The Design Of Medium Access Control (Mac) Protocols For Energy Efficient And Qos Provision In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yang Liu Dec 2004

The Design Of Medium Access Control (Mac) Protocols For Energy Efficient And Qos Provision In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yang Liu

Masters Theses

This thesis work focuses on innovative design of media access control (MAC) protocols in wireless sensor networks (WNSs). The characteristics of the WSN inquire that the network service design considers both energy efficiency and the associated application requirement. However, most existing protocols address only the issue of energy efficiency.

In this thesis, a MAC protocol has been proposed (referred to as Q-MAC) that not only minimized the energy consumption in multi-hop WSNs, but also provides Quality of Service (QoS) by differentiating network services based on priority levels prescribed by different applications. The priority levels reflect the state of system resources …

Theses and Dissertations

This trade study has two objectives. The first provides a trade space analysis of differing array architectures and associated radio frequency components using system-modeling tools. The second objective develops system modeling tools aiding similar analysis by other users. These objectives were accomplished by evaluating a selected group of output parameters to include overall system cost, mass, and power consumption, as well as the minimum detectable input level, system spurious free dynamic range, and selected beam spoilage parameters caused by the use of discrete phase shifters. A fixed number of designs were evaluated using simulation. The evaluation process examined input parameter …

Curvature Variation As Measure Of Shape Information, Sreenivas Rangan Sukumar Dec 2004

Curvature Variation As Measure Of Shape Information, Sreenivas Rangan Sukumar

Masters Theses

In this thesis, we present the Curvature Variation Measure (CVM) as our informational approach to shape description. We base our algorithm on shape curvature, and extract shape information as the entropic measure of the curvature. We present definitions to estimate curvature for both discrete 2D curves and 3D surfaces and then formulate our theory of shape information from these definitions.

With focus on reverse engineering and under vehicle inspection, we document our research efforts in constructing a scanning mechanism to model real world objects. We use a laser-based range sensor for the data collection and discuss view-fusion and integration to …

A Method Of Minimizing The Power Losses In An Induction Motor With A Squirrel-Cage With Vector Control, Boukhemis Chetate, Aissa Kheldoun

Boukhemis Chetate

An approach to optimizing the flux linkage of the rotor of an induction motor is considered when the motor operates in a vector control mode with indirect orientation in the direction of the field. In this system, the expression for the frequency of the rotor e.m.f. contains the rotor winding impedance; this impedance must therefore be precisely estimated in real time. It is proposed that this should be done using a fuzzy-logic adaptation mechanism. The results of using such a mechanism in a physical model confirm its effectiveness. Key words: induction motor, rotor, vector control, fuzzy logic.

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin Nov 2004

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin

Faculty Publications

Results of two-dimensional numerical simulations of gate lag and current collapse in GaN heterostructurefield-effect transistors are presented. Simulation results clearly show that current collapse takes place only if an enhanced trapping occurs under the gate edges. Hot electrons play an instrumental role in the collapse mechanism. The simulation results also link the current collapse with electrons spreading into the buffer layer and confirm that a better electron localization (as in a double heterostructurefield-effect transistor) can dramatically reduce current collapse.

Achromatic Angle-Insensitive Infrared Quarter-Wave Retarder Based On Total Internal Reflection At The Si–Sio2 Interface, R. M.A. Azzam, Cristina L. Spinu Oct 2004

Achromatic Angle-Insensitive Infrared Quarter-Wave Retarder Based On Total Internal Reflection At The Si–Sio2 Interface, R. M.A. Azzam, Cristina L. Spinu

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

An achromatic infrared (λ = 1.2–4 μm), Si-prism quarter-wave retarder (QWR) is described that uses total internal reflection at a buried Si–SiO2 interface at an angle of incidence φ near 33°, where ∂Δ/∂φ = 0. The retardance Δ deviates from 90° by <±2° within a field of view of ±10° (in air) over the entire bandwidth. Because the SiO2 layer at the base of the prism is optically thick, this QWR is unaffected by environmental contamination.

Pulse Multiplication In Forced-Commutated Current Source Converters By Dc Ripple Reinjection, J. Arrillaga, N. R. Watson, Lasantha B. Perera, Y. H. Liu

Lasantha Bernard Perera

A dc-ripple reinjection scheme is described that doubles the number of pulses of the forcecommutated current source converter. The reinjection circuit includes a feedback converter in series with the dc output which provides automatic adjustment of the reinjected current as the dc side current changes. The reinjection concept is also generalised to produce pulse multiplication.

A Generalized Neuron Based Pss In A Multi-Machine Power System, D. K. Chaturvedi, O. P. Malik, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

An artificial neural network can work as an intelligent controller for nonlinear dynamic systems through learning, as it can easily accommodate the nonlinearities and time dependencies. In dealing with complex problems, most common neural networks have some drawbacks of large training time, large number of neurons and hidden layers. These drawbacks can be overcome by a nonlinear controller based on a generalized neuron (GN) which retains the quick response of neural net. Results of studies with a GN-based power system stabilizer on a five-machine power system show that it can provide good damping over a wide operating range and significantly …

Applications Of Generalised Neural Network For Aircraft Landing Control System, D. K. Chaturvedi, R. Chauhan, P. K. Kalra Sep 2004

Applications Of Generalised Neural Network For Aircraft Landing Control System, D. K. Chaturvedi, R. Chauhan, P. K. Kalra

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

It is observed that landing performance is the most typical phase of an aircraft perfromance. During landing operation the stability and controllability are the major considerations. To achieve safe landing, an aircraft has to be controlled in such a way that its wheels touch the ground comfortably and gently within the paved surface of the runway. The conventional control theory found very successful in solving well defined problems, which are described precisely with definite and clearly mentioned boundaries. In real life systems the boundaries can't be defined clearly and conventional controller does not give satisfactory results. Whenever, an aircraft deviates …

Volume Holographic Recording And Readout For 90-Deg Geometry, Partha P. Banerjee, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Nickolai Kukhtarev, Tatiana Kukhtareva Sep 2004

Volume Holographic Recording And Readout For 90-Deg Geometry, Partha P. Banerjee, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Nickolai Kukhtarev, Tatiana Kukhtareva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

When a prerecorded cross-beam hologram is reconstructed (so-called edge-lit readout) with a uniform plane wave and a point source, the resulting exact solutions reveal Bessel-function-type diffracted beam profiles, which are fundamentally modified under weak propagational diffraction. The case of a profiled beam readout with propagational diffraction may be analyzed using a transfer function approach based on 2-D Laplace transforms. In a second series of investigations, dynamic readout from a cross-beam volume hologram recorded with two orthogonal uniform plane waves is considered for various dependences of the refractive index modulation with intensity. Typically, refractive index profiles that are proportional to the …

Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Ching-Cherng Sun, Partha P. Banerjee Sep 2004

Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Ching-Cherng Sun, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The final two papers are concerned with the analysis of novel holograms. Banerjee et al. investigate holographic recording and reconstruction for edge-lit holograms recorded in a 90-degree geometry. Various cases of recording and readout that incorporate propagational diffraction have been modeled. It is shown that the 90-degree geometry can result in beam shaping, as evidenced through preliminary experimental results with photorefractive lithium niobate. Nguyen et al. propose a new approach for designing computer-generated holograms. An artificial neural network is used to initiate the genetic algorithm so that the high computation cost of genetic algorithms for synthesizing holograms is significantly reduced …

Electrostatic Radio Frequency (Rf) Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Switches With Metal Alloy Electric Contacts, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

RF MEMS switches are paramount in importance for improving current and enabling future USAF RF systems. Electrostatic micro-switches are ideal for RF applications because of their superior performance and low power consumption. The primary failure mechanisms for micro-switches with gold contacts are becoming stuck closed and increased contact resistance with increasing switch cycles. This dissertation reports on the design, fabrication, and testing of micro-switches with sputtered bi-metallic (i.e., gold (Au)-on-Au-(6.3at%)platinum (Pt)), binary alloy (i.e., Au-(3.7at%)palladium (Pd) and Au-(6.3at%)Pt), and ternary alloy (i.e., Au-(5at%)Pt-(0.5at%)copper (Cu)) contact metals. Performance was evaluated, in-part, using measured contact resistance and lifetime results. The micro-switches with …

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology holds great promise for future navigation systems because of the reduced size and cost of MEMS inertial sensors relative to conventional devices. Current MEMS devices are much less accurate than standard inertial sensors, but they can still be useful. In this thesis, data was recorded from an inexpensive MEMS inertial measurement unit and integrated with GPS measurements using a tightly-coupled Kalman filter. The overall goal of this research is to investigate the usefulness of MEMS sensors for a small, real-time, low-cost INS/GPS integration. A golf cart was used to collect dynamic data, along with a commercial …

Network Anomaly Detection Using Management Information Base (Mib) Network Traffic Variables, Jun Li Aug 2004

Network Anomaly Detection Using Management Information Base (Mib) Network Traffic Variables, Jun Li

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a hierarchical, multi-tier, multiple-observation-window, network anomaly detection system (NADS) is introduced, namely, the MIB Anomaly Detection (MAD) system, which is capable of detecting and diagnosing network anomalies (including network faults and Denial of Service computer network attacks) proactively and adaptively. The MAD system utilizes statistical models and neural network classifier to detect network anomalies through monitoring the subtle changes of network traffic patterns. The process of measuring network traffic pattern is achieved by monitoring the Management Information Base (Mifi) II variables, supplied by the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) LI. The MAD system then converted each monitored …

Detection Of Denial Of Service Attacks Using Database Queries, Dmytro Zakhalyavko Aug 2004

Detection Of Denial Of Service Attacks Using Database Queries, Dmytro Zakhalyavko

Theses

In the current intrusion detection world, most intrusion detection systems output data into flat files. This project was conducted in order to improve intrusion detection data and alerts by writing them into a database system and analyzing them with SQL. A database plug-in was developed that helps to transition the data from an intrusion detection system to a database. Storing, analyzing, categorizing, and accessing data are major advantages and reasons for using databases in intrusion detection. Security analysts have to constantly perform the difficult task of sorting through a haystack of attack alerts, many of which turn out to be …

Phase Shifts That Accompany Total Internal Reflection At A Dielectric–Dielectric Interface, R. M.A. Azzam Aug 2004

Phase Shifts That Accompany Total Internal Reflection At A Dielectric–Dielectric Interface, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The absolute, average, and differential phase shifts that p- and s-polarized light experience in total internal reflection (TIR) at the planar interface between two transparent media are considered as functions of the angle of incidence φ. Special angles at which quarter-wave phase shifts are achieved are determined as functions of the relative refractive index N. When the average phase shift equals π/2, the differential reflection phase shift Δ is maximum, and the reflection Jones matrix assumes a simple form. For N>√3, the average and differential phase shifts are equal (hence δp=3δs) at …
