High-Pressure Mechanochemistry: Conceptual Multiscale Theory And Interpretation Of Experiments, Valery I. Levitas Jan 2004

High-Pressure Mechanochemistry: Conceptual Multiscale Theory And Interpretation Of Experiments, Valery I. Levitas

Valery I. Levitas

Fifteen mechanochemical phenomena observed under compression and plastic shear of materials in a rotational diamond anvil cell (RDAC) are systematized. They are related to strain-induced structural changes (SCs) under high pressure, including phase transformations (PTs) and chemical reactions. A simple, three-scale continuum thermodynamic theory and closed-form solutions are developed which explain these phenomena. At the nanoscale, a model for strain-induced nucleation at the tip of a dislocation pile-up is suggested and studied. At the microscale, a simple strain-controlled kinetic equation for the strain-induced SCs is thermodynamically derived. A macroscale model for plastic flow and strain-induced SCs in RDAC is developed. …

Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia, William Culbreth Jan 2004

Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia, William Culbreth

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

One of the key technologies for the deployment of acceleratordriven transmutation systems is the accelerator itself. Elliptical superconducting niobium cavities are used to increase the efficiency of the high-power accelerators needed to support the transmutation mission.

One of the major sources of energy loss from a superconducting accelerator cavity is a process known as multiple impacting (or “multipacting”) of electrons. This phenomenon limits the maximum amount of energy and power that the niobium cavity can store. As a result, the maximum power available for accelerating the desired charge, as well as the overall performance of the accelerator is reduced. Furthermore, …

Developing A Sensing System For The Measurement Of Oxygen Concentration In Liquid Pb-Bi Eutectic, Yingtao Jiang, Bingmei Fu, Woosoon Yim Jan 2004

Developing A Sensing System For The Measurement Of Oxygen Concentration In Liquid Pb-Bi Eutectic, Yingtao Jiang, Bingmei Fu, Woosoon Yim

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a candidate as a spallation target in sub-critical transmutation systems and as a coolant in nuclear programs. One of the primary concerns with LBE systems is the corrosion of stainless steel, the primary structural material used in nuclear systems. To mitigate this problem, trace levels of oxygen can be introduced into the system, causing the formation of a protective oxide layer at the interface between the LBE and steel. To protect the steel components, this oxide layer must be properly maintained. However, too much oxygen will produce unwanted oxide precipitation within the coolant and elsewhere in …

Investigation Of Four-Wheel Steering Algorithms For A Formula Sae Car, Colm O'Kane, Sean Timoney Jan 2004

Investigation Of Four-Wheel Steering Algorithms For A Formula Sae Car, Colm O'Kane, Sean Timoney

Conference Papers

An algorithm was developed for a speed-dependent four-wheel steering system for a Formula SAE car. A linear bicycle model was implemented using the MATLAB and SIMULINK software packages. Various control laws were investigated for the rear steer angle with the objective of reducing the sideslip angle. A full 3D model of the vehicle incorporating weight transfer and tire non-linearity was then developed using the DADS software. An algorithm developed using the linear model with the aim of reducing vehicle sideslip angle was implemented in the nonlinear model. It is shown that this algorithm can improve the dynamic performance for both …

The Effect Of Loading On Disturbance Sounds Of The Atlantic Croaker Micropogonius Undulatus: Air Versus Water, Michael L. Fine, Justin Schrinel, Timothy M. Cameron Jan 2004

The Effect Of Loading On Disturbance Sounds Of The Atlantic Croaker Micropogonius Undulatus: Air Versus Water, Michael L. Fine, Justin Schrinel, Timothy M. Cameron

Biology Publications

Physiological work on fish sound production may require exposure of the swimbladder to air, which will change its loading (radiation mass and resistance) and could affect parameters of emitted sounds. This issue was examined in Atlantic croaker Micropogonius chromis by recording sounds from the same individuals in air and water. Although sonograms appear relatively similar in both cases, pulse duration is longer because of decreased damping, and sharpness of tuning (Q factor) is higher in water. However, pulse repetition rate and dominant frequency are unaffected. With appropriate caution it is suggested that sounds recorded in air can provide a useful …

The Frequency Distribution Of Quantization Error In Digitizers For Coherent Sampling, Sol Neeman Ph.D. Jan 2004

The Frequency Distribution Of Quantization Error In Digitizers For Coherent Sampling, Sol Neeman Ph.D.

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In this paper the frequency distribution of quantization error in coherent sampling of digitizers will be investigated. As the distribution of the quantization error affects the values of THD and SNR, it is relevant for a correct interpretation of THD and SNR of sine waves in coherent sampling. The distribution of the quantization error will be analyzed as a function of N, total number of samples and M, number of cycles in the sample set and it will be proved that for certain cases, the quantization error falls on odd harmonics only of the frequency of the sampled sine wave.

The Open Assembly Model For The Exchange Of Assembly And Tolerance Information: Overview And Example, M. M. Baysal, U. Roy, R. Sudarsan, R. D. Sriram, K. W. Lyons

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship

In early design phases an effective information exchange among CAD (Computer Aided Design) tools depends on a standardized representation for the product data in all PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools. The NIST Core Product Model (CPM) and its extension are proposed to provide the required base-level product model that is open, non-proprietary, generic, extensible, independent of any one product development process and capable of capturing the full engineering context commonly shared in product development [1]. The Open Assembly Model (OAM) Model extends CPM to provide a standard representation and exchange protocol for assembly. The assembly information model emphasizes the nature …

Microscale Investigation Of Thermo-Fluid Transport In The Transition Fil, Region Of An Evaporating Capillary Meniscus Using A Microgravity Environment, Kenneth D. Kihm, Jeffrey S. Allen, Kevin P. Hallinan, David M. Pratt

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In order to enhance the fundamental understanding of thin film evaporation and thereby improve the critical design concept for two-phase heat transfer devices, microscale heat and mass transport is to be investigated for the transition film region using state-of-the-art optical diagnostic techniques. By utilizing a microgravity environment, the length scales of the transition film region can be extended sufficiently, from submicron to micron, to probe and measure the microscale transport fields which are affected by intermolecular forces. Extension of the thin film dimensions under microgravity will be achieved by using a conical evaporator made of a thin silicon substrate under …

Understanding Manufacturing Energy Use Through Statistical Analysis, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak Jan 2004

Understanding Manufacturing Energy Use Through Statistical Analysis, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Energy in manufacturing facilities is used for direct production of goods, space conditioning, and general facility support such as lighting. This paper presents a methodology for statistically analyzing plant energy use in terms of these major end uses. The methodology uses as few as 60 data points that are relatively easy for most plants to obtain. Multivariable change-point models of electricity and natural gas use as functions of outdoor air temperature and production data are then developed. The statistical models can be used to predict energy use for energy budgeting, measure savings, determine cost structures, and diagnostic purposes. Moreover, in …

Cfd Analysis Of Unsteady Separated Transonic Oscillation Cascade Aerodynamics, Xuedong Zhou, J. Mitch Wolff

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

With an improved algebraic mesh-deforming algorithm, STAR-CD, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver is employed for the numerical analysis of a transonic oscillating linear cascade of advanced design blades. The center blade oscillates 0.6-degrees about the middle cord. The numerical simulation is conducted for a frequency range from 200 Hz to 500 Hz. A hybrid grid, which utilizes a structured O-grid around the airfoil and an unstructured grid everywhere else is employed. The Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), one equation turbulence model, along with other two equation k-ε models, are also utilized for the steady state simulation. The S-A turbulence …

Inverse Boundary Element/Genetic Algorithm Method For Reconstruction O, Mahmood Silieti Jan 2004

Inverse Boundary Element/Genetic Algorithm Method For Reconstruction O, Mahmood Silieti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A methodology is formulated for the solution of the inverse problem concerned with the reconstruction of multi-dimensional heat fluxes for film cooling applications. The motivation for this study is the characterization of complex thermal conditions in industrial applications such as those encountered in film cooled turbomachinery components. The heat conduction problem in the metal endwall/shroud is solved using the boundary element method (bem), and the inverse problem is solved using a genetic algorithm (ga). Thermal conditions are overspecified at exposed surfaces amenable to measurement, while the temperature and surface heat flux distributions are unknown at the film cooling hole/slot walls. …

Planetary Cliff Descent Using Cooperative Robots, Erik Mumm, Shane Farritor, Paola Pirjanian, Chris Leger, Paul Schenker Jan 2004

Planetary Cliff Descent Using Cooperative Robots, Erik Mumm, Shane Farritor, Paola Pirjanian, Chris Leger, Paul Schenker

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Future robotic planetary exploration will need to traverse geographically diverse and challenging terrain. Cliffs, ravines, and fissures are of great scientific interest because they may contain important data regarding past water flow and past life.
Highly sloped terrain is difficult and often impossible to safely navigate using a single robot. This paper describes a control system for a team of three robots that access cliff walls at inclines up to 70°. Two robot assistants, or anchors, lower a third robot, called the rappeller, down the cliff using tethers. The anchors use actively controlled winches to first assist the rappeller in …

Analysis Of Jet-Wing Distributed Propulsion From Thick Wing Trailing Edges, Serhat Hosder, Joseph A. Schetz, Vance Dippold Jan 2004

Analysis Of Jet-Wing Distributed Propulsion From Thick Wing Trailing Edges, Serhat Hosder, Joseph A. Schetz, Vance Dippold

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional airliners use two to four engines in a Cayley-type arrangement to provide thrust, and the thrust is concentrated right behind the engine. Distributed propulsion is the idea of redistributing the thrust across most, or all, of the wingspan of an aircraft. This can be accomplished by using several large engines and using a duct to spread out the exhaust flow to form a jet-wing or by using many small engines spaced along the span of the wing. Jet-wing distributed propulsion was originally suggested as a way to improve propulsive efficiency. A previous study at Virginia Tech assessed the potential …

Laser Welding Control, Y.-S. Huang, Hai-Lung Tsai, P. Turner, P.-C. Wang Jan 2004

Laser Welding Control, Y.-S. Huang, Hai-Lung Tsai, P. Turner, P.-C. Wang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In laser welding of metallic workpieces, the energetic beam is moved over the workpiece surface to form a pool of molten weld metal that quickly solidifies behind the advance of the laser into a weld nugget. The laser beam produces a keyhole of plasma-containing vapor within the molten pool. Weld nugget porosity, due to entrapment of the vapor, is minimized by continually sensing radiation from the molten metal pool to determine pool depth and width and then controlling laser power and speed to continually produce a weld metal pool wide enough for the liquid to fully expel the vapor and …

Estimating Energy Savings In Compressed Air Systems, Chris Schmidt, J. Kelly Kissock Jan 2004

Estimating Energy Savings In Compressed Air Systems, Chris Schmidt, J. Kelly Kissock

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Compressed air is typically one of the most expensive utilities in an industrial facility. As a result, potential savings opportunities are aggressively sought out and identified. Once identified, projected energy savings must be calculated in order to justify the cost of implementing the savings opportunity. It is important to calculate projected energy and cost savings as accurately as possible. Unfortunately, savings are frequently overestimated because the methods used to estimate savings neglect to consider important factors such as compressor control and type, storage, and multiple compressor operation.

In this paper, a methodology is presented for modeling air compressor performance and …
