Metallic components can gain defects such as dents, cracks, wear, heat checks, deformation, etc., that need to be repaired before reinserting into service for extending the lifespan of these parts. In this study, a hybrid process was developed to integrate reverse engineering, pre-repair processing, additive manufacturing, and material testing for the purpose of part remanufacturing. Worn components with varied defects were scanned using a 3D scanner to recreate the three-dimensional models. Pre-repair processing methods which include pre-repair machining and heat-treatment were introduced. Strategies for pre-repair machining of defects including surface impact damage, surface superficial damage and cracking were presented. Pre-repair …

Generation Of Nondiffracting Vector Beams With Ring-Shaped Plasmonic Metasurfaces, Yuchao Zhang, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nondiffracting Bessel, Mathieu, and Weber vector beams are generated by using ring-shaped plasmonic geometric metasurfaces. The nondiffracting vector beam is produced by the superposition of two off-axis right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized nondiffracting scalar beams described by the Whittaker integral, which are simultaneously generated by a single metasurface with the ring-shaped phase profile. The polarization states of the generated nondiffracting vector beams are analyzed by the Stokes parameters and the orbital angular momentum states are measured by the beam interference. In addition, the selfhealing properties of nondiffracting vector beams are further demonstrated, showing that not only the beam profiles but …

Analysis Of Geometric Accuracy And Thickness Reduction In Multistage Incremental Sheet Forming Using Digital Image Correlation, Mercedes M. Gonzalez, Nathan A. Lutes, Joseph D. Fischer, Mitchell R. Woodside, Douglas A. Bristow, Robert G. Landers

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) is a freeform manufacturing method whereby a 3D geometry is created by progressively deforming a metal sheet with a single point tool following a defined trajectory. The thickness distribution of a formed part is a major consideration of the process and is believed to be improved by forming the geometry in multiple stages. This paper describes a series of experiments in which truncated cone geometries were formed using two multistage methods and compared to the same geometry formed using the traditional single stage method. The geometric accuracy and thickness distributions, including 3D thickness distribution plots, of …

This paper develops an integral value iteration (VI) method to efficiently find online the Nash equilibrium solution of two-player non-zero-sum (NZS) differential games for linear systems with partially unknown dynamics. To guarantee the closed-loop stability about the Nash equilibrium, the explicit upper bound for the discounted factor is given. To show the efficacy of the presented online model-free solution, the integral VI method is compared with the model-based off-line policy iteration method. Moreover, the theoretical analysis of the integral VI algorithm in terms of three aspects, i.e., positive definiteness properties of the updated cost functions, the stability of the closed-loop …

Novel And Efficient Parasitic Decoupling Network For Closely Coupled Antennas, Min Li, Lijun Jiang, Kwan Lawrence Yeung

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel and efficient parasitic decoupling network (PDN) is proposed for closely coupled antennas in this paper, which provides a new perspective and approach to design DNs based on the parasitic decoupling concept. The PDN is composed of sections of transmission lines (TLs) and reactive components, allowing additional power-traveling paths. With the TL lengths and reactive component reactance being precisely determined, the traveling power from one antenna to another could cancel out the undesired power wave induced by mutual coupling, resulting in the high port isolation. The decoupling theory is rigorously derived with the design procedure of the PDN systematically …

Source Reconstruction Method Based On Machine Learning Algorithms, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new source reconstruction method (SRM) based on deep learning. The conventional SRM usually requires oversampled measurements data to ensure higher accuracy. Thus, conventional SRM numerical system is usually highly singular. A deep convolutional neural network (ConvNet) is proposed to reconstruct the equivalent sources of the target to overcome difficulty. The deep ConvNet allows us to employ less data samples. Besides, the ill-conditioned numerical system can be effectively avoided. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method. Its performance is also compared with the traditional neural network and interpolation method. Moreover, …

Analysis Of The Topological Photonic Crystals Using Finite-Difference Supercell Approach, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Zhihao Lan, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Topological photonic systems have been explored extensively due to the robust electromagnetic states they support. In this work, we propose a finite-difference supercell approach to analyze the topological property of photonic crystal (PC) structures. Meanwhile, the pseudospin polarized edge states at the interface of two PC structures with different topologies are studied. The direction of the energy flow is found to be determined by the helicity of the pseudospin polarization.

4-nitrophenol is one of the phenolic compounds found in industrial wastes that needs to be removed from treated wastewater. Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) has been introduced as a developing technology for advanced wastewater and water treatment. This emerging technology of treatment can be intensified by strategically adding nanoparticles to organic membrane phase (O). To facilitate the industrial implementation of ELM with nanoparticles, we used magnetic iron nanoparticles added to the organic phase (O) in order to recover them by a magnet for reuse. This also assists in de-emulsification step. The results show that with the use of 1% (W/W) of …

Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations were used to calculate the positron stopping profiles in tungsten positron moderator foils. Stopping profiles were numerically integrated with efficiency kernels derived from Green's function solutions of the 3D diffusion equation to determine the moderation efficiency in both the backscattering and transmission geometries. Stopping profiles and efficiencies were calculated for positron energies from 10 keV to 10 MeV and incident angles from 0° to 75°. The resulting efficiencies agreed with other calculated and measured values in the literature, especially when similar values of the positron diffusion length and surface emission branching ratio were used. Large …

Fast Yield Estimation Of Multi-Band Patch Antennas By Pc-Kriging, Xiaosong Du, Leifur Leifsson, Slawomir Koziel May 2019

Fast Yield Estimation Of Multi-Band Patch Antennas By Pc-Kriging, Xiaosong Du, Leifur Leifsson, Slawomir Koziel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The PC-Kriging metamodeling method is proposed for yield estimation of multi-band patch antennas. PC-Kriging is a combination of polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) and Kriging metamodeling, where PCE is used as a trend function for the Kriging interpolation metamodel. The method is demonstrated on the Ishigami analytical function and a dual-band patch antenna. The PC-Kriging is shown to reach the prescribed accuracy limit with significantly fewer training points than both PCE and Kriging. This translates into considerable computational savings of yield estimation over alternative metamodel-based procedures and direct EM-driven Monte Carlo simulation. The saving are obtained without compromising evaluation reliability.

A 2d/Q-2d Subdomain Finite Element Method For Irregular Power/Ground Plate-Pair Analysis With Waveport Excitation, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Yao Jiang Zhang, Shuai Xu, Hakan Bagci

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The field distribution of a power/ground plane can be fully characterized by TMzmn modes, where the electric fields have both azimuthal and longitudinal components and the magnetic fields have only the azimuthal component. Thus, if the magnetic fields are defined to be the unknowns in the finite element method (FEM) used for the analysis of the power/ground plane structure, the analysis becomes a quasi-two dimensional (Q-2D) problem. Since the high-order modes are evanescent, they are tightly confined to the near region of the vias guarded by anti-pads; while in the regions sufficiently far from the anti-pads, only the fundamental mode …

The Decoupling Methods For Increasing The Isolation Between Two Antennas, Min Li, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presented the parasitic structure decoupling method and other related approaches to increase the isolation between two closely coupled antennas. The design parameters of the resultant decoupling structures based on the proposed methods can be precisely derived instead of fitted to achieve high antenna isolations. A two-element monopole array is employed as a benchmark to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. The simulation results show that good impedance matching and high port isolation could be achieved simultaneously based on the proposed methods.

Revisiting The Butler-Mokrys Model For The Vapor-Extraction Process, Vijitha Mohan, Partho Neogi, Baojun Bai

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamics of a process in which a solvent in the form of a vapor or gas is introduced in a heavy-oil reservoir is considered. The process is called the solvent vapor-extraction process (VAPEX). When the vapor dissolves in the oil, it reduces its viscosity, allowing oil to flow under gravity and be collected at the bottom producer well. The conservation-of-species equation is analyzed to obtain a more-appropriate equation that differentiates between the velocity within the oil and the velocity at the interface, which can be solved to obtain a concentration profile of the solvent in oil. We diverge from …
