Development Of Hybrid Coating Materials To Improve The Success Of Titanium Implants, Zach Gouveia Jul 2020

Development Of Hybrid Coating Materials To Improve The Success Of Titanium Implants, Zach Gouveia

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

While titanium (Ti) and its alloys have become ubiquitous within implantology as materials to restore or augment the function of human tissues, their success is plagued by complications associated with infection and aseptic implant loosening. These two risks account for the majority of implant failures in the clinic and limit the long-term success of titanium implants in vivo. Therefore, this thesis describes the development of robust multifunctional class II organic-inorganic hybrid coating materials for titanium implants that could be used to effectively target both complications, concurrently. During this master’s work, two different coating systems were examined. First, class II …

Designing Biomimetic Implant Surfaces To Promote Osseointegration Under Osteoporotic Conditions By Revitalizing Mechanisms Coupling Bone Resorption To Formation, Ethan M. Lotz Jan 2019

Designing Biomimetic Implant Surfaces To Promote Osseointegration Under Osteoporotic Conditions By Revitalizing Mechanisms Coupling Bone Resorption To Formation, Ethan M. Lotz

Theses and Dissertations

In cases of compromised bone remodeling like osteoporosis, insufficient osseointegration occurs and results in implant failure. Implant retention relies on proper secondary fixation, which is developed during bone remodeling. This process is disrupted in metastatic bone diseases like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterized low bone mass and bone strength resulting from either accelerated osteoclast-mediated bone resorption or impaired osteoblast-mediated bone formation. These two processes are not independent phenomena. In fact, osteoporosis can be viewed as a breakdown of the cellular communication connecting bone resorption to bone formation. Because bone remodeling occurs at temporally generated specific anatomical sites and at different times, …

Engineering Surface Properties To Modulate Inflammation And Stem Cell Recruitment Through Macrophage Activation, Kelly M. Hotchkiss Jan 2018

Engineering Surface Properties To Modulate Inflammation And Stem Cell Recruitment Through Macrophage Activation, Kelly M. Hotchkiss

Theses and Dissertations

Biomaterials are becoming the most commonly used therapeutic method for treatment of lost or damaged tissue in the body. Metallic materials are chosen for high strength orthopaedic and dental applications. Titanium (Ti) implants are highly successful in young, healthy patients with the ability to fully integrate to surrounding tissue. However the main population requiring these corrective treatments will not be healthy or young, therefore further research into material modifications have been started to improve outcomes in compromised patients. The body’s immune system will generate a response to any implanted material, and control the final outcome. Among the first and most …

Bioactive Glass-Ceramic Coating Of Titanium Substrates By Alkaline Hydrothermal Process, Mohamed Gebril Jul 2015

Bioactive Glass-Ceramic Coating Of Titanium Substrates By Alkaline Hydrothermal Process, Mohamed Gebril

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Surface modification is a well-known approach to enhance the osseointegration of titanium dental implants. In this study, a novel hydrothermal method for coating titanium surfaces with bioactive glass was developed. Our method included sol-gel synthesis of bioactive glass, followed by hydrothermal coating of titanium under different NaOH concentrations. The surface properties of coated substrates were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and surface profilometry. By varying the alkalinity of the hydrothermal process, different surface topographies, crystalline phases and chemistries could be obtained. Soaking the hydrothermally coated titanium substrates in simulated body fluid resulted in hydroxyapatite …

A New Multilayer Composite With Functionally Graded Design For Endodontic Application., Ahmed A. Madfa Jul 2010

A New Multilayer Composite With Functionally Graded Design For Endodontic Application., Ahmed A. Madfa

Ahmed A. Madfa

Multilayer composite with FG structure were fabricated using zirconia (ZrO), alumina (AI2O3), Hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium (Ti) micropowders. Powder selection and their combination in each layer were according to the results of finite element analysis.

New Generation Of The Dental Posts For Endodontic Application., Ahmed A. Madfa

Ahmed A. Madfa

Fabricated multilayer dental post with the functionally graded design is a novel product that exhibits graded properties varied from coronal to apical parts of the tooth. The new dental post definitely performs better than posts available in the market and improves the quality of human life
