Deep Learning For Learning Representation And Its Application To Natural Language Processing, Shekoofeh Mokhtari Nov 2018

Deep Learning For Learning Representation And Its Application To Natural Language Processing, Shekoofeh Mokhtari

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the web evolves even faster than expected, the exponential growth of data becomes overwhelming. Textual data is being generated at an ever-increasing pace via emails, documents on the web, tweets, online user reviews, blogs, and so on. As the amount of unstructured text data grows, so does the need for intelligently processing and understanding it. The focus of this dissertation is on developing learning models that automatically induce representations of human language to solve higher level language tasks.

In contrast to most conventional learning techniques, which employ certain shallow-structured learning architectures, deep learning is a newly developed machine learning …

Recurrent Neural Network Architectures Toward Intrusion Detection, Wafaa Anani Aug 2018

Recurrent Neural Network Architectures Toward Intrusion Detection, Wafaa Anani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) show a remarkable result in sequence learning, particularly in architectures with gated unit structures such as Long Short-term Memory (LSTM). In recent years, several permutations of LSTM architecture have been proposed mainly to overcome the computational complexity of LSTM. In this dissertation, a novel study is presented that will empirically investigate and evaluate LSTM architecture variants such as Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), Bi-Directional LSTM, and Dynamic-RNN for LSTM and GRU specifically on detecting network intrusions. The investigation is designed to identify the learning time required for each architecture algorithm and to measure the intrusion prediction accuracy. …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Just as a human might struggle to interpret another human’s handwriting, a computer vision program might fail when asked to perform one task in two different domains. To be more specific, visualize a self-driving car as a human driver who had only ever driven on clear, sunny days, during daylight hours. This driver – the self-driving car – would inevitably face a significant challenge when asked to drive when it is violently raining or foggy during the night, putting the safety of its passengers in danger. An extensive understanding of the data we use to teach computer vision models – …

Deep Neural Network Architectures For Modulation Classification Using Principal Component Analysis, Sharan Ramjee, Shengtai Ju, Diyu Yang, Aly El Gamal Aug 2018

Deep Neural Network Architectures For Modulation Classification Using Principal Component Analysis, Sharan Ramjee, Shengtai Ju, Diyu Yang, Aly El Gamal

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In this work, we investigate the application of Principal Component Analysis to the task of wireless signal modulation recognition using deep neural network architectures. Sampling signals at the Nyquist rate, which is often very high, requires a large amount of energy and space to collect and store the samples. Moreover, the time taken to train neural networks for the task of modulation classification is large due to the large number of samples. These problems can be drastically reduced using Principal Component Analysis, which is a technique that allows us to reduce the dimensionality or number of features of the samples …

A Deep Learning Agent For Games With Hidden Information, Robert A. Mills Jan 2018

A Deep Learning Agent For Games With Hidden Information, Robert A. Mills

Senior Projects Spring 2018

The goal of this project is to develop an agent capable of playing a particular game at an above average human level. In order to do so we investigated reinforcement and deep learning techniques for making decisions in discrete action spaces with hidden information. The methods we used to accomplish this goal include a standard word2vec implementation, an alpha-beta minimax tree search, and an LSTM network to evaluate game states. Given just the rules of the game and a vector representation of the game states, the agent learned to play the game by competitive self play. The emergent behavior from …

Training Neural Networks To Pilot Autonomous Vehicles: Scaled Self-Driving Car, Jason Zisheng Chang Jan 2018

Training Neural Networks To Pilot Autonomous Vehicles: Scaled Self-Driving Car, Jason Zisheng Chang

Senior Projects Spring 2018

This project explores the use of deep convolutional neural networks in autonomous cars. Successful implementation of autonomous vehicles has many societal benefits. One of the main benefits is its potential to significantly reduce traffic accidents. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that human error is at fault for 93% of automotive crashes. Robust driverless vehicles can prevent many of these collisions. The main challenge in developing autonomous vehicles today is how to create a system that is able to accurately perceive and process the world around it. In 2016, NVIDIA successfully trained a deep convolutional …

Deep Learning And Localized Features Fusion For Medical Image Classification, Haidar A. Almubarak Jan 2018

Deep Learning And Localized Features Fusion For Medical Image Classification, Haidar A. Almubarak

Doctoral Dissertations

"Local image features play an important role in many classification tasks as translation and rotation do not severely deteriorate the classification process. They have been commonly used for medical image analysis. In medical applications, it is important to get accurate diagnosis/aid results in the fastest time possible.

This dissertation tries to tackle these problems, first by developing a localized feature-based classification system for medical images and using these features and to give a classification for the entire image, and second, by improving the computational complexity of feature analysis to make it viable as a diagnostic aid system in practical clinical …

On Designing An Ecg-Based Intelligent System: Utilizing The Heart’S Electrical Activity To Recognize Humans And Detect Arrhythmia, Sara Saeed Abdeldayem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is the bioelectrical signal that reflects the heart's activity. It has been extensively used as a diagnostic tool since it holds information about the cardiac health condition. However, recent researches have shown that it exhibits an inter-subject variability property. Therefore, it can be used as a biometric-based modality for either identification or verification purposes. Nevertheless, some of the challenges are faced while employing such a signal. For instance, ECG signal is prone to noise, accordingly, noise filters should be designed to remove the noise while keeping the signal properties. Moreover, factors such as medications, health condition, …
