Mechanisms Governing Fatigue, Damage, And Fracture Of Commercially Pure Titanium For Viable Aerospace Applications, Udaykar Bathini, Tirumalai Srivatsan, Anil Patnaik, Craig Menzemer

Craig Menzemer

In this paper, the cyclic stress amplitude controlled high-cycle fatigue properties and final fracture behavior of commercially pure titanium (Grade 2) are presented and discussed. The material characterization was developed and put forth for selection and use in a spectrum of applications spanning the industries of aerospace, defense, chemical, marine, and commercial products. Test specimens were prepared from the as-received plate stock of the material with the stress axis both parallel (longitudinal) and perpendicular (transverse) to the rolling direction of the plate. The test specimens were cyclically deformed at a constant load ratio of 0.1, at different values of maximum …

In this paper, the influence of test specimen orientation and microstructure on cyclic stress-amplitude controlled fatigue response, damage initiation, damage propagation and fracture behavior of samples taken from a welded plate of titanium alloy is presented and discussed. Test specimens from the chosen alloy were prepared from an as-welded plate of the material with the stress axis both parallel (longitudinal) and perpendicular (transverse) to the deformed (rolling) direction of the plate. The test specimens were cyclically deformed at different values of maximum stress at a constant load ratio of 0.1, and the resultant cycles-to-failure was recorded. The fracture surfaces of …

Deformation-Induced Martensite And Nanotwins By Cryogenic Laser Shock Peening Of Aisi 304 Stainless Steel And The Effects On Mechanical Properties, Chang Ye, Sergey Suslov, Dong Lin, Gary Cheng Apr 2015

Deformation-Induced Martensite And Nanotwins By Cryogenic Laser Shock Peening Of Aisi 304 Stainless Steel And The Effects On Mechanical Properties, Chang Ye, Sergey Suslov, Dong Lin, Gary Cheng

Dr. Chang Ye

Laser shock peening (LSP) of stainless steel 304 was carried out at room and cryogenic temperature (liquid nitrogen temperature). It was found that the deformation-induced martensite was generated by LSP only when the laser-generated plasma pressure is sufficiently high. Compared to room temperature laser shock peening (RT-LSP), cryogenic laser shock peening (CLSP) generates a higher volume fraction of martensite at the same laser intensity. This is due to the increase in the density of potential embryos (deformation bands) for martensite nucleation by deformation at cryogenic temperature. In addition, CLSP generates a high density of deformation twins and stacking faults. After …

The Effect Of Structural Distortion On The Fatigue Life Of Large-Diameter Ball Bearing, Jerzy Sawicki, Samuel Johansson, John Rumbarger, Ronald Sharpless Nov 2012

The Effect Of Structural Distortion On The Fatigue Life Of Large-Diameter Ball Bearing, Jerzy Sawicki, Samuel Johansson, John Rumbarger, Ronald Sharpless

Jerzy T. Sawicki

Large-diameter special configuration ball bearings feature narrow raceways with low structural stiffness. They are susceptible to local distortions caused by the surrounding structures, which are often subjected to heavy loading. This presents a difficulty in the design process which relies mainly on defining the individual rolling-element loads within the bearing under the assumption of rigid circular and flat supporting structures. Therefore, the application of large-diameter ball and roller bearing rings as the critical components in rotating machines becomes more of a design task than making a catalog selection. This paper will demonstrate how the finite element analysis can be utilized …
