A Thermodynamic Framework For The Modeling And Optimization Of Crystallization Processes, David John Widenski
A Thermodynamic Framework For The Modeling And Optimization Of Crystallization Processes, David John Widenski
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Crystallization is a widely used chemical engineering separation unit operation process. Since this technique can produce high purity products it is used for the industrial production of many chemical compounds, such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fine chemicals. The production of these products is a multi-million dollar industry. Any methods to improve the production of these products would be highly valued. Thus, the main objective of this work is to target model-based optimal strategies for crystallization operations specifically targeting crystal size and crystal size distribution (CSD). In particular, take the knowledge gained and translate it into an economically and practically feasible …
Feasibility Analysis Of Estrification Systems With Entrainers, Kang Wook Lee
Feasibility Analysis Of Estrification Systems With Entrainers, Kang Wook Lee
Dissertations and Theses
(Ethyl Acetate) and IPA (Isopropyl Acetate) production systems are studied in terms of the feasibility analysis. It is not feasible to retrieve pure products by a simple reactive distillation for IPA production system because CCR (Critical Composition Region) covers the entire desired binary edge for IPA system. On the other hand, even though CCR does not cover the entire desired binary edge of the EA system completely, internal reflux ratio (IRR) analysis does not allow the production of the pure product via reactive distillation for EA production system. To overcome the restraints, external entrainers are utilized to take advantage of …
Optimizing Reservoir-Stream-Aquifer Interactions For Conjunctive Use And Hydropower Production, Hala Fayad, Richard C. Peralta, Ali Forghani
Optimizing Reservoir-Stream-Aquifer Interactions For Conjunctive Use And Hydropower Production, Hala Fayad, Richard C. Peralta, Ali Forghani
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Conjunctive management of water resources involves coordinating use of surface water and groundwater resources. Very few simulation/optimization (S-O) models for stream-aquifer system management have included detailed interactions between groundwater, streams, and reservoir storage. This paper presents an S-O model doing that via artificial neural network simulators and genetic algorithm optimizer for multiobjective conjunctive water use problems. The model simultaneously addresses all significant flows including reservoir-stream-diversion-aquifer interactions in a more detailed manner than previous models. The model simultaneously maximizes total water provided and hydropower production. A penalty function implicitly poses constraints on state variables. The model effectively finds feasible optimal solutions …
An Optimization Approach To Indoor Location Problem Based On Received Signal Strength, Lei Zheng
An Optimization Approach To Indoor Location Problem Based On Received Signal Strength, Lei Zheng
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This research was motivated by the desire of a Fortune 100 retail company to track its customers' behaviors through the implementation of a low-cost indoor location system using received signal devices. Indoor location through received signal strength (RSS) is of low costs, yet it suffers from poor accuracy due to lack of direct line-of-sight, multi-path ratio propagation, and various interferences. To improve its location estimation accuracy, therefore, we propose a mathematical programming based propagation approach for RSS based location systems. The core of our approach is an optimization model that minimizes the sum of squared errors of signal strength. In …
Optimization Of A Low Reynold's Number 2-D Inflatable Airfoil Section, Todd A. Johansen
Optimization Of A Low Reynold's Number 2-D Inflatable Airfoil Section, Todd A. Johansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A stand-alone genetic algorithm (GA) and an surrogate-based optimization (SBO) combined with a GA were compared for accuracy and performance. Comparisons took place using the Ackley Function and Rastrigin's Function, two functions with multiple local maxima and minima that could cause problems for more traditional optimization methods, such as a gradient-based method. The GA and SBO with GA were applied to the functions through a fortran interface and it was found that the SBO could use the same number of function evaluations as the GA and achieve at least 5 orders of magnitude greater accuracy through the use of surrogate …
Comparative Study On Posture And Its Influences On Horizontal Ground Reaction Forces Generated By Muscles: Implications For Crouch Gait, Hoa Xuan Hoang
Comparative Study On Posture And Its Influences On Horizontal Ground Reaction Forces Generated By Muscles: Implications For Crouch Gait, Hoa Xuan Hoang
Masters Theses
Crouch gait decreases walking efficiency due to the increased knee and hip flexion during the stance phase of gait. Crouch gait is generally considered to be disadvantageous for patients with cerebral palsy; however, a crouched posture may afford biomechanical advantages that lead some patients to adopt a crouch gait.
To investigate one possible advantage of crouch gait, a musculoskeletal model created in OpenSim was placed in 15 different postures from upright to severe crouch during initial, middle, and final stance of the gait cycle. A series of optimizations were performed for each posture to maximize ground reaction forces for the …

Comet: Constrained Optimization Of Multiple-Dimensions For Efficient Trajectories, Michael Curt Conrad
Master's Theses
The paper describes the background and concepts behind a master’s thesis platform known as COMET (Constrained Optimization of Multiple-dimensions for Efficient Trajectories) created for mission designers to determine and evaluate suitable interplanetary trajectories. This includes an examination of the improvements to the global optimization algorithm, Differential Evolution, through a cascading search space pruning method and decomposition of optimization parameters. Results are compared to those produced by the European Space Agency’s Advanced Concept Team’s Multiple Gravity Assist Program. It was found that while discrepancies in the calculation of ΔV’s for flyby maneuvers exist between the two programs, COMET showed a noticeable …
Automated Flow Path Design Optimization Using Mesh Morphing, William Dennis Gough
Automated Flow Path Design Optimization Using Mesh Morphing, William Dennis Gough
Theses and Dissertations
The use of CAD models and CFD analysis has become an essential part of fluid flow design. To reduce the time spent determining a design, optimization frameworks have been implemented to automate the process. Mesh morphing has been implemented within these frameworks to further reduce the time needed. While optimization methods have been developed to optimize a fluid flow path, the optimum design needs to be recreated in a CAD model. A method has been developed which eliminates the need to recreate the optimal results in CAD. This is accomplished by using mesh morphing, CAD and CFD together in an …

Improving Cardiovascular Stent Design Using Patient-Specific Models And Shape Optimization, Timothy J. Gundert
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Stent geometry influences local hemodynamic alterations (i.e. the forces moving blood through the cardiovascular system) associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is frequently used to quantify stent-induced hemodynamic disturbances, but previous CFD studies have relied on simplified device or vascular representations. Additionally, efforts to minimize stent-induced hemodynamic disturbances using CFD models often only compare a small number of possible stent geometries. This thesis describes methods for modeling commercial stents in patient-specific vessels along with computational techniques for determining optimal stent geometries that address the limitations of previous studies.
An efficient and robust method was developed for virtually …

Engineering Modeling, Analysis And Optimal Design Of Custom Foot Orthotic, Lieselle Enid Trinidad
Open Access Dissertations
This research details a procedure for the systematic design of custom foot orthotics based on simulation models and their validation through experimental and clinical studies. These models may ultimately be able to replace the use of empirical tables for designing custom foot orthotics and enable optimal design thicknesses based on the body weight and activities of end-users. Similarly, they may facilitate effortless simulation of various orthotic and loading conditions, changes in material properties, and foot deformities by simply altering model parameters. Finally, these models and the corresponding results may also form the basis for subsequent design of a new generation …
Analytical Comparison Of Multimicrophone Probes In Measuring Acoustic Intensity, Curtis P. Wiederhold
Analytical Comparison Of Multimicrophone Probes In Measuring Acoustic Intensity, Curtis P. Wiederhold
Theses and Dissertations
In the late 1970s, a method was developed to estimate acoustic intensity in one dimension by taking the cross-spectral density of two closely-spaced microphone signals. Since then, multimicrophone probes have been developed to measure three-dimensional intensity as well as energy density. Their usefulness has led to the design of various types of multimicrophone probes, the most common being the four-microphone orthogonal, the four-microphone regular tetrahedron, and the six-microphone designs. These designs generally either consist of microphones suspended in space near each other or mounted on the surface of a sphere. This work analytically compares the relative merits of each probe …

Unit Commitment Methods To Accommodate High Levels Of Wind Generation, Alexander Charles Melhorn
Masters Theses
The United State’s renewable portfolio standards call for a large increase of renewable energy and improved conservation efforts over today’s current system. Wind will play a ma jor role in meeting the renewable portfolio standards. As a result, the amount of wind capacity and generation has been growing exponentially over the past 10 to 15 years. The proposed unit commitment method integrates wind energy into a scheduable resource while keeping the formulation simple using mixed integer programming. A reserve constraint is developed and added to unit commitment giving the forecasted wind energy an effective cost. The reserve constraint can be …

Analytical Modeling And Optimization Of A Thermoelectric Heat Conversion System Operating Betweeen Fluid Streams, Stephen H. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Analytical, closed-form solutions governing thermoelectric behavior are derived. An analytical model utilizing a thermal circuit is presented involving heat transfer into, through, out of, and around a thermoelectric device. A nondimensionalization of the model is presented. Linear heat transfer theory is applied to the model to obtain a series of closed form equations predicting net power output for the thermoelectric device. Fluid streams flowing through shrouded heat sinks with square pin fins are considered for the thermal pathways to and from the device. Heat transfer and pressure drop are characterized in a manner conducive to an analytical model using previously …

Theoretical Explanation Of Bernstein Polynomials' Efficiency: They Are Optimal Combination Of Optimal Endpoint-Related Functions, Jaime Nava, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many applications of interval computations, it turned out to be beneficial to represent polynomials on a given interval [x-, x+] as linear combinations of Bernstein polynomials (x- x - )k * (x+ - x)n-k. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for this empirical success: namely, we show that under reasonable optimality criteria, Bernstein polynomials can be uniquely determined from the requirement that they are optimal combinations of optimal polynomials corresponding to the interval's endpoints.

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The application of traditional approaches to the design of efficient facilities can be tedious and time consuming when uncertainty and a number of constraints exist. Queuing models and mathematical programming techniques are not able to capture the complex interaction between resources, the environment and space constraints for dynamic stochastic processes. In the following study discrete event simulation is applied to the facility planning process for a grain delivery terminal. The discrete event simulation approach has been applied to studies such as capacity planning and facility layout for a gasoline station and evaluating the resource requirements for a manufacturing facility. Precast concrete shear walls are used to resist lateral loads in low- to medium-rise buildings. An innovative joining technique is proposed to accelerate construction process and to reduce concrete damage possibility and capital loss during an earthquake event. Panels are jointed using steel anchor bolts, therefore, the system is designated "anchor-jointed precast structural wall system". In this system, anchors are utilized as a structural fuse. Damaged anchors are easily replaced after an earthquake, thus minimizing repair costs and serviceability disruptions. In the first part of this thesis, conceptual development of the system is carried out. A research program of combined …

Requirements Determination Of A Novel Non-Pneumatic Wheel Shear Beam For Low Rolling Resistance, Niranjan Thyagaraja
Requirements Determination Of A Novel Non-Pneumatic Wheel Shear Beam For Low Rolling Resistance, Niranjan Thyagaraja
All Theses
The hysteretic loss associated with cyclic shear in the elastomeric shear layer is one of the prevailing concerns for the development of a low rolling loss non-pneumatic wheel. We propose to eliminate the hysteretic losses associated with the elastomeric shear layer and thus, reduce the corresponding rolling resistance by using linear elastic materials which are inherently non-hysteretic. Since the shear modulus of a viscoelastic shear layer is less than that of an elastic material by several orders of magnitude, the challenge to achieve a low effective shear modulus shear layer with linear elastic materials directs towards the development of a …

Agent-Based Under Hood Packing, Karthik Ravindranath
All Theses
Improving vehicle performance and passenger comfort has been a prime engineering concern and focus of research for many years in automotive design. Turning to high-performance components in an effort to improve vehicle performance alone is often not enough and their placement and interactions with other components should also be an integral part of the improvement process. With the advancement in hybrid electric vehicle technology, the packing of components under the hood is ever more essential and challenging. Under hood packing is a multi-objective optimization problem with many, and mostly conflicting objectives. A non-deterministic multi-objective evolutionary algorithm needs to be integrated …

Multi-Channel Peer-To-Peer Streaming Systems As Resource Allocation Problems, Miao Wang
Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the past few years, the Internet has witnessed the success of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming technology, which has attracted millions of users. More recently, commercial P2P streaming systems have begun to support multiple channels and a user in such systems is allowed to watch more than one channel at a time. We refer to such systems as multi-channel P2P streaming systems. In this dissertation, we focus on designing multi-channel P2P streaming systems with the goal of providing optimal streaming quality for all channels, termed as system-wide optimal streaming quality. Specifically, we design the systems from the perspective of how to …

Fitting Model Parameters To Patient Data Automatically Through Evolutionary Computation, Michael Wesley Sagan
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Engineering Center (O.R.E.C) has been studying two conditions which can wreak havoc on the human body's balance control system. The conditions being studied are cerebral palsy (CP) and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. A greater understanding of postural deficits in children with these conditions and the causes for these conditions may help researchers achieve better interventions and treatments [3]. A tool used to characterize postural stability is a bi-planar postural stability model. This model is designed where 10 parameter values have to be adjusted until the simulated data is statistically the same …

Natural Gas As Petroleum Fuel Substitution: Analysis Of Supply-Demand Projections, Infrastructures, Investments And End-User Prices, Abdul Qoyum Tjandranegara, Arsegianto Arsegianto, Widodo Wahyu Purwanto
Makara Journal of Technology
The petroleum fuels (PF) subsidy has long burdens the government spending, and discourages less expensive energy usage such as natural gas (NG). Exporting NG and importing the more expensive PF products cause financial losses to Indonesia. The lack of NG infrastructure is the main hurdle in maximizing domestic NG usage and so does the perception of its high investment costs burdening government spending and pushing the NG transportation cost up. This study calculates the required NG infrastructure and its investments for several levels of PF substitutions up to 2030. To balance the NG demands, the supply from each field and …
A Method To Improve The Sustainment Of Systems Based On Probability And Consequences, Michael Ashton Gaintner
A Method To Improve The Sustainment Of Systems Based On Probability And Consequences, Michael Ashton Gaintner
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The FROST Method is presented which improves the efficiency of long-term sustainment of hardware systems. The FROST Method makes sustainment and scheduling decisions based on the minimization of the expected value of current and future costs. This differs from current methods which tend to base decisions not on the expected value of costs, but on the expected inventory demand found through projections using data which is often inaccurate.
Distributions are used to account for randomness and inaccuracy in inputs such as failure rates and vendor-claimed dates for end of production. A Monte Carlo technique is then used to convert these …

Jamming-Aware Traffic Allocation For Multiple-Path Routing Using Portfolio Selection, Patrick Tague, Sidharth Nabar, James Ritcey, Radha Poovendran
Patrick Tague
Multiple-path source routing protocols allow a data source node to distribute the total traffic among available paths. In this article, we consider the problem of jamming-aware source routing in which the source node performs traffic allocation based on empirical jamming statistics at individual network nodes. We formulate this traffic allocation as a lossy network flow optimization problem using portfolio selection theory from financial statistics. We show that in multi-source networks, this centralized optimization problem can be solved using a distributed algorithm based on decomposition in network utility maximization (NUM). We demonstrate the network’s ability to estimate the impact of jamming …
Space Trajectories Optimization Using Variable-Chromosome-Length Genetic Algorithms, Ahmed H. Gad
Space Trajectories Optimization Using Variable-Chromosome-Length Genetic Algorithms, Ahmed H. Gad
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The problem of optimal design of a multi-gravity-assist space trajectories, with free number of deep space maneuvers (MGADSM) poses multi-modal cost functions. In the general form of the problem, the number of design variables is solution dependent. To handle global optimization problems where the number of design variables varies from one solution to another, two novel genetic-based techniques are introduced: hidden genes genetic algorithm (HGGA) and dynamic-size multiple population genetic algorithm (DSMPGA).
In HGGA, a fixed length for the design variables is assigned for all solutions. Independent variables of each solution are divided into effective and ineffective (hidden) genes. Hidden …
