A novel nickel (Ni) based resistance temperature detector (RTD) was successfully developed for temperature monitoring applications. The RTD was fabricated by depositing Ni ink on a flexible polyimide substrate using the screen printing process. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to study the thermal behavior of the Ni ink and it was observed that the Ni ink can withstand up to 200°C before decomposition of the binder in the ink system. Scanning electron microscopy and white light interferometry were used to analyze the surface morphology of the printed Ni. X-ray diffractometry was used to obtain structural information, phase and crystallite size ...

Traditional printing technologies and conductive/functional inks have been integrated to print electronic devices and circuits on really think, lightweight and flexible materials in a time and cost-effective manner. Printing is an additive manufacturing technology, which selectively deposits materials only where needed to produce a wide range of devices including sensors, smart packaging, solar panels, batteries, light sources and wearable electronics. Therefore, it greatly reduces the number of required steps for manufacturing as well as the amount of waste generated relative to conventional electronic manufacturing. However, the process requirements and ink formulations to print electronics differ from graphic printing; therefore ...

In recent years, traditional printing methods have been integrated to print flexible electronic devices and circuits. Since process requirements for electronics diff er from those for graphic printing, the fundamentals require rediscovery mainly to optimize manufacturing techniques and to find cost reduction methods without compromising functional performance. In addition, alternative inks need to be formulated to increase the variety of functional inks and to pioneer new product developments. In this report, we investigate a thermoplastic-based nickel ink prototype to print electrodes using a screen-printing process. Process fundamentals are explored, and cost reduction methods are addressed by studying ...

The packaging sector is one of the massive traditional fields in the printing industry. The rapid developments in technology and environmental regulations have been affecting the expectations from packaging. User demands and the concerns to protect the environment are the two main factors that now demanding change in material properties. The choice used to depend on the physical and chemical requirements of the products, although today’s global mind set on the concepts such as biodegradability, recyclability, reusability, sustainability and carbon footprint reduction are becoming the reason to tailor packaging properties. In general, the choices have been switching from petroleum ...

A fully printed nickel (Ni) based resistance temperature detector (RTD) was successfully developed for temperature sensing applications in the automobile, agricultural and consumer electronic industries. The RTD was fabricated by
depositing nickel (Ni) ink on a flexible polyimide (PI) substrate using screen printing process. The capability of the printed RTD was demonstrated by measuring its resistive response for temperatures varying from -60 °C to 180 °C, in steps of 20 °C and its sensing characteristics such as linearity, sensitivity and repeatability were analyzed. The printed RTD demonstrated a linear response with resistive changes as high as 109% at 180 °C ...

Printed Dot Quality In Response To Doctor Blade Angle, Bilge N. Altay, Alexandra Pekarovicova, Paul D. Fleming Dec 2016

Printed Dot Quality In Response To Doctor Blade Angle, Bilge N. Altay, Alexandra Pekarovicova, Paul D. Fleming

Bilge Nazli Altay

Doctor blade is one of the critical machine part of the gravure printing press that controls the amount of ink transfer on the substrate. The angle of the blade can be varied; however, an improper angle may cause major problems. In this study, the doctor blade angle was positioned at three different level to address its effect on the printed dot quality. Print trials were made on a web-fed gravure press at the speed of 650 ft./min. A high-resolution overhead camera was used to analyze the key dot attributes. The results showed that measuring only the density of printed ...

Thermal Vs. Photonic Sintering Of Nano Silver Based Conductive Inks, Bilge N. Altay, Paul D. Fleming

Bilge Nazli Altay

Conductive ink formulations with different electrical properties and their sintering methods after printing are an emerging area of interest. In this work, different line width and resolutions were printed on a a flexible PET substrate using a nano silver based conductive ink with gravure printing. Then printed traces were sintered with two different sintering methods and the results were compared.

Determination Of Color Stability In Electrophotographic Digital Printing Systems, S. Kocabey, T. Sahinbaskan, Bilge N. Altay

Bilge Nazli Altay

As a result of rapid technological advances in printing industry, digital printing systems now holds an important place. Looking at these systems in general, two technologies come forward. First one is continuous inkjet and the second is electrophotographic printing system. Digital printing systems have some advantages as well as some disadvantages. One of them is to provide color stability and reliability. A latent image is generated on the drum by electric charge in electrophotographic printing system. Toner is brought onto the latent image thanks to the electric charge on the latent image. The toner on the drum is collected on ...

Digital printing is a commonly used for small and medium run length printing. It seems to be an alternative to traditional printing systems as its print speed and quality improve each day. Printing can be done by digital printing machines using many different substrates and toners. Different color and quality results can be obtained depending on the substrates used in digital printing systems as well as in other printing systems. Substrates give different results for density and Lab values depending on their surface characteristics even if they print at the same printing conditions. Electrophotographic printing technology is one of the ...
