Chemical And Electronic Structure Of Surfaces And Interfaces In Cadmium Telluride Based Photovoltaic Devices, Douglas Arthur Duncan

The surface and interface properties are of the upmost importance in the understanding, optimization, and application for photovoltaic devices. Often the chemical, electronic, and morphological properties of the films are empirically optimized, however when progress slows, a fundamental understanding of these properties can lead to breakthroughs. In this work, surfaces and interfaces of solar cell-relevant films are probed with a repertoire of X-ray analytical and microanalysis techniques including X-ray photoelectron (XPS), X-ray excited Auger electron (XAES), X-ray emission (XES) spectroscopies, and atomic force (AFM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopies.

Iowa State Research Farm Progress Reports

Direct energy expenses (diesel, gasoline, propane, electricity) total more than $1 billion annually for Iowa’s farmers. Day-to-day farm management techniques such as adjusting tractor gear and throttle settings, making use of front-wheel-drive, and other strategies can reduce diesel fuel consumption for row crop production and general tractor operations. This study is being conducted over multiple years to measure the effects of energy management techniques on tractor fuel consumption during field operations.

Since the discovery of fullerenes in 1985, their exohedral functionalization has been necessary to increase their solubility and explore their properties and potential applications in materials science and medicinal chemistry. This Thesis provides a short overview of the importance of electronic, size and shape complementarity in determining the structures of specific endohedral fullerene compounds. This is followed by a description of a new method for the separation of scandium nitride endohedral fullerenes Sc3N@C2n (n = 34, 39 and 40), and their monofunctionalization.

Tungsten Oxide (WO3) films and low-dimensional structures have proven to be promising candidates in the fields of photonics and electronics. WO3 is a well-established n-type semiconductor characterized by unique electrochromic behavior, an ideal optical band gap that permits transparency over a wide spectral range, and high chemical integrity. The plethora of diverse properties endow WO3 to be highly effective in applications related to electrochromism, gas sensing, and deriving economical energy. Organic solar cells were fabricated from polymers based on benzodifuran and benzobisoxazole. Through optimizations, a maximum power conversion efficiency of 2.89 % was obtained for solar cells fabricated with benzodifuran-based polymers. Through similar optimizations, a maximum power conversion efficieny of 2.78% was obtained for solar cells fabricated with benzobisoxazole-based polymers.

Over the last few decades, interest in hydrogen-storage materials as an alternative high-efficiency and safe, green energy carriers is steadily increasing. Among numerous hydrides scrutinized for the purpose over the past 10-15 years, aluminum- and magnesium-based systems attract continued attention, mainly because of their high gravimetric capacity and low cost. However, difficulties associated with facile synthesis and hence the reversibility, relatively high desorption temperatures, and sluggish kinetics in many of these systems are still of great concern and hold them back from broad, large-scale applications, e.g. in automotive industry.
