Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Thin-Film Evaporation: The Effect Of Graphene-Coated Silicon On Water Evaporation Behavior, Rui Zhou Dec 2019

Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Thin-Film Evaporation: The Effect Of Graphene-Coated Silicon On Water Evaporation Behavior, Rui Zhou

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Conventional single-phase air or liquid cooling methods are insufficient to dissipate the high heat flux of next-generation electronic systems. Thin-film evaporation is one of the most promising solutions, because it takes advantage of the large amount of latent heat in the phase change process. It is important to understand the relationship between interfacial thermal resistance, surface wettability, and thin-film evaporation behavior. In this study, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are used to study mass and heat transfer in thin-film evaporation of water on a silicon substrate, and equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the surface wettability by measuring contact …

Ph-Sensitive Oxygen Release Microspheres To Enhance Cell Survival In Ischemic Condition, Zhongting Liu Dec 2019

Ph-Sensitive Oxygen Release Microspheres To Enhance Cell Survival In Ischemic Condition, Zhongting Liu

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Ischemic diseases such as myocardial infarction, stroke and limb ischemia are severe cardiovascular diseases with high rate of death and millions of people suffered from these diseases. Under ischemic environment, cells die due to deficient supply of nutrient and oxygen. To regenerate ischemic tissues, stem cell therapy is a promising approach because stem cells can differentiate into cells necessary for the regeneration. However, stem cell therapy has limitations. For example, few cells can survive under harsh ischemic environment. To enhance stem cells survival, implantation of oxygen release microspheres to sustained supply cells with oxygen represents an effective strategy. Previously, our …

Expanding The Palette: Synthesizing Microencapsulated Organic Phase Change Materials In Metallic Matrices For Transient Thermal Applications, Melissa Kate Mccann Dec 2019

Expanding The Palette: Synthesizing Microencapsulated Organic Phase Change Materials In Metallic Matrices For Transient Thermal Applications, Melissa Kate Mccann

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

As the demand for smaller and faster electronics increases, it becomes increasingly challenging to effectively manage the generated heat without hindering device performance in applications whose thermal profiles are dominated by pulsed thermal loads. Heat propagation in a system can be characterized by steady or transient state heat transfer. In steady state, the temperature at any particular point remains constant after thermal equilibrium is reached. In a transient state, the temperature within a system varies over time. The changing parameters and time dependency associated with a transient regime make heat transfer calculations far more complex than in a steady state. …

Self-Assembly Of Conducting Polymer Nano- And Microstructures For Energy Storage, Luciano Matteo Santino Aug 2019

Self-Assembly Of Conducting Polymer Nano- And Microstructures For Energy Storage, Luciano Matteo Santino

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plastics are materials composed of many long chains of molecules with repeating subunits; strong interactions between neighboring molecules lead to the material used throughout the world. Plastics are commonly thought to be insulating, in stark contrast to the conductivity of metals. However, certain polymer structures were discovered to exhibit semiconducting properties, the subject of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000. Conducting polymers have a unique molecular structure with an electronically conjugated backbone, allowing electrons to freely travel both across the chain and in between chains. This work focuses on controlling the kinetics of the reaction between the vapors of …

Electronic Transport Behavior Of Adatom- And Nanoparticle-Decorated Graphene, Jamie Anne Elias May 2019

Electronic Transport Behavior Of Adatom- And Nanoparticle-Decorated Graphene, Jamie Anne Elias

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To induce a non-negligible spin-orbit coupling in monolayer graphene, for the purposes of realizing the Kane-Mele Hamiltonian, transition metal adatoms have been deposited in dilute amounts by thermal evaporation in situ while holding the device temperature near 4K. Electronic transport studies including measurements such as gate voltage dependent conductivity and mobility, weak localization, high field magnetoresistance (Shubnikov de Haas oscillations), quantum Hall, and nonlocal voltage were performed at low temperature before and after sequential evaporations. Studies of tungsten adatoms are consistent with literature regarding other metal adatoms on graphene but were unsuccessful in producing a spin-orbit signature, at least partially …

Defect Chemistry And Ion Intercalation During The Growth And Solid-State Transformation Of Metal Halide Nanocrystals, Bo Yin

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Abstract of the Dissertation

Defect Chemistry and Ion Intercalation During the Growth and Solid-State Transformation of Metal Halide Nanocrystals

Semiconductor metal halides as light-sensitive materials have applications in multiple areas, such as photographic film, antibacterial agents and photocatalysts. One focus of this dissertation is to achieve novel morphologies of ternary silver bromoiodide (AgBr1-xIx, 0

For the silver halide system, we demonstrate that the anion composition of AgBr1-xIx nanocrystals determines their shape through the introduction of twin defects as the nanocrystals are made more iodide-rich. AgBr1-xIx nanocrystals grow as single-phase, solid solutions with the rock salt crystal structure for anions compositions …

Fracture Toughness Improvement Of Ceramics By Grain Size Control And Ductile Phase Reinforcement, Kesong Wang May 2019

Fracture Toughness Improvement Of Ceramics By Grain Size Control And Ductile Phase Reinforcement, Kesong Wang

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study used grain size control and ductile phase reinforcement to improve fracture toughness of ceramics. Alpha alumina particles of 100 nm, 0.5-1 micrometers, and 10 micrometers were coated with 1-5 nm nickel by electroless nickel plating (ENP). The coated powders were consolidated at 1200℃-1500℃ by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The sintered samples were annealed at 1100 oC for 1.5 hours and 10 hours to determine the effect of post sintering annealing on hardness and fracture toughness. Density of the samples were measured by the standard Archimedes method using a 5 mL pycnometer. Hardness values were determined by Vickers …

Development Of A Multi-Probe Kelvin Scanner Device For Industrially-Relevant Characterization Of Surface-Activated Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites, Kirby Simon May 2019

Development Of A Multi-Probe Kelvin Scanner Device For Industrially-Relevant Characterization Of Surface-Activated Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites, Kirby Simon

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) composites are becoming increasingly attractive materials in manufacturing due to their lightweight nature, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance. Surface activation of these materials is usually required during processing to increase the bond strength of assemblies (aerospace and automotive industries) or improve adhesion with implants (biomedical industry). Industrially-relevant, nondestructive quality control methods for assessing the activation state of these materials do not currently exist, however. Applying principles discovered through the use of scanning probe microscopy, a multiple-probe Kelvin scanning (MPKS) device has been developed that can assess the uniformity of the activation state of plasma-treated CFRTP …

A New Pedot Synthesis Method And Its Application In Energy Storage, Haozhe Chen

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Conducting polymer is a common electrode material in supercapacitors, people usually create nano-structure on electrode surface to enhance the performance of supercapacitors. Synthetic nanostructured polymers have been implemented in many ways, most of them are template-based synthesis, which is time consuming and expensive, people are pursuing an easier way to synthesize nanostructured conducting polymers. Combining ferric chloride solution hydrolysis and EDOT polymerization to get PEDOT nano fiber in one step has been achieved. We develop a new method to synthesis PEDOT nano fiber from solid-state iron in one step. Our process takes place in a single step inside a sealed …
