Increasing The Accessibility Of Bim Training Within The Aec Industry, Xavier Caldera Dec 2019

Increasing The Accessibility Of Bim Training Within The Aec Industry, Xavier Caldera

Construction Management

At the turn of the 21st century, the rise of new technology has helped modernize the AEC industry. Architects, engineers, general contractors, and foremen can build, collaborate, and communicate more efficiently using BIM to help facilitate the building process. The benefits of BIM have been proven through increased coordination, risk mitigation, and cost optimization. However, with the increasing use of BIM, there is a growing education gap between construction workers and BIM technology. Currently, there are three main avenues to learn BIM: in-house company training, attending college, or paying to learn independently online. The foundation for a BIM learning …

Workflow For Modeling Prefabricated Building Assemblies In Autodesk Revit, Matthew Truss Jun 2019

Workflow For Modeling Prefabricated Building Assemblies In Autodesk Revit, Matthew Truss

Construction Management

In 2008, by request of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Research Council† (NRC) put together a committee of experts to advise a plan that would advance the “competitiveness and productivity of U.S. construction industry in the next 20 years.” Two of those recommendations included the widespread deployment of building information modeling (BIM) and greater use of prefabrication, preassembly, modularization, and off-site fabrication techniques. Case studies on the subject overwhelmingly report faster project delivery, improved quality, and safer working conditions. However, current data indicates that labor productivity has still been significantly lacking, perhaps showing that investment …

A Framework For Bim Model-Based Construction Cost Estimation, Michael Clark Jun 2019

A Framework For Bim Model-Based Construction Cost Estimation, Michael Clark

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a framework to conduct a quantity take-off (QTO) and cost estimate within the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Environment. The product of this framework is a model-based cost estimating tool. The framework addresses the cost uncertainty associated with the detailed information defining BIM model element properties. This cost uncertainty is due to the lack of available tools that address detailed QTO and cost estimation using solely a BIM platform. In addition, cost estimators have little experience in leveraging and managing information within semantic-rich BIM models. Unmanaged BIM element parameters are considered a source of uncertainty in a model-based …

Process Of Adopting And Implementing Bim Technology: A Case Study, Andy J. Stone Jun 2019

Process Of Adopting And Implementing Bim Technology: A Case Study, Andy J. Stone

Construction Management

On any relatively large construction project, coordination between stakeholders, project managers, superintendents, subcontractors or any other entity becomes vitally important to the project’s success. Building Information Modeling (BIM) creates a virtual design model of a building, which helps construction managers increase efficiency in terms of cost, schedule and overall quality. By connecting 3-D models to coordination and clash detection software’s, construction managers can solve issues quicker or prevent them from happening in the first place. This case study aims to analyze the implementation and use of BIM technology by Shawmut Design and Construction. This study will also focus on the …

Documentation Of Concrete Slabs Prior To Pours, Peter D. Riley Jun 2019

Documentation Of Concrete Slabs Prior To Pours, Peter D. Riley

Construction Management

Concrete slabs in multi-level commercial building projects contain many components that become no longer visible once concrete has been poured. As building designs advance and continue to locate components in concrete, it is important to document what these slabs contain in order to verify accurate craftsmanship and allow for improved future construction workflows and building modernizations. This paper explores current industry needs for proficient documentation as well as practices to achieve this. A case study was conducted, testing four devices that analyzed feasibility factors for realistic implementation by a contractor such as cost, interoperability, and level of skill required for …

Analysis Of Factors Influencing Return On Investment (Roi) For Building Information Modeling (Bim) Implementation, Tugce Kulaksiz Jan 2019

Analysis Of Factors Influencing Return On Investment (Roi) For Building Information Modeling (Bim) Implementation, Tugce Kulaksiz

Wayne State University Dissertations

A research study was conducted to investigate and understand factors influencing Return on Investment of Building Information Modeling (BIM).

Research data was collected from 182 industry professionals (design firms, contractors and owners) using a survey instrument. The research data were evaluated by examining frequency distributions and running statistical analyses including an analysis of variance with post hoc tests and a multiple linear regression analysis. Furthermore, a simulation study was conducted to infer conclusions about the larger population from which the repeated samples were taken. The research findings revealed that the factors contributing to Return on Investment of BIM implementation were: …
