiency of 91.5% over twenty stable charge/discharge cycles. This excellent performance combined with robustness, environmental friendliness …

Can Silver Be A Reliable Current Collector For Electrochemical Tests?, Yunhui Gong, Changyong Qin, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

The true functionality of a current collector employed in electrochemical cells is to ensure a low- resistance steady electrons flow between the cell and instrumentation without involving in any local electrochemical reactions of the electrode. In this study, we investigated the effect of curing temperature of a common current collector, silver, on the polarization area specific resistance (ASR) of a cathode. The results explicitly showed that at least one order of magnitude lower ASR for a cathode with Ag cured at 800°C than that cured at 650°C of the same cathode configuration. Microscopic analysis of the 800°C-cured cells revealed a …

Mixed Conductors For Electrochemical Co2 Separation, Nansheng Xu, Lingling Zhang, Hailei Zhao, Kevin Huang Feb 2015

Mixed Conductors For Electrochemical Co2 Separation, Nansheng Xu, Lingling Zhang, Hailei Zhao, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

One of the major concerns of consuming fossil fuels to produce useful form of energy is the emission of CO2, a greenhouse gas that can cause climate change and ultimately threaten the survival of humanity. Controlling CO2-emission is an urgent but the only practical solution to stabilize CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. In this paper, we report our effort to capture CO2 from a simulated flue gas by utilizing a dual-phase mixed electron and carbonate-ion conducting (MECC) membrane. The obtained CO2 flux density is the highest among the published dual-phase carbonate systems. These results demonstrate the Ag-MC dual-phase composite as …

Effective Ionic Conductivity Of A Novel Intermediate-Temperature Mixed Oxide-Ion And Carbonate-Ion Conductor, Xue Li, Guoliang Xiao, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

A systematic investigation on the effective ionic conductivity (σm) of a novel intermediate-temperature mixed oxide-ion and carbonate-ion conductor MOCC consisting of a ceria phase and a carbonate phase is reported. The study explicitly shows that the observed remarkable temperature-dependent σm is primarily the result of softening/melting of the carbonate phase as the physical state of the carbonate phase transforms from solid, softened to molten. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis complements the understanding of the observed electrical behavior by revealing temperatures of melting and solidification in agreement with the onset temperatures of σm. In addition, the measured σmagrees reasonably well with that …

Oxygen Permeation Through Cobalt-Containing Perovskites: Surface Oxygen Exchange Vs. Lattice Oxygen Diffusion, Kevin Huang, John B. Goodenough

Kevin Huang

The oxygen permeation fluxes from p′O2 to pnO2 (p′O2>pnO2) across cobalt-containing perovskite ceramic membranes La1−xSrxCoO3−δ and SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ were measured by gas chromatography as functions of oxygen chemical potential gradient, temperature, thickness, and catalytic activity on the surface. Power indexes 0.5>n>0 for uncatalyzed La1−xSrxCoO3−δ and 1>n>0.5 for SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ were obtained when JO2 vs. p′nO2p'′nO2 …
