Exposure to research is known to play a positive role in undergraduate education. However, robust research responsibilities are oftentimes not formally incorporated into a student’s academic experience until master level studies. Further, a variety of intimidation factors often inhibit many undergraduate students from participating on a research team. In this case study, the research team evaluated a unique group of undergraduate researchers who matriculated to the same university after beginning to participate in research as concurrently enrolled students. There is a shortage of literature investigating access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for Black student-athletes who pursue careers in engineering or a related field in STEM. Particularly, individuals who participate in non-revenue generating sports. This narrative inquiry explores the experiences of six (6) Black student-athletes (two male, four female) pursuing degrees in engineering or a related field in STEM, while participating in soccer and lacrosse at their respective institutions. Through personal narratives, the authors critically analyze Black STEM student-athletes’ access to college preparatory courses and STEM camps. Findings and recommendations are discussed.

A mid-sized private university in the Southeast has created an experimental first-year engineering course based on the Wright State Model for Engineering Mathematics Education. The course aims to increase student retention, motivation and success in engineering through an application-oriented, hands-on introduction to engineering mathematics. When compared to the traditional Wright State Model for Engineering Mathematics Education, the new course also focused on student communication (written, oral), teamwork, self-regulated learning and professionalism. The new experimental course also uses more frequent and formative assessment techniques. This poster summarizes findings and offers recommendations from a research study involving Black males who majored in engineering or a related STEM field and played a collegiate sport. Specifically, the poster highlights ways in which the research participants were able to transition from playing sports to pursuing an engineering or related STEM career. Diverse people and perspectives are needed to spur innovation and tackle societal problems. A wealth of untapped intellectual and economic potential exists among historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups –including Blacks and Latinos–who have not had equitable access to engineering and related STEM fields. In high-demand fields like science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), more success strategies are needed to effectively recruit and retain college students. One-size fits-all approaches (i.e., those that are supposed to work for all students) often neglect the unique needs of underrepresented populations. Although research has shown that involvement is a helpful predictor of students’ future success, underrepresented minorities (i.e., African Americans and Hispanics) face unique obstacles at predominantly White institutions, which limit their engagement in educationally purposeful activities. Survey data from a 2007 administration of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) were analyzed to measure African American and Hispanic students’ engagement in educationally purposeful activities. Results from the present study found that student satisfaction in college is positively related to time spent preparing for class and frequency of interactions with faculty members about careers. Historically underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities (i.e. African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans) have experienced barriers to their success in engineering and related STEM fields. These student populations have had lower degree attainment rates, switch to non-STEM majors more frequently, and experience unique social challenges when compared to White and Asian Pacific Islander counterparts. To examine these findings, nearly 50 interviews were conducted and analyzed in the present study to better understand the academic and social experiences of African American and Latino American men in these fields. Despite this goal, little is known about value development in undergraduate engineering education.
