Nondestructive material testing and diagnostics play an important role in reliability analysis, component wear-out testing, life-cycle estimates, and safety inspections. Of the several techniques available for nondestructive inspections, thermal analysis has been chosen to be the focus of this thesis research. An equivalence between the system of equations for the heat flow problem, and the variables of circuit theory suggests that an electrical model can be constructed to represent the actual thermal system. This electrical model is constructed based upon a finite difference discretization of the heat flow equation. Using these associations a basic one-dimensional electrical model has been constructed …

It is quite common in the industry to use various interface methods, such as welding, fasteners, bolts, adhesive bonding, etc., to join substructures together. The quality of the assembled structure is directly related to the type of the interface methods used in the manufacturing process. Thus, it is important to include the interface conditions as part of design variables in any design process. Pultruded composites are candidate materials for civil engineering infrastructural applications due their higher corrosion resistance and lower life cycle cost. Efficient use of materials like structural members requires thorough understanding of the mechanism that affects their response. The present investigation addresses the modeling and characterization of E-glass fiber/polyester resin matrix pultruded composites in the form of sheets of various thicknesses.

A coupled structural-electrical modal finite element formulation for composite panels with integrated piezoelectric sensors and actuators is presented for nonlinear panel flutter suppression under yawed supersonic flow. The first-order shear deformation theory for laminated composite plates, the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relations for large deflection response, the linear piezoelectricity constitutive relations, and the first-order piston theory of aerodynamics are employed. Nonlinear equations of motion are derived using the three-node triangular MIN3 plate element. Additional electrical degrees of freedom are introduced to model piezoelectric sensors and actuators. A numerical study is conducted to investigate radiative interactions in flows with thermal and chemical nonequilibrium. The two dimensional spatially elliptic Navier-Stokes equations have been used to numerically investigate different physical processes in the nozzle flow problem. The system of governing equations are solved using explicit, unsplit MacCormack predictor-corrector scheme. The chemistry source term is treated implicitly to alleviate stiffness associated with fast chemical reactions.
Different physical processes considered in this study are investigated in a systematic manner. Finite chemical processes in chemically reacting supersonic nozzle flows are studied. Five hydrogen-air combustion models have been employed to study the influence …
