Molten Carbonates As An Effective Oxygen Reduction Catalyst For 550–650°C Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yunhui Gong, Xue Li, Lingling Zhang, Whitney Tharp, Changyong Qin, Kevin Huang

We report the first study that investigates the use of molten carbonates as an effective catalyst to promote electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). A series of binary Li-K carbonate compositions were incorporated into the porous backbones of a commercial cathode assembled in symmetrical impedance cells for electrochemical characterization. Within the temperature range of 550–650◦C, we observed that the polarization and ohmic area-specific resistances of the original sample can be significantly reduced by the introduction of molten carbonates. A new ORR charge-transfer model involving two intermediate species CO5 2− and …

A flow of carriers along the c axis is extremely sensitive to the orientation of an in-plane magnetic field due to in-plane mass anisotropy in layered compounds. Based on this mechanism, a rotatable in-plane magnetic field has been applied as a valley valve to tune the contribution of each valley in p-type Sb2Te3 bulk single crystals to the total conductivity and interlayer magnetoresistance (MR). A valley-polarized current is generated, and the angular-dependent interlayer MR of up to 160% represents strong anisotropy. There are six inequivalent peaks over all temperature and magnetic field ranges. The giant MR results …

We explored the orbital structure of FeTiO3 with polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectra complemented with electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure, near the bottom of conduction band, is composed of O 2p and Ti 3d orbitals. Ti 3d/4p hybridization dominantly lies on the ab plane. The highly delocalized Ti 4p orbital might hybridize with O 2p orbital and even extend to the next-neighbor Fe atom whereby establishing a linear orbital combination of Ti-O-Fe. A clear picture of the orbital construction in FeTiO3 will help to elucidate the paths of pressure-induced charge transfer and other physical or magnetic characteristics.

Dual-Pump Dual-Broadband Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering In Reacting Flows, Sukesh Roy, Terrence R. Meyer, Robert P. Lucht, Mikael Afzelius, Per-Erik Bengtsson, James R. Gord

A dual-pump, dual-broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering system for simultaneous measurements of temperature and concentrations of N2, O2, and CO2 in reacting f lows is demonstrated. In this system pure rotational transitions of N2 O2 and rovibrational transitions of N2 CO2 are probed simultaneously with two narrowband pump beams, a broadband pump beam, and a broadband Stokes beam. The main advantage of this technique is that it permits accurate temperature measurements at both low and high temperatures as well as concentration measurements of three molecules.
