This project designs aircraft that addresses the space constraint that limits airport capacity by exploiting lift created by flying aircraft at high speeds (350-500KIAS) in the mid altitudes of FL100-FL200 to increase the payload of smaller aircraft. Three solutions with the length and wingspan footprint of the Boeing 737-800 are produced using the software X-Plane, then virtually flight tested for various performance data. The results find that adoption of these designs can yield significant capacity increases, albeit at reduced fuel efficiency.

The purpose of this research paper is to shed light on the feasibility and implications concerning the introduction of single-pilot operations on air transport category aircraft. As technology has been advancing over the past few decades, autonomous artificial intelligence software has started to become more popular, finding higher demands in various industries. With current issues such as the pilot shortage and raising pilot wages, airlines are looking for ways to cut down on costs and preserve a healthy work force level. One of the most contentious topics of discussion in Aviation today revolves around what many describe as the “overcrowding” of Heathrow Airport in London. According to the Air Line Pilots Association there is an acute shortage of qualified pilots willing to fly for regional air carriers due to a lack of benefits and pay (Pilot Supply and the Future of the Profession, n.d.). Many elements are involved when a pilot is trying to decide which aircraft to pursue for rental. Uninformed new pilots decide to rent purely based upon the aircraft used for initial training, but once more variables are considered, the pilot will realize such an important decision must consider all aspects. Cost typically being the greatest determining factor, horsepower output of the engine, speed, the maximum load capacity, and the maximum altitude the aircraft is able to reach also tend to have a large effect on determining which aircraft will suit the needs of the pilot.
