Life Cycle Assessment Of Air Classification As A Sulfur Mitigation Technology In Pine Residue Feedstocks, Ashlee Edmonson
Life Cycle Assessment Of Air Classification As A Sulfur Mitigation Technology In Pine Residue Feedstocks, Ashlee Edmonson
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Sulfur accumulation during biofuel production is pollutive, toxic to conversion catalysts, and causes the premature breakdown of processing equipment. Air classification is an effective preprocessing technology for ash and sulfur removal from biomass feedstocks. A life cycle assessment (LCA) sought to understand the environmental impacts of implementing air classification as a sulfur-mitigation technique for pine residues. Energy demand and material balance for preprocessing were simulated using SimaPro and the Argonne National Laboratory’s GREET model, specifically focusing on comparing the global warming potential (GWP) of grid electricity versus bioelectricity scenarios. Overall, the grid electricity scenario had a GWP impact over 7 …
Novel Tools For Analysis Of Disordered Sleep And Motor Behavior In Preclinical Models Of Disease, Dillon M. Huffman
Novel Tools For Analysis Of Disordered Sleep And Motor Behavior In Preclinical Models Of Disease, Dillon M. Huffman
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
Subtle changes in sleep architecture can accompany and be symptomatic of various diseases or disorders. Understanding the complex interactions between sleep and health requires the ability to characterize sleep, probe its underlying mechanisms through perturbation, and quantify dependent physiological outcomes. Rodent models have come to be accepted as a valuable tool for preclinical investigations. However, experimental tools to accomplish such research typically rely on laborious methods that limit throughput and flexibility. Thus, research tools that minimize workload could be of great value to the research community and expedite investigation of the underlying mechanisms of sleep and further the development of …
Machine Learning Approach For Vigilance State Classification In Mice, Anik Muhury
Machine Learning Approach For Vigilance State Classification In Mice, Anik Muhury
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Sleep has a significant impact on cognitive abilities such as memory, reaction time, productivity, and creative thinking; however, there are many aspects of this important activity that are not clearly understood. Over the last century, researchers have developed technology and animal models to assist in the study of sleep. Manual sleep scoring is time consuming, reduces productivity, and is impacted by human scorer subjectivity. On the other hand, automatic sleep stage categorization can enhance consistency and reliability, aiding professionals in identifying sleep related health problems.
In recent times various studies reported significant achievements for automatic vigilance detection and overcome the …
Interactive Clinical Event Pattern Mining And Visualization Using Insurance Claims Data, Zhenhui Piao
Interactive Clinical Event Pattern Mining And Visualization Using Insurance Claims Data, Zhenhui Piao
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
With exponential growth on a daily basis, there is potentially valuable information hidden in complex electronic medical records (EMR) systems. In this thesis, several efficient data mining algorithms were explored to discover hidden knowledge in insurance claims data. The first aim was to cluster three levels of information overload(IO) groups among chronic rheumatic disease (CRD) patient groups based on their clinical events extracted from insurance claims data. The second aim was to discover hidden patterns using three renowned pattern mining algorithms: Apriori, frequent pattern growth(FP-Growth), and sequential pattern discovery using equivalence classes(SPADE). The SPADE algorithm was found to be the …
Analysis Of Vocal Fold Kinematics Using High Speed Video, Harikrishnan Unnikrishnan
Analysis Of Vocal Fold Kinematics Using High Speed Video, Harikrishnan Unnikrishnan
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Vocal folds are the twin in-folding of the mucous membrane stretched horizontally across the larynx. They vibrate modulating the constant air flow initiated from the lungs. The pulsating pressure wave blowing through the glottis is thus the source for voiced speech production. Study of vocal fold dynamics during voicing are critical for the treatment of voice pathologies. Since the vocal folds move at 100 - 350 cycles per second, their visual inspection is currently done by strobosocopy which merges information from multiple cycles to present an apparent motion. High Speed Digital Laryngeal Imaging(HSDLI) with a temporal resolution of up to …
Detection Of Electrical Alternans In Ventricular Depolarization Phase Of Human Electrocardiogram, David R. Wasemiller
Detection Of Electrical Alternans In Ventricular Depolarization Phase Of Human Electrocardiogram, David R. Wasemiller
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
T-wave Alternans (TWA) in an electrocardiogram (ECG) has received considerable interest as a potential predictor of sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, large clinical trials have shown that while TWA has a very high negative predictive value, its positive predictive value is poor. Results of previous studies suggest that arrhythmia onset can be affected by the phase relationship of alternans of the depolarization and repolarization phase of the action potentials of the ventricles. To assess this relationship, one would first need to establish that depolarization alternans can be detected and then develop methods to determine its relationship with repolarization alternans, which …
Experimental-Computational Analysis Of Vigilance Dynamics For Applications In Sleep And Epilepsy, Farid Yaghouby
Experimental-Computational Analysis Of Vigilance Dynamics For Applications In Sleep And Epilepsy, Farid Yaghouby
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Sleep problems can cooccur with epilepsy, and adversely affect seizure diagnosis and treatment. In fact, the relationship between sleep and seizures in individuals with epilepsy is a complex one. Seizures disturb sleep and sleep deprivation aggravates seizures. Antiepileptic drugs may also impair sleep quality at the cost of controlling seizures. In general, particular vigilance states may inhibit or facilitate seizure generation, and changes in vigilance state can affect the predictability of seizures. A clear understanding of sleep-seizure interactions will therefore benefit epilepsy care providers and improve quality of life in patients. …
A Method For Non-Invasive, Automated Behavior Classification In Mice, Using Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors, Steven R. Gooch
A Method For Non-Invasive, Automated Behavior Classification In Mice, Using Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors, Steven R. Gooch
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
While all mammals sleep, the functions and implications of sleep are not well understood, and are a strong area of investigation in the research community. Mice are utilized in many sleep studies, with electroencephalography (EEG) signals widely used for data acquisition and analysis. However, since EEG electrodes must be surgically implanted in the mice, the method is high cost and time intensive. This work presents an extension of a previously researched high throughput, low cost, non-invasive method for mouse behavior detection and classification. A novel hierarchical classifier is presented that classifies behavior states including NREM and REM sleep, as well …
Independent Component Analysis Enhancements For Source Separation In Immersive Audio Environments, Yue Zhao
Independent Component Analysis Enhancements For Source Separation In Immersive Audio Environments, Yue Zhao
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
In immersive audio environments with distributed microphones, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) can be applied to uncover signals from a mixture of other signals and noise, such as in a cocktail party recording. ICA algorithms have been developed for instantaneous source mixtures and convolutional source mixtures. While ICA for instantaneous mixtures works when no delays exist between the signals in each mixture, distributed microphone recordings typically result various delays of the signals over the recorded channels. The convolutive ICA algorithm should account for delays; however, it requires many parameters to be set and often has stability issues. This thesis introduces the …
