One of the primary causes of rail rolling stock derailments is attributed to bearing and wheel axle failures. The health of train bearings is primarily monitored at target locations through wayside detection systems. This practice is susceptible to bearing failure and potential derailments at points in between these wayside systems. To remedy this, the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) has developed a wireless onboard monitoring system that can continuously monitor the vibration response, which directly correlates to the health of bearings. Soft vibrational robots are robots that incorporate compliant structures into their design and are driven by oscillating actuators. A recent, popular version of a soft vibrational robot is the bristle bot, which uses flexible bristles and a vibration motor to propel itself across surfaces and through pipes. This motion is primarily driven by stick-slip dynamics resulting from asymmetric frictional forces applied at the bristle tips. Building codes exist to control and mitigate such noise, but these codes are outdated and fail to protect the residents against noise annoyance. The focus of this study was to select triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures made of 3D-printed polymers. The primary variables in this study were: TPMS shape, lattice volume ratio, and lattice material. Vibration absorption was characterized by damping ratio via transmissibility at the system’s natural frequency. The vibration testing was performed using an electro-dynamic shaker, a known mass, an input/control accelerometer, and an output/response accelerometer. Polymer concrete is a composite material used to replace cast iron and steel in wafer grinding machines for vibration damping. During the grinding and lapping processes of manufacturing silicon wafers, excessive vibrations may cause subsurface damage which requires additional polishing and reduces yield. Nine compositions containing various levels of granulated rubber and glass fibers were manufactured. CRM WRF-10 granulated rubber was examined at 0%, 5%, and 10% and Corning Cem-Fil glass fibers were added at 0%, 0.5%, and 1% by weight. Mountain bike suspensions systems are set up and tuned based only on qualitative, ‘feeling’-based metrics. The MTB DAQ, sponsored by Dr. Joseph Mello with the Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering Department, is a data acquisition system we developed to improve suspension tuning with a data-driven approach. The system mounts to a bicycle frame and has sensors that measure vibration and travel speed to characterize the bike’s motion. Many industries have begun shifting into the Internet of Things (IoT) in the 21st century. To help ease this transition for the rail industry, The University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) has partnered with Hum Industrial Technology, Inc. (HUM) to help complete the development of a Wireless Onboard Condition Monitoring system named the ‘Boomerang™’. This product allows customers to schedule proactive maintenance on their railcars to replace defective wheels and/or bearings, saving them time, money and potentially preventing costly catastrophic derailments. The UTCRS research team has established thresholds to determine defective bearings utilizing thermal and mechanical sensors.

The effect of wall proximity on the mechanism of flow-induced vibration of a circular cylinder mounted in a wind tunnel and free to vibrate with two degrees-of-freedom near a rigid plane boundary were examined at a Reynolds number of 1.86 x 105. Hot-wire anemometry and cylinder-mounted accelerometers were used to characterize the flow-induced vibration of the cylinder. In the near wall region (gap ratios, G/D< 0.4) the system was found to exhibit symptoms of movement-induced vibration resulting from the push-and-draw effect of the cylinder pushing into and out of the fluid immediately upstream and downstream of the cylinder. The variation of the width of the separated wake region with the cylinder motion produces a force in phase with the cylinder velocity, resulting in excitation of the cylinder motion. For G/D > 1.0, the alternate shedding of vortices (the Kármán vortex street) produces a fluctuating lift on the body. This study proposes a method to enhance the anti-icing capabilities of superhydrophobic surfaces by utilizing vibration to further reduce contact time of an impacting droplet in addition to keeping the droplet in the Cassie-Baxter regime, where surface adhesion is lower than the opposing Wenzel regime. We tested this with two methods: by investigating the effects of vibration normal to the plane of a superhydrophobic surface being impacted by water droplets in a room temperature environment, with the surface horizontal in a room temperature environment and tiled in a subzero degree environment. In this work, the ability to use high frequency mechanical excitation to generate significant heating within plastic bonded explosives, as well as single energetic particles embedded within a viscoelastic binder, is studied. In this work, the fundamental mechanisms associated with the conversion of high-frequency mechanical excitation to heat as applied to these composite energetic systems are thoroughly investigated.

Of the three main rail accident types in the United States, derailments are the most common. Studies have shown that derailments occurring above 25 mph are caused by equipment failures such as bearing failures. As a preventative measure, condition-monitoring systems are required to detect defective bearings in the field. Some mechanical systems with gaps such as in disc brakes and Cardan joints exhibit nonlinearity under certain load conditions, which is unpredictable and highly sensitive to initial conditions. Previous studies were mainly focused on either a single-degree-of-freedom (DOF) system or a flexible beam with uniform elastic foundation.
