Drivability Of The Fiat 500 Multi-Air Engine Under Simulated Poor Maintenance, Andrew Croxell

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

The FIAT Multi-Air valve-train uses hydraulic, mechanical, and electric components to control engine intake valves for more precise combustion. However, the incorporation of electronics and hydraulics creates additional potential for drivability issues. This study will simulate poor vehicle maintenance in a FIAT 500 Multi-Air engine to identify drivability concerns generated.

We are all aware of the increasing penetration of purely automated vehicles into the coming panoply of ground transportation. Much of the test and evaluation procedures of these respective vehicles have occurred on unidirectional, multi-lane highways and freeways where the central computational problem is relatively simple longitudinal and lateral control. The increasing use of hybrid lightweight structures in the automotive industry brings new challenges in the area of multi-material boundaries. Insufficient bonding quality between two kinds of materials, especially in highly loaded structures, affects the component’s performance. Hence, it is very important to monitor the bonding quality in multi-material structures. Flat specimen, consisting of sheet steel and organic sheet layers were examined using air- coupled ultrasound transducers in reflection setup. Catalytic converters are devices attached to the exhaust system of automobile or other engines to eliminate or substantially reduce polluting emissions. They consist of coated substrates enclosed in a stainless steel housing. The substrate is typically made of ceramic honeycombs; however stainless steel foil honeycombs are also used. The coating is usually a slurry of alumina, silica, rare earth oxides and platinum group metals. Many critical, highly loaded rotating gearbox components have fast crack propagation rates. Early detection of cracks in gearbox is critical to mitigating the risk of catastrophic failure. Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques have proven to be capable of continuously monitoring the crack initiation and propagation [1-3]. Due to the long distance of AE signal propagation from the AE sources to the sensors installed in the housing, the AE signal suffers from severe attenuation and noises.
