Turbo Codes For Wireless Mobile Communication Systems Applications, Moataz M. Salah
Turbo Codes For Wireless Mobile Communication Systems Applications, Moataz M. Salah
Theses and Dissertations
Research in coding theory has seen many proposals aimed at the construction of powerful codes using block and convolutional codes. Recently, a new forward error control code, known as turbo code, was introduced. This new code yields very good performance (near the Shannon limit) with relatively simple component codes and large interleavers in combination with an iterative decoding process. Among the most important applications of turbo codes are wireless mobile communication systems. A significant performance metric for this application is the minimization of end-to-end delay. In this dissertation, different ways to enhance the performance of turbo codes with short frames …

Experimentally, we show that Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)’s congestion control algorithm results in dynamic behavior similar to a stable limit cycle (attractor) when data from TCP flow into a fixed-size buffer and data is removed from the buffer at a fixed service rate. This setup represents how TCP buffers packets for transmission onto the network, with the network represented by a fixed-size buffer with a fixed service rate. The closed trajectory may vary slightly from period to period due to the discrete nature of computer systems. The size of the closed trajectory is a function of the network’s buffer size …

Building The Veco Online Community : A Model For Encouraging Novices., Michelle Williams, Janine Bowes.
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Building online networks and designing network activity is becoming central to how educators and other education-based professionals work, train others and teach students. It is only since 1995 that Internet connectivity in Australia has provided the critical mass and momentum which alters how people work, who they work with and how they learn. Thus the business of helping professional networks develop and become part of the lives of their members is uncharted territory and an area for research and development for educators in all fields. This paper shares the story of the development of an Australian Network for Vocational Education …
3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak
3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak
Faculty Publications
We compute the outside-cell interference factor of a code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system for a three-dimensional (3-D) air-to-ground (AG) "cellular-like" network consisting of a set of uniformly distributed ground base stations and airborne mobile users. The CDMA capacity is roughly inversely proportional to the outside-cell interference factor. It is shown that for the nearly free-space propagation environment of these systems, the outside-cell interference factor can be larger than that for terrestrial propagation models (as expected) and depends approximately logarithmically upon both the cell height and cell radius.

A Performance Analysis Of A Joint Lmds/ Satellite Communication Network, Ronald J. Zwickel
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research is to provide a performance analysis of a joint terrestrial/ satellite communication network. The systems of interest are the Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) terrestrial system and the proposed Teledesic satellite network. This analysis is performed using the OPNET network simulation tool. Simulations are run for twelve separate scenarios involving three factors which include: number of users, modulation type, and Quality of Service (QoS). The key metrics for characterizing simulation scenarios are the end-to-end delay, bit error rate, and average system throughput. The results obtained display the benefit of improved throughput, approximately 20 Mbps for …
Modeling And Simulation Of Communication Systems In Opnet, David M. Banker
Modeling And Simulation Of Communication Systems In Opnet, David M. Banker
Theses and Dissertations
This research aims to present accurate computer models of a communication link and a Super High Frequency (SHF) radio communication system. Network Warfare Simulation (NETWARS) is a J-6 initiative aimed at modeling all communication traffic in the Department of Defense (DoD) for testing and analysis of specific real world scenarios. The AN/TSC-94 is a SHF radio system with satellite communication capabilities. The AN/TSC-94 incorporates a Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio link for certain Anti-Jam (AJ) features. A DSSS spreads' signal power over a large bandwidth, reducing power previously concentrated within the original system bandwidth. The simulations were performed using …

Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel
Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel
Theses
Security is a factor which decides upon the applicability of distributed applications. Therefore this thesis deals with security in distributed systems. The complexity of the existing distributed technologies makes it necessary to reduce the number of distributed technologies considered in this thesis, i.e. concentrating on: Java, Mobile Agents and CORBA, where only Java-based mobile agents will be considered.
After a short review of basic security principles including firewalls, existing security problems in the above mentioned distributed technologies are analysed. Additional generic problems in distributed systems are outlined.
Solutions are referring to two different areas: those regarding security problems with firewalls …

Multicast Services For Multimedia Collaborative Applications, Emad Eldin Mohamed Mohamed
Multicast Services For Multimedia Collaborative Applications, Emad Eldin Mohamed Mohamed
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
This work aims at providing multicast services for multimedia collaborative applications over large inter-networks such as the Internet. Multimedia collaborative applications are typically of small group size, slow group membership dynamics, and awareness of participants' identities and locations. Moreover, they usually consist of several components such as audio, video, shared whiteboard, and single user application sharing engines that collectively help make the collaboration session successful. Each of these components has its demands from the communication layer that may differ from one component to another. This dissertation identifies the overall characteristics of multimedia collaborative applications and their individual components. It also …
Development Of Self-Adaptive Back Propagation And Derivative Free Training Algorithms In Artificial Neural Networks, Shamsuddin Ahmed
Development Of Self-Adaptive Back Propagation And Derivative Free Training Algorithms In Artificial Neural Networks, Shamsuddin Ahmed
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Three new iterative, dynamically self-adaptive, derivative-free and training parameter free artificial neural network (ANN) training algorithms are developed. They are defined as self-adaptive back propagation, multi-directional and restart ANN training algorithms. The descent direction in self-adaptive back propagation training is determined implicitly by a central difference approximation scheme, which chooses its step size according to the convergence behavior of the error function. This approach trains an ANN when the gradient information of the corresponding error function is not readily available. The self- adaptive variable learning rates per epoch are determined dynamically using a constrained interpolation search. As a result, appropriate …
Bandwidth Management And Quality Of Service, Adalbert Engel
Bandwidth Management And Quality Of Service, Adalbert Engel
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
With the advent of bandwidth-hungry video and audio applications, demand for bandwidth is expected to exceed supply. Users will require more bandwidth and, as always, there are likely to be more users. As the Internet user base becomes more diverse, there is an increasing perception that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should be able to differentiate between users, so that the specific needs of different types of users can be met. Differentiated services is seen as a possible solution to the bandwidth problem. Currently, however, the technology used on the Internet differentiates neither between users, nor between applications. The thesis focuses …

A meeting was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 21-22, 1999, to generate discussion and consensus about interoperability of publicly available scholarly information archives. The invitees represented several well known e-print and report archive initiatives, as well as organizations with interests in digital libraries and the transformation of scholarly communication. The central goal of the meeting was to agree on recommendations that would make the creation of end-user services -- such as scientific search engines and linking systems -- for data originating from distributed and dissimilar archives easier. The Universal Preprint Service (UPS) Prototype was developed in preparation for …
