A Building Energy Efficiency Optimization Method By Evaluating The Effective Thermal Zones Occupancy, Anna Laura Pisello, Michael Bobker, Franco Cotana Dec 2012

A Building Energy Efficiency Optimization Method By Evaluating The Effective Thermal Zones Occupancy, Anna Laura Pisello, Michael Bobker, Franco Cotana

Publications and Research

Building energy efficiency is strongly linked to the operations and control systems, together with the integrated performance of passive and active systems. In new high quality buildings in particular, where these two latter aspects have been already implemented at the design stage, users’ perspective, obtained through post-occupancy assessment, has to be considered to reduce whole energy requirement during service life. This research presents an innovative and low-cost methodology to reduce buildings’ energy requirements through post-occupancy assessment and optimization of energy operations using effective users’ attitudes and requirements as feedback. As a meaningful example, the proposed method is applied to a …

Comparison Of Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Capacities Of Traditional Sorghum Beers With Other Alcoholic Beverages, Fatouma Abdoul-Latif, Romaric G. Bayili, Louis C. Obame, Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof.

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

Thirty samples of sorghum beers “dolo” were selected from traditionally fermented household manufacturers from Burkina Faso. Dolo samples were screened for their total phenolic content, proanthocyanidins and putative antioxidant capacities, and were compared with industrial beers and wines. Total phenols were measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Proanthocyanidins content were determined by the method of HCl-butanol hydrolysis. Antioxidant activities were evaluated both with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and by the trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) using 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical) (ABTS•+). The average contents of total phenols and proanthocyanidins were 506 μg GAE/ml of dolo and 45 μg APE/ml of dolo, respectively. An …

Improved Non-Linear Solution Of Dip Coating Flow, Omar Bin Yusuf Aug 2012

Improved Non-Linear Solution Of Dip Coating Flow, Omar Bin Yusuf

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A thin layer of film is developed on the surface of a substrate in the dip coating process where the substrate is initially immersed into the coating fluid and then withdrawn continuously from the coating fluid bath. In this study a two dimensional flow of the thin film for a Newtonian fluid is examined theoretically by dividing the film into three separate regions. A general formulation is developed for a thin film flow, which then simplifies for each region upon considering appropriate assumptions to each region. The influence of inertia and surface tension in the presence of gravity is investigated …

The Effect Of Streamwise Vortices On The Frost Growth Rate In Developing Laminar Channel Flows, Brian Storey, Anthony Jacobi Jul 2012

The Effect Of Streamwise Vortices On The Frost Growth Rate In Developing Laminar Channel Flows, Brian Storey, Anthony Jacobi

Brian Storey

An experimental study is presented to assess the influence of streamwise vortices on frost growth in a steady, developing, laminar channel flow. Using a simple model and scale analysis, frost growth rate (ablimation) data are normalized with respect to temperature, humidity and time. Measurements from baseline experiments in a rectangular channel are found to be accurately correlated using the proposed scaling relation. Upon introducing streamwise vortices in the channel flow, frost growth still follows the scaling relation, but local growth rates were observed to increase by more than 7% in regions where the streamwise vortices induce a surface-normal flow toward …

The antibacterial assays in this study were performed by using inhibition zone diameters, MIC, MBC methods, the time-kill assay and the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (FICI) determination. On the whole, fifteen Gram-positive bacterial strains (MRSA/ARSA) were used. Negative control …

Development And Validation Of A Model For Granular Material Volume Measurements, Pourya Fasounaki Jun 2012

Development And Validation Of A Model For Granular Material Volume Measurements, Pourya Fasounaki

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Keeping inventory record of packed grains in silos poses challenges since the bulk material’s different segments do not discharge uniformly, leading to formation of random peaks and valleys on the surface. To facilitate obtaining accurate volume measurement of the grains by taking into account this non-linear behavior on the surface, laser or plumb-bob level-sensing devices are employed at different part of the surface to probe the level of material under those regions.

The main goals of this research is to study the behavior of granular material in silo while discharging downward and by doing so, differentiate certain flow patterns formed …

Study Of Grinding Burn Using Design Of Experiments Approach And Advanced Kaizen Methodology, Kiruthika Devi Sundarrajan May 2012

Study Of Grinding Burn Using Design Of Experiments Approach And Advanced Kaizen Methodology, Kiruthika Devi Sundarrajan

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Grinding burn has been one of the re-occurring issues at a leading automotive manufacturer. Historically when grinding burn occurred, trial and error was used to delicately find a set up process settings that provided good-enough-to-get-by results, but not optimal. Some changes include changing the coolant manifold to improve the coolant flow and rate, changing the grinding wheel, changing the type of coolant. The experiments have proved to introduce some improvements, however the occurrence of grinding burns have not been reduced or quantified and the cause of the grinding burn has not been identified or quantified. Grinding is a complex phenomenon …

Improving Health Care Quality And Safety: The Development And Assessment Of Laparoscopic Surgery Instrumentation, Practices And Procedures, Bernadette Mccrory

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Adverse events due to medical errors are a leading cause of death in the United States exceeding the mortality rates of motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer and AIDS. Improvements can and should be made to reduce the rates of preventable surgical errors since they account for nearly half of all adverse events within hospitals. Although minimally invasive surgery has proven patient benefits such as reduced postoperative pain and hospital stay, its operative environment imposes substantial physical and cognitive strain on the surgeon increasing the risk of error. In order to mitigate errors and protect patients, a multidisciplinary approach was taken …

Rules And Limitations Of Building Delay-Tolerant Topologies For Coupled Systems, Rifat Sipahi, Wei Qiao Apr 2012

Rules And Limitations Of Building Delay-Tolerant Topologies For Coupled Systems, Rifat Sipahi, Wei Qiao

Rifat Sipahi

This paper investigates the equilibrium behavior of broadly studied synchronization dynamics of coupled systems, among which shared information is delayed. The underlying relationship is established between graph structures and the largest amount of delay the dynamics can withstand without losing stability. In particular, based on Cartesian product of graphs, we present the rules and limitations for synthesizing the graphs of large-scale systems that can remain stable for as large delays as possible. Examples are provided to demonstrate the results.

A Nano-Cheese-Cutter To Directly Measure Interfacial Adhesion Of Freestanding Nano-Fibers, Xin Wang, Johnny F. Najem, Shing-Chung Wong, Kai-Tak Wan Apr 2012

A Nano-Cheese-Cutter To Directly Measure Interfacial Adhesion Of Freestanding Nano-Fibers, Xin Wang, Johnny F. Najem, Shing-Chung Wong, Kai-Tak Wan

Kai-tak Wan

A nano-cheese-cutter is fabricated to directly measure the adhesion between two freestanding nano-fibers. A single electrospun fiber is attached to the free end of an atomic force microscope cantilever, while a similar fiber is similarly prepared on a mica substrate in an orthogonal direction. External load is applied to deform the two fibers into complementary V-shapes, and the force measurement allows the elastic modulus to be determined. At a critical tensile load, “pull-off” occurs when the adhering fibers spontaneously detach from each other, yielding the interfacial adhesion energy. Loading-unloading cycles are performed to investigate repeated adhesion-detachment and surface degradation.

Greedy Algorithm For Disassembly Line Scheduling, Seamus M. Mcgovern, Surendra M. Gupta Apr 2012

Greedy Algorithm For Disassembly Line Scheduling, Seamus M. Mcgovern, Surendra M. Gupta

Seamus McGovern

Remanufacturing, recycling, and disposal recovery operations require the performance of disassembly activities. The disassembly line is the best choice for automated disassembly of returned products, however, finding the optimal balance is computationally intensive with exhaustive search quickly becoming prohibitively large. In this paper, a greedy algorithm is presented for obtaining optimal or near-optimal solutions to the disassembly line balancing problem. The greedy algorithm is a first-fit decreasing algorithm further enhanced to preserve precedence relationships. The algorithm seeks to minimize the number of workstations while accounting for hazardous and high demand components. A hill-climbing heuristic is then developed to balance the …

Pricing Of End-Of-Life Items With Obsolescence, Srikanth Vadde, Sagar V. Kamarthi, Surendra M. Gupta Apr 2012

Pricing Of End-Of-Life Items With Obsolescence, Srikanth Vadde, Sagar V. Kamarthi, Surendra M. Gupta

Sagar Kamarthi

Variability in the inflow of end-of-life (EOL) products and fluctuating inventory levels often make the processing of EOL products an economically risky operation for product recovery facilities (PRFs). Choosing an appropriate pricing policy can enhance the performance of PRFs by methodically clearing their inventory and increasing profits. This work presents two pricing models to counter the prospect of product obsolescence that can happen either gradually or suddenly. Product obsolescence can cause demand drop and inventory pile up, both of which could dent the revenues of PRFs. In the first model, gradual obsolescence and environmental regulations that limit the disposal quantity …

Exact Stability Analysis Of Neutral Systems With Cross-Talking Delays, Nejat Olgac, Tomáš Vyhlídal, Rifat Sipahi Apr 2012

Exact Stability Analysis Of Neutral Systems With Cross-Talking Delays, Nejat Olgac, Tomáš Vyhlídal, Rifat Sipahi

Rifat Sipahi

The stability of neutral systems with two cross-talking delays is investigated using the method of cluster treatment of characteristic roots (CTCR). here are two main outcomes of this study: (a) Generation of the well-known delay stabilizability condition as a by-product of the CTCR procedure. This is achieved by a small delay stability treatment over the system. We also demonstrate for the delay-stabilizable systems the exact bounds of the stability regions in the domain of the delays. (b) Validation of these stability regions using an alternative point-wise algorithm, which computes the right-most roots of the characteristic quasi-polynomial.

Analytical Stability Study Of A Deterministic Car Following Model Under Multiple Delay Interactions, Rifat Sipahi, Silviu-Iulian Niculescu

Rifat Sipahi

Analytical stability study of some deterministic car following models under time-delay influences is presented and various case studies are demonstrated. Interestingly, for some control law deployed by human drivers, more than one stability interval in the domain of time delay is revealed. Physical interpretations along with comparisons conclude the study.

A Comparative Survey In Determining The Imaginary Characteristic Roots Of Lti Time Delayed Systems, Rifat Sipahi, Nejat Olgac Apr 2012

A Comparative Survey In Determining The Imaginary Characteristic Roots Of Lti Time Delayed Systems, Rifat Sipahi, Nejat Olgac

Rifat Sipahi

The aim of this study is to offer a comparison of the numerical procedures for an important problem, the determination of purely imaginary characteristic roots of LTITime Delayed Systems (LTI-TDS). This problem, in fact, has a crucial role in assessing the stability of the general class of vector LTI-TDS x = Ax + Bx(t -τ). There are many procedures discussed in the literature for this purpose. Those, which are exact, first determine the complete set of imaginary characteristic roots of the dynamics, as they constitute the only points where stability switching can take place. These approaches are, in fact, some …

Complete Stability Map Of First Order - Two Time Delay Systems With Delay Cross-Talk, Rifat Sipahi, Nejat Olgac

Rifat Sipahi

First order linear time invariant dynamics is taken into account with two delays. A unique feature is included in this study, from the stability perspective: a term that represents the cross-talk between the two delays. This class of systems can be treated by a unique procedure, which is recently developed, known as Cluster Treatment of Characteristic Roots (CTCR). In the text we present several case studies to display the steps and the strengths of CTCR. We also include some comparison results with respect to a cornerstone study (Hale, and Huang, 1993), which gives a wonderful point of reference for this …
