On The Fuel Spray Applications Of Multi-Phase Eulerian Cfd Techniques, Gabriel Lev Jacobsohn Oct 2019

On The Fuel Spray Applications Of Multi-Phase Eulerian Cfd Techniques, Gabriel Lev Jacobsohn

Masters Theses

Eulerian-Eulerian Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques continue to show promise for characterizing the internal flow and near-field spray for various fuel injection systems. These regions are difficult to observe experimentally, and simulations of such regions are limited by computational expense or reliance on empiricism using other methods. The physics governing spray atomization are first introduced. Impinging jet sprays and Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) are selected as applications, and modern computational/experimental approaches to their study are reviewed. Two in-house CFD solvers are described and subsequently applied in several case studies. Accurate prediction of the liquid distribution in a like-doublet impinging jet …

Biomethane Production From Distillery Wastewater, Zachary Christman Jun 2019

Biomethane Production From Distillery Wastewater, Zachary Christman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Distillery wastewater treatment is a great ecological problem, for example, India produces 2.7 billion liters of alcohol that results in 40 billion liters of wastewater. However, this material can be seen as a resource since 11 million cubic meters of biogas at 60% methane could be produced in addition to cleaning the water. The distillery has two options of what to do with the biogas. The first is to use the biogas to fuel the distillery making the production plant more energy efficient and removing some of the need to buy natural gas. The other is to upgrade the biogas …

Effect Of Air-Fuel Ratio On The Combustion Characteristics Of Syngas (H2:Co) In Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman Jun 2014

Effect Of Air-Fuel Ratio On The Combustion Characteristics Of Syngas (H2:Co) In Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman

Ftwi Yohaness Hagos

This paper presents experimental results of the effect of air-fuel ratio on the combustion characteristics of a direct-injection spark-ignition engine fuelled with a syngas of H2/CO composition of equal molar ratio. The engine was operated at fully open throttle and the start of fuel injection (SOI) was set at 180obefore top dead center (BTDC). The spark advance was set to the minimum advance for a maximum brake torque. The experiment was conducted at lean mixture conditions with engine speed ranging from 1500 to 2400 rev/min. The results show that syngas operated under wider operation excess air ratio (λ) as compared …

Trends Of Syngas As A Fuel In Internal Combustion Engines, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman Jan 2014

Trends Of Syngas As A Fuel In Internal Combustion Engines, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman

Syngas from biomass and solid waste is a carbon-neutral fuel believed to be a promising fuel for future engines. It was widely used for spark-ignition engines in the WWII era before being replaced with gasoline. In this paper, the technological development, success, and challenges for application of syngas in power generating plants, the trends of engine technologies, and the potential of this fuel in the current engine technology are highlighted. Products of gasification vary with the variation of input parameters. Therefore, three different syngases selected from the two major gasification product categories are used as case studies. Their fuel properties …

Current Trends In Water-In-Diesel Emulsion As A Fuel, Mohammed Yahaya Khan, Zainal Ambri Abdul Karim, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, Isa Mohd Tan, A. Rashid Abd Aziz Jan 2014

Current Trends In Water-In-Diesel Emulsion As A Fuel, Mohammed Yahaya Khan, Zainal Ambri Abdul Karim, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, Isa Mohd Tan, A. Rashid Abd Aziz

Ftwi Yohaness Hagos

Water-in-diesel emulsion (WiDE) is an alternative fuel for CI engines that can be employed with the existing engine setup with no additional engine retrofitting. It has benefits of simultaneous reduction of both NO x and particulate matters in addition to its impact in the combustion efficiency improvement, although this needs further investigation. This review paper addresses the type of emulsion, the microexplosion phenomenon, emulsion stability and physiochemical improvement, and effect of water content on the combustion and emissions of WiDE fuel. The review also covers the recent experimental methodologies used in the investigation of WiDE for both transport and stationary …

Early Flame Development Image Comparison Of Low Calorific Value Syngas And Cng In Di Si Gas Engine, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman Mar 2013

Early Flame Development Image Comparison Of Low Calorific Value Syngas And Cng In Di Si Gas Engine, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman

Ftwi Yohaness Hagos

The early flame development stage of syngas and CNG are analysed and compared from the flame images taken over 20o CA from the start of ignition. An imitated syngas with a composition of 19.2% H2, 29.6% CO, 5.3% CH4 and balance with nitrogen and carbon dioxide, which resembles the typical product of wood biomass gasification, was used in the study. A CCD camera triggered externally through the signals from the camshaft and crank angle sensors was used in capturing of the images. The engine was accessed through an endoscope access and a self-illumination inside the chamber. The results of the …

Study Of Syngas Combustion Parameters Effect On Internal Combustion Engine, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman Feb 2013

Study Of Syngas Combustion Parameters Effect On Internal Combustion Engine, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman

Ftwi Yohaness Hagos

Syngas is considered to be a viable alternative fuel to fossil derived fuels in both gas turbines and reciprocating gas engines. Detail studies of syngas as a dual fuel in compression ignited engine, diesel as a pilot fuel and as a single fuel in a naturally aspirated spark ignited engines are found in the literature. Even though the prospect of fuelling naturally aspirated spark ignition engine with syngas is very promising and even cost competitive with that of natural gas, it is associated with power de-rating that is mainly provoked by the decrease in volumetric efficiency. With the advancement in …

Combustion Characteristics Of Late Injected Cng In A Spark Ignition Engine Under Lean Operating Condition, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman Dec 2012

Combustion Characteristics Of Late Injected Cng In A Spark Ignition Engine Under Lean Operating Condition, Ftwi Yohaness Hagos, A. Rahsid Abd Aziz, Shaharin A. Sulaiman

Ftwi Yohaness Hagos

Lean combustion strategy is used as a tool in the reduction of greenhouse gas emission in a natural gas fuelled engines. It also increases the thermal efficiency of the combustion. In this study, late injection and stratification effect of lean charge CNG combustion in a four stroke direct injection spark ignited engine was experimentally investigated. The fuel injection is kept at 90° Crank Angle (CA) Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) and the ignition timing at 28° CA BTDC at wide open throttle. Results from this study demonstrate that Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP), it's Coefficient Of Variation (COV), in cylinder …
