Tailoring Materials Behavior Using Geometry.Pdf, Hessein Ali, Hossein Ebrahimi, Ranajay Ghosh Dec 2018

Tailoring Materials Behavior Using Geometry.Pdf, Hessein Ali, Hossein Ebrahimi, Ranajay Ghosh

Hossein Ebrahimi

Many applications require materials whose response can be tuned such as morphing wings for super maneuverable vehicles, soft robotics and space structures. Nature achieves this objective using external dermal features – skin, furs, tooth, feathers. These nonlinearities are generated using the geometry and topology of the scales. The scales provide distinct structural advantages such as protection and tailorable response from scales contact. Scales also aid in highly dynamic life functions – such as locomotion, anti anti-fouling, flapping flights, swimming. Material to structural correlations are highly nonlinear due to scale topology. We aim to reveal structure structure-propertyproperty-architecture correlations for automated 3D …

A Closed-Form Solution For The Similarity Transformation Parameters Of Two Planar Point Sets, Shamsul A. Shamsudin, Andrew P. Murray Feb 2017

A Closed-Form Solution For The Similarity Transformation Parameters Of Two Planar Point Sets, Shamsul A. Shamsudin, Andrew P. Murray

Andrew P. Murray

Image registration covers the set of techniques used in matching images of the same scene. A subset of the image registration problem, identifying the parameters in a similarity transformation, has emerged as useful in a recently defined area of machine design: designing mechanisms for rigidbody shape-change. First, this brief paper shows a potential use for image registration techniques outside the field of machine vision. Second, it presents a closed-form solution for the similarity transformation parameters when the point sets to be matched are restricted to two-dimensional space as is needed in the aforementioned design problem.

Quantifying And Mapping Induced Strain In Canvas Paintings Using Laser Shearography, Philip Klausmeyer, Matthew Cushman, Ivo Dobrev, Morteza Khaleghi, Ellery Harrington, Xiaoran Chen, Cosme Furlong

Morteza Khaleghi

Evaluation of museums’ condition standards used for the exhibition of canvas paintings requires a quantitative technique capable of measuring strain induced by changes in temperature, relative humidity, and the thermomechanical effects of light, as well as the effects of ambient vibration. This paper presents advances in developing a customized shearography system for temporal characterization of strains that occur on canvas paintings when subjected to changes in exhibition conditions. The shearography system performs measurements of displacement derivatives along two orthogonal shearing directions and is synchronized with an IR camera to provide thermal maps of the area analyzed. Innovations incorporated into the …

Tilting Mechanism For A Four Wheeler, Dr V Balambica, Er Vishwa Deepak

Innovative Research Publications IRP India

Here in this paper a tilting mechanism is carried out for a normal fuel run track car to give it the flexibility of a motor cycle. This feature enables the car to tilt in to the curve while negotiating it. Our analysis shows that to increase the maximum curve at speed by more than 50%. The method we have used is a simple mechanical tilting system controlled by a simple DC stepper motor which is controlled electronically. This tilting mechanism if successful should dramatically increase the maximum speed in curves. This should also provide the advantages of increased passenger comfort …

Fast-Framing Ballistic Imaging Of Velocity In An Aerated Spray, David Sedarsky, James Gord, Campbell Carter, Terrence R. Meyer, Mark Linne Nov 2015

Fast-Framing Ballistic Imaging Of Velocity In An Aerated Spray, David Sedarsky, James Gord, Campbell Carter, Terrence R. Meyer, Mark Linne

Terrence R Meyer

We describe further development of ballistic imaging adapted for the liquid core of an atomizing spray. To fully understand spray breakup dynamics, one must measure the velocity and acceleration vectors that describe the forces active in primary breakup. This information is inaccessible to most optical diagnostics, as the signal is occluded by strong scattering in the medium. Ballistic imaging mitigates this scattering noise, resolving clean shadowgram-type images of structures within the dense spray region. We demonstrate that velocity data can be extracted from ballistic images of a spray relevant to fuel-injection applications, by implementing a simple, targeted correlation method for …

Strengthening Of Rc Beam And Column Joint By Using Cfrp & Gfrp, M .A Nawale, A. J. , Mehetre, . S. B. Kandekar

Innovative Research Publications IRP India

This paper will give the information about strengthening of different parameter by using CFRP & GFRP. Strengthening of existing structures has become a major part of construction activity in our country. Many civil structures are no longer safe due to increased load specifications in the design codes. The beam column joint is the crucial zone in a reinforced concrete moment resisting frame. It is subjected to large forces during severe ground shaking and its behaviour has a significant influence on the response of the structure. The assumption of joint being rigid fails to consider the effects of high shear forces …

Design, Fabrication, And Properties Of 2-2 Connectivity Cement/Polymer Based Piezoelectric Composites With Varied Piezoelectric Phase Distribution, Xu Dongyu, Cheng Xin, Sourav Banerjee, Huang Shifeng

Sourav Banerjee

The laminated 2-2 connectivity cement/polymer based piezoelectric composites with variedpiezoelectric phase distribution were fabricated by employing Lead Zirconium Titanate ceramicas active phase, and mixture of cement powder, epoxy resin, and hardener as matrix phase with a mass proportion of 4:4:1. The dielectric, piezoelectric, and electromechanical coupling properties of the composites were studied. The composites with large total volume fraction ofpiezoelectric phase have large piezoelectric strain constant and relative permittivity, and thepiezoelectric and dielectric properties of the composites are independent of the dimensional variations of the piezoelectric ceramic layer. The composites with small total volume fraction of piezoelectric phase have large …

Elastic Wave Field Computation In Multilayered Nonplanar Solid Structures: A Mesh-Free Semianalytical Approach, Sourav Banerjee, Tribikram Kundu Apr 2015

Elastic Wave Field Computation In Multilayered Nonplanar Solid Structures: A Mesh-Free Semianalytical Approach, Sourav Banerjee, Tribikram Kundu

Sourav Banerjee

Multilayered solid structures made of isotropic, transversely isotropic, or general anisotropic materials are frequently used in aerospace, mechanical, and civil structures. Ultrasonic fields developed in such structures by finite size transducers simulating actual experiments in laboratories or in the field have not been rigorously studied. Several attempts to compute the ultrasonic field inside solid media have been made based on approximate paraxial methods like the classical ray tracing and multi-Gaussian beam models. These approximate methods have several limitations. A new semianalytical method is adopted in this article to model elastic wave field in multilayered solid structures with planar or nonplanar …

Phonon Confinement Using Spirally Designed Elastic Resonators In Discrete Continuum, Sourav Banerjee, Raiz U. Ahmed Apr 2015

Phonon Confinement Using Spirally Designed Elastic Resonators In Discrete Continuum, Sourav Banerjee, Raiz U. Ahmed

Sourav Banerjee

Periodic and chiral orientation of microstructures, here we call phononic crystals, have extraordinary capabilities to facilitate the innovative design of new generation metamaterials. Periodic arrangements of phononic crystals are capable of opening portals of non-passing, non-dispersive mechanical waves. Defying conventional design of regular periodicity, in this paper spirally periodic but chiral orientation of resonators are envisioned. Dynamics of the spirally connected resonators and the acoustic wave propagation through the spirally connected multiple local resonators are studied using fundamental physics. In present study the spiral systems with local resonators are assumed to be discrete media immersed in fluid. In this paper …

Synthesis And Formation Mechanism Of Cuins2 Nanocrystals With A Tunable Phase, Chao Yu, Linlin Zhang, Long Tian, Dan Liu, Fanglin Chen, Cheng Wang

Fanglin Chen

Chalcopyrite CuInS2 (CIS) hierarchical structures composed of nanoflakes with a thickness of about 5 nm were synthesized by a facial solvothermal method. The thermodynamically metastable wurtzite phase CIS would be obtained by using InCl3 instead of In(NO3)3 as In precursor. The effects of the In precursor and the volume of concentrated HCl aqueous solution on the phases and morphologies of CIS nanocrystals have been systematically investigated. Experimental results indicated that the obtained phases of CIS nanocrystals were predominantly determined by precursor-induced intermediate products. The photocatalytic properties of chalcopyrite and wurtzite CIS in visible-light-driven degradation of …

The microstructure and connectivity of the ionic and electronic conductive phases in composite ceramic membranes are directly related to device performance. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) including chemical mapping combined with X-ray nanotomography (XNT) have been used to characterize the composition and 3-D microstructure of a MIEC composite model system consisting of a Ce0.8Gd0.2O2 (GDC) oxygen ion conductive phase and a CoFe2O4 (CFO) electronic conductive phase. The microstructural data is discussed, including the composition and distribution of an emergent phase which takes the form of isolated and distinct regions. Performance implications are considered …

Redox Stable Anodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Guoliang Xiao, Fanglin Chen Mar 2015

Redox Stable Anodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Guoliang Xiao, Fanglin Chen

Fanglin Chen

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can convert chemical energy from the fuel directly to electrical energy with high efficiency and fuel flexibility. Ni-based cermets have been the most widely adopted anode for SOFCs. However, the conventional Ni-based anode has low tolerance to sulfur-contamination, is vulnerable to deactivation by carbon build-up (coking) from direct oxidation of hydrocarbon fuels, and suffers volume instability upon redox cycling. Among these limitations, the redox instability of the anode is particularly important and has been intensively studied since the SOFC anode may experience redox cycling during fuel cell operations even with the ideal pure hydrogen as …

La0.7Sr0.3Fe0.7Ga0.3O3-Δ As Electrode Material For A Symmetrical Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Zhibin Yang, Yu Chen, Chao Jin, Guoliang Xiao, Minfang Han, Fanglin Chen

Fanglin Chen

In this research, La0.7Sr0.3Fe0.7Ga0.3O3−δ (LSFG) perovskite oxide was successfully prepared using a microwave-assisted combustion method, and employed as both anode and cathode in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells. A maximum power density of 489 mW cm−2 was achieved at 800 °C with wet H2 as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant in a single cell with the configuration LSFG|La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.83Mg0.17O3−δ|LSFG. Furthermore, the cells demonstrated good stability in H2 and acceptable sulfur tolerance.

A Sinteractive Ni-Bazr0.8Y0.2O3-Δ Composite Membrane For Hydrogen Separation, Shumin Fang, Siwei Wang, Kyle S. Brinkman, Fanglin Chen Mar 2015

A Sinteractive Ni-Bazr0.8Y0.2O3-Δ Composite Membrane For Hydrogen Separation, Shumin Fang, Siwei Wang, Kyle S. Brinkman, Fanglin Chen

Fanglin Chen

BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ (BZY) is an excellent candidate material for hydrogen permeation membranes due to its high bulk proton conductivity, mechanical robustness, and chemical stability in H2O- and CO2-containing environments. Unfortunately, the use of BZY as a separation membrane has been greatly restrained by its highly refractory nature, poor grain boundary proton conductivity, high number of grain boundaries resulting from limited grain growth during sintering, as well as low electronic conductivity. These problems can be resolved by the fabrication of a Ni–BZY composite membrane with large BZY grains, which requires the development …

Low Temperature, Organic-Free Synthesis Of Ba3B6O9(Oh)6 Nanorods And Ss-Bab2O4 Nanospindles, Rui Li, Xinyoung Tao, Xiaodong Li Feb 2015

Low Temperature, Organic-Free Synthesis Of Ba3B6O9(Oh)6 Nanorods And Ss-Bab2O4 Nanospindles, Rui Li, Xinyoung Tao, Xiaodong Li

Xiaodong Li

Using a low temperature, organic-free hydrothermal technique, single-crystalline barium polyborate Ba3B6O9(OH)6 (BBOH) nanorods were synthesized. It was found that β-BaB2O4(BBO) nanospindles can be achieved by annealing the BBOH nanorods at a relatively low temperature of 810 °C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques were used to characterize these nanomaterials. The formation mechanisms are discussed in conjunction with the crystallographic characteristics and surface energy of the BBOH nanorods and BBO nanospindles. UV-vis absorption spectra demonstrated that both BBOH nanorods and BBO nanospindles are …

Enhance Diamond Coating Adhesion By Oriented Interlayer Microcracking, Habio Guo, Xingcheng Xiao, Yue Qi, Zhi-Hui Xu, Xiaodong Li Feb 2015

Enhance Diamond Coating Adhesion By Oriented Interlayer Microcracking, Habio Guo, Xingcheng Xiao, Yue Qi, Zhi-Hui Xu, Xiaodong Li

Xiaodong Li

In this paper, we report a microcrack toughening mechanism for enhancing the adhesion of diamondcoating. The oriented microcracks were formed within the TiC interlayer to dissipate strain energy and accommodate deformation via the crack opening-closing mechanism, thus enhancing the coating/substrate interfacial toughness. The delamination of diamondcoating was effectively prevented when the parallel microcracks were confined within the interlayer and arrested at interfaces of coating/interlayer/substrate. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the highly anisotropicfracture strength of the TiC phase energetically favors crack initiation and propagation along (100) planes only, which are 54.7° away from the interface. These microcracks are constrained inside …

In Situ Synthesis Of Ultrafine Ss-Mno2/Polypyrrole Nanorod Composites For High-Performance Supercapacitors, Jianfeng Zang, Xiaodong Li Feb 2015

In Situ Synthesis Of Ultrafine Ss-Mno2/Polypyrrole Nanorod Composites For High-Performance Supercapacitors, Jianfeng Zang, Xiaodong Li

Xiaodong Li

We report a remarkable observation that is at odds with the established notion that β-MnO2 was regarded as an undesirable candidate for supercapacitor applications. The specific capacitance of β-MnO2 can reach as high as 294 F g−1, which is comparable to the best crystallographic structure, like α-MnO2. The key is to substantially decrease the size of β-MnO2 powders to ultra small regime. We demonstrate a facile, simple, and effective approach to synthesizing ultrafine (<10 nm in diameter) β-MnO2/polypyrrole nanorod composite powders for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. Our observation may encourage a revisit of the other good or even bad candidate …

Stress And Strain Adaptation In Load-Dependent Remodeling Of The Embryonic Left Ventricle, Christine Buffinton Jan 2014

Stress And Strain Adaptation In Load-Dependent Remodeling Of The Embryonic Left Ventricle, Christine Buffinton

Christine M Buffinton

Altered pressure in the developing left ventricle (LV) results in altered morphology and tissue material properties. Mechanical stress and strain may play a role in the regulating process. This study showed that confocal microscopy, three-dimensional reconstruction, and finite element analysis can provide a detailed model of stress and strain in the trabeculated embryonic heart. The method was used to test the hypothesis that end-diastolic strains are normalized after altered loading of the LV during the stages of trabecular compaction and chamber formation. Stage-29 chick LVs subjected to pressure overload and underload at stage 21 were reconstructed with full trabecular morphology …

Impact Damage On A Thin Glass Plate With A Thin Polycarbonate Backing, Wenke Hu, Yenan Wang, Jian Yu, Chian-Fong Yen, Florin Bobaru Nov 2013

Impact Damage On A Thin Glass Plate With A Thin Polycarbonate Backing, Wenke Hu, Yenan Wang, Jian Yu, Chian-Fong Yen, Florin Bobaru

Florin Bobaru Ph.D.

We present experimental and computational results for the impact of a spherical projectile on a thin glass plate with a thin polycarbonate backing plate, restrained in a metal frame, or in the absence of the frame. We analyze the dependence of the damage patterns in the glass plate on the increasing impact velocities, from 61 m/s to 200 m/s. Experimental results are compared with those from peridynamic simulations of a simplified model. The main fracture patterns observed experimentally are captured by the peridynamic model for each of the three projectile velocities tested. More accurate implementation of the actual boundary conditions …
