MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) micromirror devices can be used to control the phase of a propagating light wavefront, and in particular to correct aberrations that may be present in the wavefront, due to either atmospheric turbulence or any other type of fixed or time and space varying aberrations. In order to shorten the design cycle of MEMS micromirror devices, computer software is developed to create, from MEMS micromirror device design data, a numerical model of the MEMS device. The model is then used to compute the far field diffraction pattern of a wavefront reflected from the device, and to predict the …

The use of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in the design of an artificial cochlea is investigated in depth. Interdigitated finger (comb), cantilever, bridge, and mirror resonators are presented as possible devices used to implement the artificial cochlea. These resonators are demonstrated to be extremely high Q devices, capable of being tuned with a simple DC bias. This suggests a possible change to existing cochlea models that claim highly complex AC feedback as being responsible for changes in the damping of the basilar membrane. This research conducted the first demonstrated use of a micro-electro-mechanical structure (MEMS) mirror array to correct a static optical aberration. A well-developed technique in adaptive optics imaging systems uses a deformable mirror to reflect the incident wave front to the imaging stage of the system. By matching the surface of the deformable mirror to the shape of the wave front phase distortion, the reflected wave front will be less aberrated before it is imaged. Typical adaptive optics systems use piezo-electric actuated deformable mirrors. A comprehensive conjunctive-use management model is developed. The dynamics of flow and solute transport processes in connected surface water groundwater systems are integrated by a dual programming management model. The governing aquifer flow parameters and streamflows are treated as stochastic random processes. Multiple realizations of the random field are generated and are explicitly incorporated in a non-linear optimization model along with other system, environmental, and management constraints. To facilitate management of large aquifer systems, a linked simulation-optimization approach is used. The simulation program generates the response matrices for flow and transport processes. The viscous plane flow of an electrically conducting fluid towards an infinite wall is solved in the presence of a magnetic field which is aligned with the flow far from the wall. The problem has two dimensionless parameters-- ε, the magnetic Prandtl number, and β, the square of the ratio of Alfven velocity to fluid velocity far from the wall. The problem has a similarity solution which reduces the governing equations to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations which can be solved numerically. A set of numerical models is developed for simulating the four stages of barrier breaching characterized by one horizontal spatial dimension.

The SBEACH model is employed for the first stage of dune/beach erosion. The Lax-Wendroff two-step explicit scheme for Stage II is developed to simulate initiation of ocean flood propagation on initially dry barrier islands and the method of characteristics (MOC), is employed to compute additional boundary data. A point vortex located above and convected parallel to a wall is an important model of the process by which a boundary layer becomes unstable due to external disturbances. Often it has been assumed that the boundary layer due to the passage of the vortex is inherently unsteady. Here we show that for a vortex convected by a uniform shear flow, there is a steady solution when the speed of the vortex c_v is sufficiently fast. The existence of the steady solution is demonstrated analytically in the limit of large vortex velocity (c_v→∞) and numerically …

Gaseous fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) across the air-water interface of Southern Chesapeake Bay were calculated for the period January 1994 through May 1995 using a modified two-film model. Additionally, the distributions of PAHs between the vapor and aerosol phase in the atmosphere, and between the freely dissolved and suspended particulate phase in the water column were investigated. Net instantaneous gaseous fluxes of PAHs were determined to vary in direction and magnitude both spatially and temporally across the air-water interface of Southern Chesapeake Bay at four sites ranging from remote to urban and highly industrialized.
