Natural Hazards And Social Vulnerability Of Place: The Strength-Based Approach Applied To Wollongong, Australia, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Biswajeet Pradhan

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Natural hazards pose significant threats to different communities and various places around the world. Failing to identify and support the most vulnerable communities is a recipe for disaster. Many studies have proposed social vulnerability indices for measuring both the sensitivity of a population to natural hazards and its ability to respond and recover from them. Existing techniques, however, have not accounted for the unique strengths that exist within different communities to help minimize disaster loss. This study proposes a more balanced approach referred to as the strength-based social vulnerability index (SSVI). The proposed SSVI technique, which is built on sound …

There is increasing awareness in Australia of the health impacts of poor air quality. A common public concern raised at a number of "roadshow" events as part of the federally funded Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub (CAUL) project was whether or not the air quality monitoring network around Sydney was sampling air representative of typical suburban settings. In order to investigate this concern, ambient air quality measurements were made on the roof of a two-storey building in the Sydney suburb of Auburn, to simulate a typical suburban balcony site. Measurements were also taken at a busy roadside and these …

The Application Of Evolutionary Computation And Metaheuristics For Solving The Network Design Problems, Mehrdad Amirghasemi, Bo Du, Johan Barthelemy, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Pascal Perez Jan 2019

The Application Of Evolutionary Computation And Metaheuristics For Solving The Network Design Problems, Mehrdad Amirghasemi, Bo Du, Johan Barthelemy, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Network Design Problems (NDPs) can model many real-life problems in a wide range of domains from transportation, supply chain management and logistics, through to the design of telecommunication networks and airline routes. NDPs are generally tackled through employing sophisticated exact methods and (meta-)heuristics. Exact methods mainly include mixed integer programming, column generation, and branch and bound techniques. Metaheuristics, as the second strategy of solving NDPs, can comprise any construction methods, local searches (point-based), evolutionary (population-based) techniques as well as their hybrids. In this abstract, we discuss the challenges and potentials of designing an effective hybrid metaheuristic for solving NDPs by …

Measuring The Perceived Leasing Price Of Empty Container In Shipping System, Hao Hu, Bo Du, Mehrdad Amirghasemi Jan 2019

Measuring The Perceived Leasing Price Of Empty Container In Shipping System, Hao Hu, Bo Du, Mehrdad Amirghasemi

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The container shipping activity has increased significantly with the growth of world economy and global trade. However, due to the imbalance of global trade, there is always an imbalance between import and export containers, which results in that some ports have a surplus of empty containers while the others have a deficit. At a surplus port, storage cost and repositioning cost for shipping companies increase inevitably; while at a deficit port, shipping companies have to lease or purchase empty containers to meet customers’ demand. Empty container repositioning is one of the most effective ways to solve such imbalance problem, however …

Cooperative positioning (CP) utilises information sharing among multiple nodes to enable positioning in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments. This paper reports the performance of a CP system for pedestrians using Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology in GNSS-denied environments. This data set was collected as part of a benchmarking measurement campaign carried out at the Ohio State University in October 2017. Pedestrians were equipped with a variety of sensors, including two different UWB systems, on a specially designed helmet serving as a mobile multi-sensor platform for CP. Different users were walking in stop-and-go mode along trajectories with predefined checkpoints and under …

Estimating Travellers’ Trip Purposes Using Public Transport Data And Land Use Information, Bo Du Jan 2019

Estimating Travellers’ Trip Purposes Using Public Transport Data And Land Use Information, Bo Du

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

In public transport system, the equipped automated fare collection (AFC) system records travellers’ spatial and temporal information and generates a mass of data daily with more than ever attraction of interest and attention from both academics and practitioners. Advances in data availability and data mining techniques provide great opportunity to investigate various researches in an efficient and effective manner. A comprehensive literature review on the application of public transport smart card data before 2011 can be referred to [1]. As some relevant studies in recent years, [2] proposed a data fusion method to infer passengers’ behavioral attributes of the trips …

Computer Vision And Iot-Based Sensors In Flood Monitoring And Mapping: A Systematic Review, Bilal Arshad, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Johan Barthelemy, Biswajeet Pradhan, Nicolas R. Verstaevel, Pascal Perez Jan 2019

Computer Vision And Iot-Based Sensors In Flood Monitoring And Mapping: A Systematic Review, Bilal Arshad, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Johan Barthelemy, Biswajeet Pradhan, Nicolas R. Verstaevel, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Floods are amongst the most common and devastating of all natural hazards. The alarming number of flood-related deaths and financial losses suffered annually across the world call for improved response to flood risks. Interestingly, the last decade has presented great opportunities with a series of scholarly activities exploring how camera images and wireless sensor data from Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks can improve flood management. This paper presents a systematic review of the literature regarding IoT-based sensors and computer vision applications in flood monitoring and mapping. The paper contributes by highlighting the main computer vision techniques and IoT sensor approaches utilised in …

Crowdsourced Social Media Data For Disaster Management: Lessons From The Petajakarta.Org Project, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Rodney J. Clarke, Hugh I. Forehead, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The application of crowdsourced social media data in flood mapping and other disaster management initiatives is a burgeoning field of research, but not one that is without challenges. In identifying these challenges and in making appropriate recommendations for future direction, it is vital that we learn from the past by taking a constructively critical appraisal of highly-praised projects in this field, which through real-world implementations have pioneered the use of crowdsourced geospatial data in modern disaster management. These real-world applications represent natural experiments, each with myriads of lessons that cannot be easily gained from computer-confined simulations. This paper reports on …

Artificial Intelligence In Disaster Risk Communication: A Systematic Literature Review, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Juan C. Castilla Rho, Rodney J. Clarke

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Effective communication of disaster risks is crucial to provoking appropriate responses from citizens and emergency operators. With recent advancement in Artificial Intelligence (AI), several researchers have begun exploring machine learning techniques in improving disaster risk communication. This paper adopts a systematic literature approach to report on the various research activities involving the application of AI in disaster risk communication. The study found that research activities focus on two broad areas: (1) prediction and monitoring for early warning, and (2) information extraction and classification for situational awareness. These broad areas are discussed, including background information to help establish future applications of …
