Sound Absorption Properties Of Functionally Graded Polyurethane Foams, Olivier Doutres Ph.D., Noureddine Atalla Pr.

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

Noise control over a wide frequency band is an increasingly important design criterion in the building and transport industries. Examples of well known broadband passive concepts for optimal sound absorption are multi-layering with graded properties across the thickness and optimization of the material shape (e.g., wedges). However, for typical applications, the material thickness is limited and shaping or use of different material costly. Thus, there is growing interest for developing acoustical materials having microstructure properties gradient at the micro- or meso-scale; also known as Functionally Graded Materials (FGM). Even if sophisticated models are available to predict the acoustic behavior of …

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

This work investigates the links between the microstructure of polyurethane foams and their sound absorbing efficiency, and more specifically the effect of membranes closing the cells. In a previous work, the authors proposed a semi-empirical approach to link the foam microstructure properties, i.e. reticulation rate, strut length and thickness, with its non-acoustic parameters. The study was based on the complete characterization of 15 isotropic polyurethane foams with various cell sizes and reticulation rates (i.e. open pore content). This paper proposes a validation of this semi-empirical model using 3 new polyurethane foams, not used in the first characterization set. More importantly, …

Local Non-Equilibrium Diffusion Model For Solute Trapping During Rapid Solidification, Sergey Sobolev Jan 2012

Local Non-Equilibrium Diffusion Model For Solute Trapping During Rapid Solidification, Sergey Sobolev

Sergey Sobolev

A local non-equilibrium diffusion model (LNDM) for rapid solidification of binary alloys has been briefly reviewed and used to modify a number of solute trapping models with different solid–liquid interface kinetics. The LNDM takes into account deviation from local equilibrium of a solute diffusion field in bulk liquid on the basis that the exact solutions to hyperbolic diffusion equations govern the solute concentration and solute flux in bulk liquid under local non-equilibrium conditions. The LNDM leads to a velocity-dependent effective diffusion coefficient in bulk liquid ahead of the solid–liquid interface, which goes to zero when the interface velocity goes to …

Rapid Colloidal Solidifications Under Local Nonequilibrium Diffusion Conditions, Sergey Sobolev Jan 2012

Rapid Colloidal Solidifications Under Local Nonequilibrium Diffusion Conditions, Sergey Sobolev

Sergey Sobolev

Partition coefficient for rapid solidification of colloidal suspensions has been calculated under local nonequilibrium diffusion conditions typically used when processing advanced materials. It has been demonstrated that the local nonequilibrium diffusion effects stabilize the planar solid liquid interface and lead to an abrupt transition to diffusionless solidification with complete particle trapping. The effective diffusion coefficient, which depends on interface velocity and particle size, has been introduced. It explains the strong dependences of the partition coefficient and the velocity leading to absolute stability of a planar solid–liquid interface on particle size.

An Analytical Model For Local-Nonequilibrium Solute Trapping During Rapid Solidification, Sergey Sobolev Jan 2012

An Analytical Model For Local-Nonequilibrium Solute Trapping During Rapid Solidification, Sergey Sobolev

Sergey Sobolev

Updated version of local non-equilibrium diffusion model (LNDM) for rapid solidification of binary alloys was considered. The LNDM takes into account deviation from local equilibrium of solute concentration and solute flux fields in bulk liquid. The exact solutions for solute concentration and flux in bulk liquid were obtained using hyperbolic diffusion equations. The results show the transition from diffusion-limited to purely thermally controlled solidification with effective diffusion coefficient D →0 and complete solute trapping K(v)→1 at V→VDb for any kind of solid-liquid interface kinetics. Critical parameter for diffusionless solidification and complete solute trapping is the diffusion speed in bulk liquid …

Optimization Of The Acoustic Performance Of Polyimide Foams, Olivier Doutres, Noureddine Atalla, Rebecca Wulliman, Shari Ferguson, Steve Bailey Jul 2011

Optimization Of The Acoustic Performance Of Polyimide Foams, Olivier Doutres, Noureddine Atalla, Rebecca Wulliman, Shari Ferguson, Steve Bailey

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

Due to their low weight, high fire resistance and good mechanical strength, SOLIMIDE® Polyimide foams are good candidates for sound packages in aerospace sound transmission applications. However, their high resistance to airflow limits the sound absorption efficiency inside a double wall structure and thus the sound transmission loss of the structure. The paper discusses two concepts to improve the transmission efficiency of such materials for double wall applications: (i) improving its sound absorption behavior by removing mechanically or chemically the cell membranes and thus decreasing both the flow resistance and tortuosity, (ii) coupling the Polyimide foams to screens (porous or …

A Practical Impedance Tube Method To Estimate The Normal Incidence Sound Transmission Loss Of Double Wall Structure, Olivier Doutres, Noureddine Atalla

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

The objective of this paper is to propose a practical impedance tube method to optimize the sound transmission loss of double wall structure by concentrating on the sound package placed inside the structure. In a previous work, the authors derived an expression that breaks down the transmission loss of a double wall structure containing a sound absorbing blanket separated from the panels by air layers in terms of three main contributions; (i) sound transmission loss of the panels, (ii) sound transmission loss of the blanket and (iii) sound absorption due to multiple reflections inside the cavity. The sound transmission loss …

Cryogenic Technique For Processing Steel Treatment, Ajit Behera Jan 2011

Cryogenic Technique For Processing Steel Treatment, Ajit Behera

Ajit Behera

Cryogenics or deep freezing have been around for quite some time. There is documented research from as far back as the 1930’s where German companies used it on components of jumbo aircraft engines. Cryogenic processing had its US origins in the 1940s. Cold treatments or sub zero treatments are done to make sure there is no retained austenite during quenching. Cryogenics is a relatively new process and to eliminate retained austenite, the temperature has to be lowered, but one that using correct procedures can bring substantial economic benefits. In cryogenic treatment the material is to be deep freeze temperatures of …
