This paper investigates the comparative design optimizations of a five-phase outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine for in-wheel traction applications. To improve the comprehensive performance of the motor, two kinds of large-scale design optimizations under different operating conditions are performed and compared, including the traditional optimization performed at the rated operating point and the optimization targeting the whole driving cycles. Three driving cycles are taken into account, namely, the urban dynamometer driving schedule (UDDS), the highway fuel economy driving schedule (HWFET), and the combined UDDS/HWFET, representing the city, highway, and combined city/highway driving, respectively. Meanwhile, the computationally efficient finite-element analysis …

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications
This paper discusses the multi-objective optimization of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines with ferrite spoke-type magnets, utilizing 3D finite element models. Three-dimensional finite element analysis is computationally expensive, and furthermore, substantial computation time is expended by optimization algorithms in evaluating low performing designs whose performance is far from the optimum if the search space is not specified correctly. In this regard, this work proposes two new methods for identifying the search space. The search is limited to ranges of input geometric variables where high performing designs are likely to be found. The optimization algorithm utilized is based on surrogate …

Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Converting energy from the currents found within tidal channels, open ocean, rivers, and canals is a promising yet untapped source of renewable energy. In order to permit current energy converters for installation in the environment, the CECs must be shown to non-negatively impact the environment. While developing these model increased utility may be gained if researchers may optimize mechanical power while constraining environmental effects. Surrogate models have garnered interest as optimization tools because they maximize the utility of expensive information by building predictive models in place of computational or experimentally expensive model runs. Marine hydrokinetic current energy converters require large-domain …

Two-On-One Pursuit With A Non-Zero Capture Radius, Patrick J. Wasz
Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, we revisit the "Two Cutters and Fugitive Ship" differential game that was addressed by Isaacs, but move away from point capture. We consider a two-on-one pursuit-evasion differential game with simple motion and pursuers endowed with circular capture sets of radius l > 0. The regions in the state space where only one pursuer effects the capture and the region in the state space where both pursuers cooperatively and isochronously capture the evader are characterized, thus solving the Game of Kind. Concerning the Game of Degree, the algorithm for the synthesis of the optimal state feedback strategies of the …

Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation With Local Optimization, Tianyu Ye, Yiqun Wang, Dongming Yan, Junhai Yong
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Centroidal Voronoi tessellation is a special geometric structure, which has many applications in various fields such as geographical information system, signal processing, mesh generation/optimization, visualization and so on. Due to the highly non-convex nature of the CVT energy function, the existing methods for computing CVT have several drawbacks, which always trap into local minima. We propose generation optimization and stochastic optimization schemes for further reducing the CVT energy. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves both quality and efficiency compared to the recent approaches.

This work enables accelerated fluid recovery in oil and gas reservoirs by automatically controlling fluid height and bottomhole pressure in wells. Several literature studies show significant increase in recovered oil by determining a target bottomhole pressure but rarely consider how to control to that value. This work enables those benefits by maintaining bottomhole pressure or fluid height. Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) determines uncertain well parameters using only common surface measurements. A Model Predictive Controller (MPC) adjusts the stroking speed of a sucker rod pump to maintain fluid height. Pump boundary conditions are simulated with Mathematical Programs with Complementarity Constraints (MPCCs) …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To decrease the interference and improve the performance of a unidirectional circulation-type material handling system on a single loop with a shortcut, the interference and scheduling problem between AGVs are studied. According to the actual situation of material handling system, the interferences of two scheduling rules (random rule and order rule) are analyzed. An optimal scheduling rule under the interference case—exchange order rule is proposed. Different scheduling rules have an influence on the interference between AGVs and then have an important effect on the efficiency of the whole system. Experiment results show that the exchange order (E-Order) rule …
