Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

The relatively high turnover of timber sleepers (crossties in a plain track), bearers (skeleton ties in a turnout), and transoms (bridge cross beams) is responsible for producing greenhouse gas emissions 6 times greater than an equivalent reinforced concrete counterparts. This paper presents an innovative solution for the replacement of aging timber transoms installed on existing railway bridges along with the incorporation of a continuous walkway platform, which is proven to provide environmental, safety and financial benefits. Piezoelectric transducers, long used in the generation and detection of ultrasonic waves, have more recently been the detector of choice for acoustic emission signals. Optical probing methods, however, have several important advantages for acoustic emission studies: (1) they have an inherent broad frequency response, free from mechanical resonances, (2) they do not interfere with the acoustic waves. Conductive ink formulations with different electrical properties and their sintering methods after printing are an emerging area of interest. In this work, different line width and resolutions were printed on a a flexible PET substrate using a nano silver based conductive ink with gravure printing. Then printed traces were sintered with two different sintering methods and the results were compared.

Hollow nanoparticles (NPs) are produced by void nucleation and growth during chemical reactions. However, there is no proper understanding of nucleation and growth mechanisms, and their predictive modeling. Furthermore, models based on the Kirkendall effect predict the process time, which is larger by orders of magnitude than in the experiment. A continuum-mechanics approach for nucleation and growth of a nanovoid in reacting NPs based on the Kirkendall effect is developed, which quantitatively describes the experimental results for oxidation of copper NPs. Gadolinium (Gd) is a unique and powerful element in chemistry and biomedicine which can be applied simultaneously to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray computed tomography (CT), and neutron capture therapy for cancers. This multifunctionality can be maximized using gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanoparticles (GNPs) because of the large amount of Gd per GNP, making both diagnosis and therapy (i.e., theragnosis) for cancers possible using only GNPs. Step meandering instability in a Burton-Cabrera-Frank (BCF)-type model for the growth of an isolated, atomically high step on a crystal surface is analyzed. It is assumed that the growth is sustained by the molecular precursors deposition on a terrace and their decomposition into atomic constituents; both processes are explicitly modeled. A strongly nonlinear evolution PDE for the shape of the step is derived in the long-wave limit and without assuming smallness of the amplitude; this equation may be transformed into a convective Cahn-Hilliard-type PDE for the step slope. Electromigration-Driven Evolution Of The Surface Morphology And Composition For A Bi-Component Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner, Mahdi Bandegi

A two PDEs-based model is developed for studies of a morphological and compositional evolution of a thermodynamically stable alloy surface in a strong electric field, assuming different and anisotropic diffusional mobilities of the two atomic components. The linear stability analysis of a planar surface and the computations of morphology coarsening are performed. It is shown that the conditions for instability and the characteristic wavelength and growth rate differ from their counterparts in a single-component film. Computational parametric analyses reveal the sensitivity of the scaling exponents to the electric field strength and to the magnitude of anisotropies difference.

It is well known that magnetic energy of the piezoelectric beam is relatively small, and it does not change the overall dynamics. Therefore, the models, relying on electrostatic or quasi-static approaches, completely ignore the magnetic energy stored/produced in the beam. A single piezoelectric beam model without the magnetic effects is known to be exactly observable and exponentially stabilizable in the energy space. However, the model with the magnetic effects is proved to be not exactly observable/exponentially stabilizable in the energy space for almost all choices of material parameters.
