Deep Learning Object-Based Detection Of Manufacturing Defects In X-Ray Inspection Imaging, Juan C. Parducci
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Current analysis of manufacturing defects in the production of rims and tires via x-ray inspection at an industry partner’s manufacturing plant requires that a quality control specialist visually inspect radiographic images for defects of varying sizes. For each sample, twelve radiographs are taken within 35 seconds. Some defects are very small in size and difficult to see (e.g., pinholes) whereas others are large and easily identifiable. Implementing this quality control practice across all products in its human-effort driven state is not feasible given the time constraint present for analysis.
This study aims to identify and develop an object detector capable …

High entropy alloys (HEAs) can be manufactured in many conventional ways, but it becomes difficult of fabricating heterogeneous materials and structures. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method generally melts pure elemental powders or prefabricated alloy powders without alloying process. In-situ alloying in SLM, which is also called Laser Additive Alloying (LAA), using pure elemental powders becomes a promising method for creating HEA with heterogeneous structures. However, the effect of the diffusion of elements in the molten pool on the formation of HEA remains unclear. In this paper, the well-discussed Cantor HEA was studied in an in-situ alloying situation, where pure elemental …

Evaluating Mixed Reality Training For Calibrating Operators’ Mental Models Of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Ganesh Pai Mangalore
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) offer safety benefits by handling active driving tasks. However, due to limited operational design domain, these systems may require driver intervention, making drivers’ mental models about system limitations and capabilities an important factor when operating them. Literature suggests most drivers are uninformed or unaware of their systems (McDonald et al, 2018), lacking complete or accurate mental models. Mental models (MM) are described as reflections of operators’ knowledge of system’s purpose and various functioning states (Seppelt & Victor, 2020). Incomplete MM of systems’ limitations may also adversely affect drivers’ hazard avoidance behavior.

Laser-induced-forward-transfer (LIFT)-based laser assisted bioprinting (LAB) has great advantages over other three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting techniques, such as none-contact, free of clogging, high precision, and good compatibility. In a typical LIFT based LAB process, a jet flow transfers the bioink from the ribbon to the substrate due to bioink bubble generation and collapse, and the printing quality is highly dependent on the jet flow regime (stable or unstable), so it is a great challenge to understand the connection between the jet flow and the printing outcomes. To tackle this challenge, a novel computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD)-based model was developed in this study to …
