Biodegradation Of Hexachlorocyclohexane In Sand And Wastewater Using Immobilized Phanerochaete Chrysosporum, Ajaykumar C. Gami

Theses

The present study was carried out in order to assess the ability of Phanerochaete chysosporium to degrade lindane (hexachlorocyclohexane) in sand as well as in water. It was found that the fungus is immobilized on saw dust, it is able to degrade lindane in a packed-bed reactor configuration, with a first-order rate constant of 0.00066min-1. The fungus is also able to degrade lindane in sand. As with the packed-bed reactor, a supplemental carbon source (glucose) is required. In this study it was found that a glucose concentration of 20 gm/kg of sand, and 40% w/w moisture content, give …

Preparation And Testing Of Novel Blocked Isocyanate Dental Adhesives Based Upon Hydroxyhexylmethacrylate, Yunwen Ye Dec 1990

Preparation And Testing Of Novel Blocked Isocyanate Dental Adhesives Based Upon Hydroxyhexylmethacrylate, Yunwen Ye

Theses

A new kind of dental adhesive, O-Chlorophenol-TDI-HEMA-Pentaerythritol (TDI), was studied under long term conditions. The test was done in human third molar teeth which had been extracted 7 days to 6 months. Both citric acid and non citric acid pre-treatments were used on dentin surfaces. Based on Causton's[9] mineralizing solution pre-treatment method, we have used 3 kinds of mineralizing solutions, ITS, 0.5% CaCl2, NaF, as pre-treatment solutions. There were no significant differences between the citric acid and non citric acid pre-treatment. The ITS mineralizing solution pre-treatment caused a large increase in bond strength. The average bond strength of 1791 psi …

Method Of Processing Superconducting Materials And Its Products, Kenji Okazaki, Robert J. De Angelis, Charles E. Hamrin Jr. Dec 1990

Method Of Processing Superconducting Materials And Its Products, Kenji Okazaki, Robert J. De Angelis, Charles E. Hamrin Jr.

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

A method for fabricating relatively dense monoliths of superconducting material and relatively dense composite monoliths of superconducting material and binder material. The method includes the steps of placing the material to be processed in a die. A relatively high pressure is then applied to the material. Substantially simultaneously, an electrical discharge is applied to the material. The discharge is of a relatively high voltage and current density to provide sharp bonding while maintaining the superconducting properties of the material in the monolith product. A product fabricated by the present method is also described.

Kinetics Of Random Sequential Adsorption Of Rectangles And Line Segments, R. Dennis Vigil, Robert M. Ziff Dec 1990

Kinetics Of Random Sequential Adsorption Of Rectangles And Line Segments, R. Dennis Vigil, Robert M. Ziff

R. Dennis Vigil

Random sequential adsorption of nonoverlapping rectangles of arbitrary orientation onto a continuous plane was investigated by computer simulation. It is shown that the approach to the jamming limit of rectangles with various aspect ratios obeys the scaling law OJ - O( T) - T - 1/3. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics of rectangles approach those of line segments as the rectangle aspect ratio becomes large.

Dendrite Tip Radii In Directionally Solidified Pb-8.4-Atmospheric-Percent-Au, Surendra N. Tewari Dec 1990

Dendrite Tip Radii In Directionally Solidified Pb-8.4-Atmospheric-Percent-Au, Surendra N. Tewari

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The cell/dendrite tip radii in directionally solidified Pb-8.4at.%Au have been investigated as a function of the growth speed and thermal gradient in the liquid at the tip. Dendrite growth models are not able to predict quantitatively the tip radii and tip compositions separately because of the occurrence of thermosolutal convection during growth. However, the relationship between the destabilizing solutal gradient, the stabilizing thermal gradient and the capillarity at the tip assumed using the ''marginal stability'' criterion is supported by the experimental data.

Effect Of Refining On The Brightness Of Softwood Ctmp And Tmp Pulps, Ashok Kumar Mishra Dec 1990

Effect Of Refining On The Brightness Of Softwood Ctmp And Tmp Pulps, Ashok Kumar Mishra

Masters Theses

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of refining on the brightness of softwood chemithermomechanical (CTMP) and thermomechanical (TMP) pulps. Seven different pulps were refined using a laboratory Valley beater. Brightness, opacity, tensile index, TEA, and fines content of these pulps were determined at four different freeness levels. Scattering (s) and absorption (k) coefficients of these pulps were calculated. One-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) were applied to determine the significance of change in brightness.

Changes in s-values were significantly affected by fiber morphology of different wood species. Refining increased the k-values of the pulps. When the …

Modeling A Fuel Rich Premixed Laminar Methane Flame Oh, Ch, Nh, Cn Profiles, Including Prompt No, Md. Hasan Ul Karim Oct 1990

Modeling A Fuel Rich Premixed Laminar Methane Flame Oh, Ch, Nh, Cn Profiles, Including Prompt No, Md. Hasan Ul Karim

Theses

A detailed reaction mechanism based upon fundamental thermochemical kinetic principles has been developed to describe the concentration profiles of OH, CH, NH, CN, and NO including prompt NO radicals in laminar flow, fuel rich methane flames as well as flames doped with 700 ppm ammonia. A one dimensional laminar flat flame code which incorporated diffusion, and the detailed reaction mechanism was used to predict the radical concentration profiles from the model. These calculated values are compared to experimental data of Dean (1984).

The model consist of two reaction subsets, hydrocarbon oxidation set and an ammonia oxidation set. The reactions most …

Recycling: Separation Of Major Thermoplastics From Postconsumer Plastics Stream, Rafael A. Rodriguez Sep 1990

Recycling: Separation Of Major Thermoplastics From Postconsumer Plastics Stream, Rafael A. Rodriguez

Theses

The complete process for separating Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polypropylene (PP), Polystyrene (PS), Polyurethane (PU), and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) from a mixture of postconsumer plastics materials was presented. The driving forces considered to achieve separation were different densities and selective solubility of plastics in specific solvents.

The proposed process separates Polyurethane and Polystyrene by using aqueous solutions of different densities. On the other hand, the other five plastics are separated using solvents.

Diagrams showing streams and plastics separation in each unit were discussed. Individual material balances for each step were performed for a …

Tests For Positive Jumps In The Intensity Of A Poisson Process: A Power Study, Max Engelhardt, James M. Guffey, F. T. Wright Aug 1990

Tests For Positive Jumps In The Intensity Of A Poisson Process: A Power Study, Max Engelhardt, James M. Guffey, F. T. Wright

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tests are considered for the hypothesis of a constant intensity against the alternative of an intensity which increases with time in a nonhomogeneous Poisson process. Attention is focused on step-function alternatives and tests designed for such alternatives. One application is testing for abrupt changes in equipment following scheduled overhauls. The authors recommend the order-restricted likelihood-ratio test over an ordered chi-square test for such situations, provided the points at which jumps can occur are known. Otherwise, they recommend the test based on the Laplace statistic. The performance of these tests is evaluated for smooth alternatives, with the result that the smallest …

Mass Transfer Of Hazardous Organic Compounds In Soil Matrices Relevant To Thermal Desorption/Incineration, Jong-In Dong May 1990

Mass Transfer Of Hazardous Organic Compounds In Soil Matrices Relevant To Thermal Desorption/Incineration, Jong-In Dong

Dissertations

Soils contaminated with hazardous organic compounds have been known to threaten human health both directly through various contact mechanisms and indirectly through leaching or transfer to the food chain. Thermal desorption of contaminated soil matrices with secondary treatment of the effluent gases (collection, incineration, etc) is one of most feasible and developing technologies for cleaning of contaminated soils. There is, however, little known about the mass transfer principles of organic contaminants through the heated soil matrices. The objectives of this study is, therefore, to learn and understand details of the mass transfer processes of organic compounds in these soil matrices. …
