Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Cfd Simulation Of High-Speed Boundary Layers, Michael Tullis May 2023

Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Cfd Simulation Of High-Speed Boundary Layers, Michael Tullis

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper presents an investigation of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of boundary layer flow and heat transfer in high Mach number flows. This study evaluates an industry standard RANS turbulence model (k-omega SST) and a recently proposed modification to that model (Danis and Durbin [1]), and quantifies the accuracy for predicting high Mach number boundary layer flow. The test cases were previously documented by Duan et al. (2018), who used direct numerical simulation (DNS) to calculate boundary layer flow of an ideal gas over a flat plate at freestream Mach numbers ranging …

Ternary Flow Simulation Based On The Conservative Phase Field Lattice Boltzmann Method, Chunheng Zhao Jan 2022

Ternary Flow Simulation Based On The Conservative Phase Field Lattice Boltzmann Method, Chunheng Zhao

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, we numerically investigated multi-phase fluid dynamics (2 and 3-phase flow) by solving the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the conservative phase field (CPF) equations using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). To effectively simulate the large-scale multi-phase physics, we developed an open-source software, IMEXLBM, which can be easily parallelized on both CPUs and GPUs without significant modifications to the code. We first validated various parts of this software and then used this method to study the interaction of rising bubbles with a static oil droplet as well as the engulfment of the water droplet on solids coated with a …

Numerical Study On Oscillating Flow Over A Flat Plate Using Pseudo-Compressibility In Intermittent Turbulent Regime, Shivank Srivastava Mr.

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) in-house code is developed to study unsteady characteristics of incompressible oscillating boundary layer flow over a flat plate under laminar and intermittently turbulent condition using pseudo-compressible unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) model. In the in-house code, the two-dimensional, unsteady conservation of mass and momentum equations are discretized using finite difference techniques which employs second order accurate (based on Taylor series) central differencing for spatial derivatives and second order Runge-Kutta accurate differencing for temporal derivatives. The in-house code employs Fully Explicit-Finite Difference technique (FEFD) to solve the governing differential equations of the mathematical model. In …

Improvement Of Labyrinth Seal Leakage Rates Using Additive Manufacturing, Austin L. Gasbarra Dec 2020

Improvement Of Labyrinth Seal Leakage Rates Using Additive Manufacturing, Austin L. Gasbarra

Master's Theses

The growing popularity of additive manufacturing in commercial applications has al- lowed for new ideas and new ways of thinking when designing components. Further optimization at the component level is possible, though powder metallurgy is in its infancy. This study explores the possibility of using additive manufacturing to develop better labyrinth seals in turbomachinery. Labyrinth seals have a torturous fluid path with high losses, thus limiting the amount of fluid leakage. These types of seals can be non-rotating, allowing them to better take advantage of the additive manufacturing process due to the absence of rotating stresses. Labyrinth seal performance is …

A Numerical And Experimental Study On Effect Of Composition Of Ar-N2 Shielding Gas On The Weld Bead Profile And Its Prediction For Hot Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Niraj Pudasaini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wire arc additive manufacturing is a process of making three-dimensional metal parts in a layer-by-layer approach using a feed wire and electric arc as a heat source. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is becoming more popular due to its ability to create complex 3D parts, less build time, high deposition rate, and significant cost savings. Out of the many parameters used in WAAM, one of the important parameters is shielding gas which plays a significant role in material quality, properties, and defects. In this study, a controlled amount of Argon (Ar) and Nitrogen (N2) shielding gases are used …

Toward A Fast And Accurate Modeling Strategy For Thermal Management In Air-Cooled Data Centers, Long Tran Bao Phan

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become a popular tool compared to experimental measurement for thermal management in data centers. However, it is very time-consuming and resource-intensive when used to model large-scale data centers, and may not be ready for real-time thermal monitoring. In this thesis, the two main goals are first to develop rapid flow simulation to reduce the computing time while maintaining good accuracy, and second, to develop a whole building energy simulation (BES) strategy for data center modeling. To achieve this end, hybrid modeling and model training methodologies are investigated for rapid flow simulation, and a multi-zone model …

Transient Flow Analysis Of A Closing Blowout Preventer Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd), Daniel Barreca Jun 2019

Transient Flow Analysis Of A Closing Blowout Preventer Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd), Daniel Barreca

LSU Master's Theses

Reliability of blowout preventers (BOPs) is crucial for drilling and production operations. Erosion of BOP components and hydrodynamic forces on rams may cause failure of BOP elements to seal the well. Transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of fluids within the wellbore and BOP offer quantitative and qualitative data related to this reliability during the closure of various BOP components. Since limited research has been published in transient CFD simulations of closing BOPs, this thesis discusses challenges and solutions to simulating closing blowout preventers. Single component fluids are simulated through several BOP geometries such as annular preventers, pipe rams, and …

Numerical Simulation For The Hydrodynamic Performance Of Hydropower Turbine Near Free Surface, Zeda Yin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The performance of hydropower turbine in shallow water can be affected by the presence of free surface. Therefore, it is of great interest to investigate the influence of free surface on hydropower turbine performance through computational simulations. For a better understanding of flow field around hydropower turbine operating in shallow water, it is important to analyze the flow over a single hydrofoil beneath free surface first. Therefore, as the first part of this thesis, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology was used for numerical simulation of 2D unsteady incompressible viscous flow over a hydrofoil under the free surface. The computation …

Computational Exploration Of Flash-Boiling Internal Flow And Near-Nozzle Spray, Sampath K. Rachakonda Oct 2018

Computational Exploration Of Flash-Boiling Internal Flow And Near-Nozzle Spray, Sampath K. Rachakonda

Doctoral Dissertations

Gasoline engines operating under the principle of direct injection are susceptible to flash-boiling due to superheated nature of the fuel and the sub-atmospheric in-cylinder pressures during injection. A review of the literature on flash-boiling sprays shows that a majority of the studies have focused on the far-field regions of the spray, with limited attention given to understanding the influences of the injector geometry and the near-nozzle regions of the spray. Modeling the internal nozzle flow and the primary atomization, on which the far-field spray depends, is a challenge. This thesis, therefore, is aimed at understanding the complex flow through a …

Liquid Jet Penetration And Breakup In A Free Supersonic Gas Jet, Hansen Jones Oct 2018

Liquid Jet Penetration And Breakup In A Free Supersonic Gas Jet, Hansen Jones

LSU Master's Theses

In the testing of today’s rocket engines, both on large scale vertical test stands and smaller subscale horizontal component testing stands, it is extremely important to be able to accurately quantify and mitigate the thermal and acoustic loads the engines will generate on test stand infrastructure. Due to the large number of parameters that must be considered for many cases, development of a multi-phase computational code is under way to properly analyze and design water spray cooling systems used at NASA’s Stennis Space Center (SSC) and across other NASA centers. As such, a small-scale experiment has been conducted at Louisiana …

Eulerian Cfd Modeling Of Multiphase Internal Injector Flow And External Sprays, Eli T. Baldwin Nov 2016

Eulerian Cfd Modeling Of Multiphase Internal Injector Flow And External Sprays, Eli T. Baldwin

Doctoral Dissertations

The improvement of combustion systems which use sprays to atomize liquid fuel requires an understanding of that atomization process. Although the secondary break up mechanisms for the far-field of an atomizing spray have been thoroughly studied and well understood for some time, understanding the internal nozzle flow and primary atomization on which the far-field spray depends has proven to be more of a challenge. Flow through fuel injector nozzles can be highly complex and heavily influenced by factors such as turbulence, needle motion, nozzle imperfections, nozzle asymmetry, and phase change. All of this occurs within metallic injectors, making experimental characterization …

Evaluation Of The Mass Transfer Effect Of The Stalk Contraction-Relaxation Cycle Of Vorticella Convallaria, Jiazhong Zhou Dec 2014

Evaluation Of The Mass Transfer Effect Of The Stalk Contraction-Relaxation Cycle Of Vorticella Convallaria, Jiazhong Zhou

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Vorticella convallaria is a genus of protozoa living in fresh water. It has a bell-shaped zooid equipped with adoral ciliary bands and a contractile stalk tethering the zooid to a substrate. Vorticella is regarded as a biological spring because its contractile stalk can pull the zooid towards the substrate at a remarkably high speed and then relaxes to its extended state much more slowly. However, reasons for Vorticella’s stalk contraction are still unknown. It is presumed that the flow field induced by the contraction-relaxation cycle of Vorticella would augment mass transfer effect near the substrate. We investigated this hypothesis …

Numerical Modelling Of Species Exchange In A 3d Porous Medium: Modelling Exchange Within The Human Lung, Chelsea E. Johnson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The volume-averaged oxygen transport equation is closed using a volume-averaged form of Fick’s law of diffusion between the air and tissue to simulate species exchange within the lungs’ alveoli using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) 3D conjugate domain model. Pore level simulations of a terminal alveolated duct are used to determine that the transport of inhaled oxygen from the cluster inlet to the alveolar walls is diffusion dominated. The resistance to oxygen diffusion into the tissue is found to be a function of the tidal volume and tissue transport properties, with a maximum respiration frequency at which the full amount …
