Strengthening Urban Resilience: Understanding The Interdependencies Of Outer Space And Strategic Planning For Sustainable Smart Environments, Ulpia-Elena Botezatu, Olga Bucovetchi, Adrian V. Gheorghe, Radu D. Stanciu

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The conventional approach to urban planning has predominantly focused on horizontal dimensions, disregarding the potential risks originating from outer space. This paper aims to initiate a discourse on the vertical dimension of cities, which is influenced by outer space, as an essential element of strategic urban planning. Through an examination of a highly disruptive incident in outer space involving a collision between the Iridium 33 and Cosmos 2251 satellites, this article elucidates the intricate interdependencies between urban areas and outer space infrastructure and services. Leveraging the principles of critical infrastructure protection, which bridge the urban and outer space domains, and …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: For the difficulty of integrating heterogeneous resource and low reuse rate by task-oriented development model in the traditional electronic information system, this article proposes a service-oriented simulation software constructing method. By information registration, publication, subscription, distribution and other network-centric core services to build a global service bus for dynamic scheduling, we can improve information sharing capabilities. By the standard descriptions and specifications, we can make flexible reorganization of business services. In a loosely coupled way to integrate the system between the service provider and service requester, we can format a service-oriented system development platform, which can provide support …

Analyzing The Pedestrian Evacuation Efficiency In Architecture Based On Different Facilities Layout, Zhihong Li, Yanjie Wen, Wangtu Xu, Qi Yue

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Pedestrians escaping from the architecture are restricted by limited time and space. There are so many different exits, channels and bottleneck. Three kinds of facilities layout were designed to be initial schemes. The shortest escaping time was estimated by the different bottlenecks. Then, a safety escaping model based on the facilities layout and dynamic information was proposed, and the escaping time, area density and evacuation efficiency were analyzed by the simulation. The research indicates that by calculating and simulating the model can estimate the evacuation time for different schemes, and the result can provide some advices for facilities layout.

Research On Parametric Modeling Of Radar Electronic Warfare Visual Simulation, Jinliang Guo, Zhang Yang, Xiaoyan Li, Xue Yuan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to improve the versatility of electronic warfare scene simulation and reduce the repeated development, a parametric modeling approach was proposed. Based on the visual simulation development model of Vega Prime, the modular simulation architecture was designed to provide a unified design structure for parametric modeling. The method of parameter extraction and description was researched to standardize the design of simulation model parameters. Parameter constraint rules were researched to associate model parameters, avoid the conflict between parameters, and simplify parameter instantiation. A parametric visual simulation system of electronic warfare was designed and implemented. The parametric modeling process …

A System of Systems (SoS) architecting problem requires creating a selection of systems in order to provide a set of capabilities. SoS architecting finds many applications in military/defense projects. In this paper, we study a multi-objective SoS architecting problem, where the cost of the architecture is minimized while its performance is maximized. The cost of the architecture is the summation of the costs of the systems to be included in the SoS. Similarly, the performance of the architecture is defined as the sum of the performance of the capabilities, where the performance of a capability is the sum of the …

Multiobjective System Of Systems Architecting With Performance Improvement Funds, Hadi Farhangi, Dincer Konur, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A System of Systems architecting problem aims to determine a selection of systems, which are capable of providing a set of desired capabilities. A SoS architect usually has multiple objectives in generating efficient architectures such as minimization of the total cost and maximization the overall performance of the SoS. This study formulates a biobjective SoS architecting problem with these two objectives. Here, we consider that, by allocating funds to the systems, the SoS architect can improve the performance of the capabilities the systems can provide. The resulting architecting problem is a biobjective mixed-integer linear programming model. Specifically, the system selection …

Selecting Attributes, Rules, And Membership Functions For Fuzzy Sos Architecture Evaluation, Louis Pape, Siddhartha Agarwal, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of the FILA-SoS meta-architecture approach to acknowledged systems of systems (SoS) analysis allows a relatively unbiased method for exploring a potential SoS architecture space. This paper delves more deeply into the process of building the lists of desirable fuzzy attributes of a SoS, developing rules for combining attribute values to an overall assessment, and discovering membership function shapes that work well. A wide range of options exist for all the individual elements of SoS assessment. Some recommendations for finding an appropriate combination for the adjustable parameters of fuzzy assessment models through random architecture chromosome testing and iteration are …

Managers and engineers are always looking for options that signify affordable acquisition selections and lessen the cycle time for early acquisition and new technology addition. This research helps in analyzing sequential decisions in an evolving …

Complex Systems Architecting Using Design Primitives, Comparative Analysis And Fuzzy Analytical Feedback, Jason Paul Dauby, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 2010

Complex Systems Architecting Using Design Primitives, Comparative Analysis And Fuzzy Analytical Feedback, Jason Paul Dauby, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modern systems are increasing in complexity. It is advantageous to understand and control this complexity as early in the design lifecycle as possible. The system architecting community must reconcile the inherent ambiguity in a system description with the need for analytical assessments of system attributes so as to increase the likelihood of developmental success. Presently, it is commonplace to decompose systems and subsystems using assumptions of idealized severability and reliance on superposition to estimate composite performance. It is suggested that these assumptions can result in errant oversimplification and represent an opportunity for new systems engineering research. This paper introduces a …

Using Extensible Modeling In Systems Engineering And Architectural Search, Jason Paul Dauby, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 2009

Using Extensible Modeling In Systems Engineering And Architectural Search, Jason Paul Dauby, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The system architecting process is the hierarchical reduction of ambiguity associated with user needs and system design. Design allocation, and subsequent integration, implicitly requires a mechanism by which levels of detail can be added and removed from a decision scenario. This paper addresses the idea of engineering model sharing through the concept of vertical and horizontal extensibility as one mechanism by which hierarchical reduction in ambiguity can be facilitated. Extensible modeling introduces a systems architecting approach to the modeling community by identifying model interfaces and carefully decomposing the model domain. While the actual system hardware is not known at the …
