Blockchain Design For A Secure Pharmaceutical Supply Chain, Zhe Xu
Blockchain Design For A Secure Pharmaceutical Supply Chain, Zhe Xu
Masters Theses
In the realm of pharmaceuticals, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply chain for drugs has faced significant strains. The increased demand for vaccines and therapeutics has revealed critical weaknesses in the current drug supply chain management systems. If not addressed, these challenges could lead to severe societal impacts, including the rise of counterfeit medications and diminishing trust in government authorities.
The study identified that more than the current strategies, such as the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) in the U.S., which focuses on unique authentication and traceability codes for prescription drugs, is needed to …
Improving The Programmability Of Networked Energy Systems, Noman Bashir
Improving The Programmability Of Networked Energy Systems, Noman Bashir
Doctoral Dissertations
Global warming and climate change have underscored the need for designing sustainable energy systems. Sustainable energy systems, e.g., smart grids, green data centers, differ from the traditional systems in significant ways and present unique challenges to system designers and operators. First, intermittent renewable energy resources power these systems, which break the notion of infinite, reliable, and controllable power supply. Second, these systems come in varying sizes, spanning over large geographical regions. The control of these dispersed and diverse systems raises scalability challenges. Third, the performance modeling and fault detection in sustainable energy systems is still an active research area. Finally, …
Resource Allocation In Distributed Service Networks, Nitish Kumar Panigrahy
Resource Allocation In Distributed Service Networks, Nitish Kumar Panigrahy
Doctoral Dissertations
The past few years have witnessed significant growth in the use of distributed network analytics involving agile code, data and computational resources. In many such networked systems, for example, Internet of Things (IoT), a large number of smart devices, sensors, processing and storage resources are widely distributed in a geographic region. These devices and resources distributed over a physical space are collectively called a distributed service network. Efficient resource allocation in such high performance service networks remains one of the most critical problems. In this thesis, we model and optimize the allocation of resources in a distributed service network. This …

Wideband is a booming technology in the field of wireless communications. The receivers in wideband communication systems are expected to cover a very wide spectrum and adaptively extract the parts of interest. The literature has focused on mixing the input spectrum to baseband using a pseudorandom sequence modulation and recovering the received signals from linearly independent measurements by parallel branches to mitigate the pressures from required extreme high sampling frequency. However, a pseudorandom sequence provides no rejection for the strong interferers received together with weak signals from distant sources. The interferers cause significant distortion due to the nonlinearity of the …
Fundamental Limits Of Covert Communication In Packet Channels, Ramin Soltani
Fundamental Limits Of Covert Communication In Packet Channels, Ramin Soltani
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on covert communication in channels where the communication takes place by the transmission of packets. Consider a channel where authorized transmitter Jack sends packets to authorized receiver Steve according to a Poisson process with rate $\lambda$ packets per second for a time period $T$. Jack's transmitted packet visit Alice, Willie, Bob and Steve, respectively. Suppose that covert transmitter Alice wishes to communicate information to covert receiver Bob without being detected by a watchful adversary Willie. We consider three sets of assumptions for this channel. For each set of assumptions, we present a technique for establishing covert communication …
Hybrid Black-Box Solar Analytics And Their Privacy Implications, Dong Chen
Hybrid Black-Box Solar Analytics And Their Privacy Implications, Dong Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
The aggregate solar capacity in the U.S. is rising rapidly due to continuing decreases in the cost of solar modules. For example, the installed cost per Watt (W) for residential photovoltaics (PVs) decreased by 6X from 2009 to 2018 (from $8/W to $1.2/W), resulting in the installed aggregate solar capacity increasing 128X from 2009 to 2018 (from 435 megawatts to 55.9 gigawatts). This increasing solar capacity is imposing operational challenges on utilities in balancing electricity's real-time supply and demand, as solar generation is more stochastic and less predictable than aggregate demand. To address this problem, both academia and utilities have …
Energy Agile Cluster Communication, Muhammad Zain Mustafa
Energy Agile Cluster Communication, Muhammad Zain Mustafa
Masters Theses
Computing researchers have long focused on improving energy-efficiency?the amount of computation per joule? under the implicit assumption that all energy is created equal. Energy however is not created equal: its cost and carbon footprint fluctuates over time due to a variety of factors. These fluctuations are expected to in- tensify as renewable penetration increases. Thus in my work I introduce energy-agility a design concept for a platform?s ability to rapidly and efficiently adapt to such power fluctuations. I then introduce a representative application to assess energy-agility for the type of long-running, parallel, data-intensive tasks that are both common in data …
Asymptotic Analysis Of Random Wireless Networks: Broadcasting, Secrecy, And Hybrid Networks, Cagatay Capar
Asymptotic Analysis Of Random Wireless Networks: Broadcasting, Secrecy, And Hybrid Networks, Cagatay Capar
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis work is concerned with communication in large random wireless ad hoc networks. We mathematically model the wireless network as a collection of randomly located nodes, and explore how its performance scales as the network size increases. In particular, we study three important properties: broadcasting ability, rate of information exchange, and secret communication capability. In addition, we study connectivity properties of large random graphs in a more general context, where the graph does not necessarily represent a wireless communication network. Broadcasting, i.e., delivering a message from a single node to the entire network in a wireless ad hoc network …

What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and discount …
Design Of An Open-Source Sata Core For Virtex-4 Fpgas, Cory Gorman
Design Of An Open-Source Sata Core For Virtex-4 Fpgas, Cory Gorman
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Many hard drives manufactured today use the Serial ATA (SATA) protocol to communicate with the host machine, typically a PC. SATA is a much faster and much more robust protocol than its predecessor, ATA (also referred to as Parallel ATA or IDE). Many hardware designs, including those using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), have a need for a long-term storage solution, and a hard drive would be ideal. One such design is the high-speed Data Acquisition System (DAS) created for the NASA Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission. This system utilizes a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA. Although the DAS includes a SATA …
Simulating A Universal Geocast Scheme For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Benjamin L. Bovee
Simulating A Universal Geocast Scheme For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Benjamin L. Bovee
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Recently a number of communications schemes have been proposed for Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs). One of these, the Universal Geocast Scheme (UGS) proposed by Hossein Pishro-Nik and Mohammad Nekoui, provides for a diverse variety of VANET-specific characteristics such as time-varying topology, protocol variation based on road congestion, and support for non line-of-sight communication. In this research, the UGS protocol is extended to consider inter-vehicle multi-hop connections in intersections with surrounding obstructions along with single-hop communications in an open road scenario. Since UGS is a probabilistic, repetition-based scheme, it supports the capacity-delay tradeoffs crucial for periodic safety message exchange. The …
Addressing/Exploiting Transceiver Imperfections In Wireless Communication Systems, Lihao Wang
Addressing/Exploiting Transceiver Imperfections In Wireless Communication Systems, Lihao Wang
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
This thesis consists of two research projects on wireless communication systems. In the first project, we propose a fast inphase and quadrature (I/Q) imbalance compensation technique for the analog quadrature modulators in direct conversion transmitters. The method needs no training sequence, no extra background data gathering process and no prior perfect knowledge of the envelope detector characteristics. In contrast to previous approaches, it uses points from both the linear and predictable nonlinear regions of the envelope detector to hasten convergence. We provide a least mean square (LMS) version and demonstrate that the quadrature modulator compensator converges.
In the second project, …
