Extensive variations of the ring structures of three deoxyaldohexopyranoses, l-fucose, d-quinovose, and l-rhamnose, and four dideoxyaldohexopyranoses, d-digitoxose, abequose, paratose, and tyvelose, were studied by energy minimization with the molecular mechanics algorithm MM3(92). Chair conformers, 4C1 ind-quinovose and the equivalent 1C4 in l-fucose and l-rhamnose, overwhelmingly dominate in the three deoxyhexoses; in the d-dideoxyhexoses, 4C1 is again dominant, but with increased amounts of 1C4 forms in the α anomers of the three 3,6-dideoxyhexoses, abequose, paratose, and tyvelose and in both α and β anomers of the 2,6-dideoxyhexose d-digitoxose. Surfactant protein D (SP-D), a C-type lectin, is an important pulmonary host defense molecule. Carbohydrate binding is critical to its host defense properties, but the precise polysaccharide structures recognized by the protein are unknown. SP-D binding toAspergillus fumigatus is strongly inhibited by a soluble β-(1→6)-linked but not by a soluble β-(1→3)-linked glucosyl homopolysaccharide (pustulan and laminarin, respectively), suggesting that SP-D recognizes only certain polysaccharide configurations, likely through differential binding to nonterminal glucosyl residues. Evaluating the in vivo accuracy of magnetic resonance phase velocity mapping (PVM) is not straightforward because of the absence of a validated clinical flow quantification technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate PVM by investigating its precision, both in vitro and in vivo, in a 1.5 Tesla scanner. Biomimetic strategies were employed to promote directional outgrowth of neurites in vitro by using a synergistic combination of physical, chemical, and cellular cues. Compression molded and solvent cast biodegradable polymer substrates made of poly(D,L-lactic acid) were micropatterned to form grooves on the substrate surfaces. Laminin was localized in the grooves, and rat sciatic Schwann cells were seeded on the substrates. Whole as well as dissociated rat dorsal root ganglia were seeded on the substrates along with Schwann cells, and neurite outgrowth and alignment were measured. Effects Of Compression Processing Parameters And Antioxidants On Molecular Degradation Of Biodegradable Poly-L-Lactide (Plla), Thomas J. Hannan Jr.

The purpose of this research was to find a combination of poly (L-lactic acid), also known as poly-L-lactide or (PLLA) and antioxidants that would, together, produce a product whose degradation rate would be advantageous for use in biodegradable medical implants. Intrinsic viscosity tests were conducted on compression molded samples of PLLA that were molded at various processing parameters in order to find optimal parameters. The optimal processing parameters were found to be time 10 minutes, temperature 220°C, and pressure 1000 psi.
