Field And Laboratory Investigations On The Use Of Fly Ash And Li-Based Admixtures To Prevent Asr In Concrete, Benoit Fournier, A. Bilodeau, N. Bouzoubaa, P-C. Nkinamubanzi

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Since the early 1990’s, CANMET (Department of Natural Resources Canada) is carrying out a comparative field and laboratory research program to investigate the efficacy of laboratory test procedures for properly predicting the long-term efficacy of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in controlling expansion due to alkali-silica reaction (ASR). Binary and ternary concrete systems, i.e. fly ash (Class F), lithium-based admixtures, fly ash / Li-based admixtures, were selected with a variety of alkali-silica reactive aggregates. The expansive behaviour of the various combinations listed above was investigated in the laboratory using concrete prisms stored under accelerated test conditions (38oC and 100% RH). Exposure …

Emerging Rapid Aggregate And Concrete Test Methods For Formulating Asr-Resistant Concrete, Anol Mukhopadhyay, Kai-Wei Liu Nov 2019

Emerging Rapid Aggregate And Concrete Test Methods For Formulating Asr-Resistant Concrete, Anol Mukhopadhyay, Kai-Wei Liu

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

The main objective of this study was to develop rapid aggregate and concrete test methods and a combined innovative approach for formulating performance based ASR resistant concrete mixes. An innovative step by step approach has been developed to formulate ASR resistant concrete mixes based on four recommended steps. In step 1, determination of aggregate ASR composite activation energy (CAE) and threshold alkalinity (THA) by using a rapid aggregate chemical test called volumetric change measuring device (VCMD) is performed. The lower the CAE the higher the reactivity is. Based on the measured CAE and THA, mix design formulation is conducted in …

Climate Resilient Concrete Structures In Marine Environment Of Bangladesh, Sudarshan Srinivasan, Ian Gibb Nov 2019

Climate Resilient Concrete Structures In Marine Environment Of Bangladesh, Sudarshan Srinivasan, Ian Gibb

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Bangladesh has a vast coastal infrastructure seriously affected by climate change and associated extreme environmental conditions. The rural construction sector in Bangladesh will be undergoing rapid growth in the next 10 years through rural infrastructure development programmes funded by the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank. The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED in Bangladesh), owns the rural concrete infrastructure, maintains around 380, 000 linear metres of concrete bridges or culverts in the rural coastal areas and are planning to build more than 200,000 linear metres during the next ten years. In order to design and construct durable concrete structures …
