Model Analysis By The Moiré Method, David D. Kick Jan 1962

Model Analysis By The Moiré Method, David D. Kick

Masters Theses

"This study presents the use of Moiré fringes for model analysis of deflections and strains. Deflection of a beam, strain in a disk, and an Influence diagram for a frame are presented as examples of uses of the Moiré method. The necessary equations for the determination of strain using the Moiré method are also derived and presented in this work"--Abstract, page v.

Circular Arch Analysis, Aylmer Pao-Sheng Cheng Jan 1962

Circular Arch Analysis, Aylmer Pao-Sheng Cheng

Masters Theses

"This work presents an analysis of a two-hinged circular arch by both the elastic theory and the deflection theory. The basic assumption made in this analysis was that the moment of inertia of the arch rib and the normal force vary as the secant of the angle with respect to the crown. The increase of maximum moment as found by the deflection theory was in the range of 30%"--Abstract, page 2.

Analysis Of Flat Plates By Reaction Distribution Method, David D. W. Yang Jan 1962

Analysis Of Flat Plates By Reaction Distribution Method, David D. W. Yang

Masters Theses

"This study was made to analyze rectangular flat plates by the method of Reaction Distribution and to compare results obtained by this method with that of other methods. The basic approach is to divide the plate into an equivalent grid system and introduce temporary supports at the intersecting joints. The results from this study shows that the Reaction Distribution method is useful in a qualitative analysis of the behavior in a plate but is less satisfactory in obtaining reliable quantitative results"--Abstract, page 2.

A Study Of Composite Beams Made To Find An Approximate Relationship Between The Top And Bottom Flange Steel Ratio, Murli U. Hasrajani Jan 1962

A Study Of Composite Beams Made To Find An Approximate Relationship Between The Top And Bottom Flange Steel Ratio, Murli U. Hasrajani

Masters Theses

"At present in building construction the use of the composite beams is not very common. The use of the concrete beams is seen in almost all construction. By using composite beams in building construction more durability and savings in cost could be achieved. This paper shows an approximate design procedure which could be followed without running a number of trials with different sections to arrive at the required one. The ratio of top flange steel to the bottom flange steel can be determined if one knows the loads, span and the depth of the beam required"--Abstract, page i.

Investigation Of Flow Rates Through A Rockfill Dam With An Internal Spillway, Jerry R. Bayless Jan 1962

Investigation Of Flow Rates Through A Rockfill Dam With An Internal Spillway, Jerry R. Bayless

Masters Theses

"Tests were performed on a model of a rockfill dam with an internal spillway for the purpose of developing a method of predicting the flow rate through the dam. The flow rate depends upon the head but is affected by the rock size and the height of the impervious core; there- fore, these factors were varied in the study. A relation for flow rate in terms of head was found for each combination of rock size and core height used and was compared to the general weir equation to find the coefficient of contraction; thus the effect of changing core …

A Comparison Of Backwater Profile Computation, Alwin Chang Hsin Young Jan 1962

A Comparison Of Backwater Profile Computation, Alwin Chang Hsin Young

Masters Theses

"Bakhmeteff's, Von Seggern's, and the Standard Step methods were chosen for a comparative study of backwater profile determinations made with the assistance of a digital computer. This study concentrated on the M-l type of curves for different kind of prismatic channels; i.e. rectangular, trapezoidal, and parabolic channels. From the results obtained by each method for different channels, the consistency between the several methods and their applicability to all shapes of channel had been studied. Also the effect of the number of reaches used in flow profile determinations, the effect of the use of an average value of (1-ß), hydraulic exponents …

Velocity Distribution Induced By Free Jet Impact On A Stilling Basin, Sedat Özkol Jan 1962

Velocity Distribution Induced By Free Jet Impact On A Stilling Basin, Sedat Özkol

Masters Theses

"At present, the use of the free jet impacting on a stilling basin as an energy dissipator is not very common, as there is very little information available concerning this particular field. However, if conditions are favorable, this type of energy dissipator will be quite economical to construct.

In this paper it was found that the hydraulic behavior of the free jet impacting on a stilling basin can be determined to a degree which may be considered accurate for practical purposes. It was also shown that given the free jet velocity, the magnitudes of the velocities at the critical points …

Shear Stress Distribution In Haunched Beam Models, Manyu K. Mehta Jan 1962

Shear Stress Distribution In Haunched Beam Models, Manyu K. Mehta

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis has been to give the distribution of shear stress inside a haunch. A haunch is generally provided to relieve high stress concentrations at the face of the column. However the nature of shear stress distribution inside the haunch is not known.

This stress distribution was determined from a photo- elastic study on a CR-39 model. It is noted that the haunch reduces the stress concentration at the face of the column but at the same time somewhere near the point where the haunch meets the beam there is a high stress concentration.

Shear stress changes …

Effect Of The Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids Concentration On The Treatment Of Dairy Wastes By Activated Sludge Process, Meredith Hambleton Saxer Jan 1962

Effect Of The Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids Concentration On The Treatment Of Dairy Wastes By Activated Sludge Process, Meredith Hambleton Saxer

Masters Theses

"The effect of the mixed liquor suspended solids concentration on the treatment of dairy wastes by the activated sludge process was investigated to provide original and basic information of value to the waste water treatment field.

The studies were conducted using a continuous flow activated sludge laboratory unit. Two different synthetic dairy waste systems were used in this investigation, the 0.05 Percent Skim Milk Waste System and the 0.1 Percent Skim Milk Waste System. These wastes provided BOD loadings of 43.9 and 91.1 lb. BOD per day per 1000 cu. ft., respectively, at the 12 hour detention period employed. Mixed …

The Effect Of A Continuous Low Temperature On The Operation Of Waste Stabilization Lagoons, Ralston Kennedy Dennis Jan 1962

The Effect Of A Continuous Low Temperature On The Operation Of Waste Stabilization Lagoons, Ralston Kennedy Dennis

Masters Theses

"This study was undertaken to determine the effect of a continuous low temperature on the operation of a waste stabilization lagoon and to provide information of value to the sewage treatment field.

The investigation was conducted using two experimental lagoons subjected to a continuous illumination of 550 to 600 foot candles emitted by two fluorescent light fixtures. Of these units, the Cold Room Lagoon was maintained at a controlled temperature of 5° C. and the Warm Room Lagoon was operated at room temperature in the range of 16 to 32° C.

Dissolved oxygen and biochemical oxygen demand determinations were the …

Study Of The Design Of Reinforcement For Prestressed Concrete And Blocks, Charles Robert Hoffman Jan 1962

Study Of The Design Of Reinforcement For Prestressed Concrete And Blocks, Charles Robert Hoffman

Masters Theses

"This thesis is an analysis of the transverse tensile stress condition in an end block of a prestressed concrete beam. A stress analysis was made by photoelasticity and compared to the mathematical solutions and experimental solutions performed by others on concrete models. The photoelastic model was made from a piece of Columbia Resin, 39.

Whatever method is chosen to determine the stress condition, there is no exact code that can be established to fit the various type problems which arise"--Abstract, page 1.

A Study Of Small Watersheds Within The State Of Missouri, Terence E. Harbaugh Jan 1962

A Study Of Small Watersheds Within The State Of Missouri, Terence E. Harbaugh

Masters Theses

"The present status of data from watersheds in the under 10 square mile drainage area classification, pages much to be desired. However, this study of 45 small watersheds within the State of Missouri gives an indication that surface runoff from these basins may be predicted with a fair degree of accuracy. The inclusion of a shape factor AL2 and its use as a portion of the "basin index" (AL2S1/2) gives accurate results as a predictor of the "mean annual flood". The mean annual flood may be adequately computed by the formula, MAF = 113(AL2 …
