Software Defined Radio For Hybrid Beamforming Applications, Jianyet Lee Jan 2019

Software Defined Radio For Hybrid Beamforming Applications, Jianyet Lee

Dissertations and Theses

Beamforming techniques have been deployed in both licensed networks such as LTE network and unlicensed network such as IEEE802.11ac WiFi. The scope of work for this thesis is to leverage the benefits of beamforming techniques and software defined radio platform in developing a fully functioning LTE testbed. The testbed can be further developed to specific application for drone-to-drone or D2D communication independent of intervention from base stations. Applying beamforming techniques to devices such as drones can solve poor quality signal detection at the receivers due to the interference signals generated by other devices in the attempt to communicate with the …

Passive Self-Interference Suppression For Single Channel Full-Duplex Operation, Adam Narbudowicz, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann Jan 2018

Passive Self-Interference Suppression For Single Channel Full-Duplex Operation, Adam Narbudowicz, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann

Articles

Full duplex radios have become a topic of increased interest in the wireless communications community. As part of this development, many efforts were directed to passively decrease the self-interference level at the antenna outputs. However, in many proposed solutions transmission and reception occur through different propagation channels. This paper demonstrates and quantifies the negative impact of channel differentiation on pivotal applications of full-duplex radio, such as cognitive radio. Antenna designs used for self-interference suppression in full-duplex radio architectures are analyzed. In order to ensure that transmission and reception occur within the same propagation channel, the use of the envelope correlation …

Wireless Communication For Greenhouse Environment, Chris J. Lambert, Dean T. Lockman, Ian A. Nielsen Jun 2017

Wireless Communication For Greenhouse Environment, Chris J. Lambert, Dean T. Lockman, Ian A. Nielsen

Electrical Engineering

Modern day population growth and global climate change requires high-yield agricultural systems that can function in harsh environments. Greenhouses can maintain temperature and humidity, while serving as a protective, nurturing alternative to vulnerable farm environments. With weather effects eliminated, greenhouses provide productive environments for experimental agriculture techniques such as hydroponics and aquaculture. These methods of agriculture, specifically aquaculture, require constant monitoring. The failure of electronic devices such as an air pump prove fatal to a fish population in a short time frame. In developing countries, agricultural locations may be a significant distance from a farmer’s home, with no internet or …

Design And Analysis Of Circularly Polarized Electrically Small Antennas, Jesse R. Ludwig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A growing need for efficient wireless communication is prevalent in the world in which we live. From cell phones to television to GPS applications, wireless communications are vital in consumer electronics and military applications. In these applications, a miniaturized antenna is sometimes necessary for reducing overall size of the communication system. For many satellite based communication applications, circular polarization in antennas is needed for efficient communication. In this thesis, the miniaturization technique known as T-top loading is utilized on two novel antenna designs. One design is an electrically small, circularly polarized planar cross dipole and the other design is a …

Auto-Tuning Antenna, John Chen, Jennifer Tighe Dec 2011

Auto-Tuning Antenna, John Chen, Jennifer Tighe

Electrical Engineering

Radio transmitters and antennas have differing impedances at the output and feedpoint, depending on frequency. Modern antenna tuning methods involve manual or automatic resistance and reactance network adjustment to match transmitter and antenna impedance. This reduces power reflections to the transmitter, but introduces losses and prevents full transmitter power from being radiated at the antenna. This project utilizes a variable length antenna element to tune and match transmitter and antenna impedances, allowing efficient power transfer to the antenna. The antenna length varies from 0 to 30.5 inches. The method involves an RF signal with a maximum power of 2 watts …

Monofilar Spiral Slot Antenna For Dual-Frequency Dual-Sense Circular Polarization, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann Aug 2011

Monofilar Spiral Slot Antenna For Dual-Frequency Dual-Sense Circular Polarization, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A dual-band antenna with right-hand circular polarization for the first frequency and the counter polarization at the second frequency is realized with compact printed spiral slots. The coupled spiral slots are fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line. Dual-sense circularly-polarized performance is achieved by realizing oppositely-directed current rotation for the two frequency bands. A parametric study shows that the additional slot significantly improves the bandwidth for both frequency bands. Measured results show that the fractional impedance bandwidth is greater than 18% for both bands. The 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidths are 4.5% and 3.5% for the RHCP and LHCP bands, respectively.

Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann Aug 2011

Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A wideband dual-frequency dual-polarized printed antenna is proposed for LTE, WLAN, and UWB systems. The dual-band antenna provides wide impedance bandwidths of 74% with respect to the center frequency of 2.725 GHz, and 39% with respect to the center frequency of 7.15 GHz. An open slot in the ground plane between the feed arms provides an orthogonal path to realize an embedded circularly polarized band at 2.35 GHz with an axial-ratio bandwidth of 16%. Dual-band characteristics are achieved by an asymmetrical dipole-like element and the coupling configuration between the T-shaped feed line and the wide ground-plane slot.
