The Case For Standardizing Procedural Knowledge Models For Cross-Discipline Data And System Integration, Aaron R. Byrd, David G. Tarboton Jul 2016

The Case For Standardizing Procedural Knowledge Models For Cross-Discipline Data And System Integration, Aaron R. Byrd, David G. Tarboton

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Scientifically consistent and coherent systems for model and data discovery and integration rely on a shared body of concepts that describe the data and systems. The standardization of these disciplines is critical to the effectiveness of their ability to integrate data and systems across disciplines. There is, however, a significant shortcoming with most current approaches to creating these bodies of concepts. This is that the are designed to target only one type of knowledge--propositional knowledge--and neglect the other key type of knowledge--procedural knowledge.

Procedural knowledge is at the heart of the actual process of integrating data and systems across disciplines. …

Ontology Mapping In Semantic Time Series Processing In Climate Change Prediction, Bojan Božić, Jan Peters-Anders, Gerald Schimak Jun 2014

Ontology Mapping In Semantic Time Series Processing In Climate Change Prediction, Bojan Božić, Jan Peters-Anders, Gerald Schimak

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In today's time series processing there is more and more a need for addressing diverse user groups interested in a specific domain with appropriate user tailored time series data. The complexity of time series (e.g. involved data from different data sources and/or domains, visualization and representation, etc.) is growing rapidly. As a consequence, it means that users need to find a path through the jungle of time series data. After we have presented our concepts for semantic time series filtering and enrichment of time series with meta-information and annotations (Božić et al., 2012), we are now going to present a …

A Hybrid, Integrated Iedds For The Management Of Sequencing Batch Reactors, Davide Sottara, Stefano Bragaglia, Dalila Pulcini, Paola Mello, Luca Luccarini Jun 2014

A Hybrid, Integrated Iedds For The Management Of Sequencing Batch Reactors, Davide Sottara, Stefano Bragaglia, Dalila Pulcini, Paola Mello, Luca Luccarini

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is a particular kind of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), where all treatment processes take place in a single reactor tank, according to a fixed temporal sequence. SBR offers several advantages in terms of reduced costs, minor impact and greater flexibility with respect to traditional WWTPs. However, an optimal cost/performance ratio can only be achieved if the treatment processes are continuously monitored and controlled. In this paper, we present a hybrid, distributed, knowledge-based (Intelligent) Environmental Decision Support System (IEDSS) specifically dedicated to the management of SBRs. The IEDSS is responsible for verifying, ensuring and enforcing the …

Using Semantic-Based Spatial Reclassification For Interoperable Data Management In Natura 2000 Monitoring, Simon Nieland, Niklas Moran, Birgit Kleinschmit, Michael Förster Jun 2014

Using Semantic-Based Spatial Reclassification For Interoperable Data Management In Natura 2000 Monitoring, Simon Nieland, Niklas Moran, Birgit Kleinschmit, Michael Förster

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In various fields of spatial research, semantic heterogeneity remains an unsolved problem in terms of data comparability. Interoperability of biodiversity monitoring information is especially difficult because of its thematic complexity and the high variability of acquisition methods and national differences in nomenclatures. Each EU member state must compile comprehensive information on protected areas every six years to comply with the reporting obligations of the habitats directive. Since data collection methods and interpretation manuals broadly vary by member state and manual delineation of protected areas can never be neutral, there is a need for automatized, objective methodologies for the generation of …
